    1. That Stuv is an unconventional looking stove… has a nice small footprint.
As for the study… done in Athens… population density 17,000 per square kilometer.
Population density in my neighbourhood… about 100 per square kilometer.
I think I can live with the relative risk.

      1. My closest neighbors are a km away. I burn wood and have a ground source heat pump. Both work well. Some will gripe at the geothermal, but until it gets to minus 30 it is not an issue. Even then, it just works hard. But it’s nice to have a wood burning stove. Nice to look at and the extra heat is nice too. Really happy I never opted for an outside wood burning furnace. Where I live, those that have them typically burn 10 plus cords a winter. That’s a lot of wood…

  1. The study is nothing but artful junk science. The toxicity reference values (TRVs) used to estimate PAH inhalation carcinogenic risk are junk. Out largest source of intake of carcinogenic PAHs is our diet, has been for centuries. Anyone believing this nonsense should seriously consider limiting their intake of air for the benefit of everyone else.

  2. I had heard of these chemicals somewhere and then I remembered, from our US government:
“Studies have shown that exposure to HCAs and PAHs can cause cancer in animal models (10). In many experiments, rodents fed a diet supplemented with HCAs developed tumors of the breast, colon, liver, skin, lung, prostate, and other organs (11–16). Rodents fed PAHs also developed cancers, including leukemia and tumors of the gastrointestinal tract and lungs (17). However, the doses of HCAs and PAHs used in these studies were very high—equivalent to thousands of times the doses that a person would consume in a normal diet”. Here is the page:

Money question: what is the blood serum level of these chemicals in people with urban exposure?

  3. But the pelletized Canadian forests going up the stacks in GB power generators don’t count.

    Right?

  4. We own a poorly insulated, poorly built late 70’s house. From what I’ve seen in the renos I’ve done I’m sure there are areas where the insulation has gaps in it. R12 in the walls. Baseboard electric heat. Hydro goes from around $90 per month warm season, to up to $250 per month in the winter. Currently -7 here in Comox. Stove makes the difference. Since purchase I have upgraded the roof insulation from R12 to R32. Replaced the aluminum windows vinyl thermal panes. There is such a cozy feeling with wood warmth. Brother up island installed a heat pump. He loves it and had a generator and gas to run it during outages. 68yr old and have enjoyed wood head almost all my life. We have been in this house since 2001.

  5. Wood is good.
Only wood works when the power is out.
Funny how the power goes out when conditions are cold and miserable..
    Wood smoke cause cancer?
    Meh.
Breathing causes cancer of the lungs.
All those in terror of minor irritants in the air, need to make use of modern industries wonder cure..
A plastic bag duct tapped about the neck.
Second hand smoke…almost as sciency as CAGW.
    Or The Dread Covid Theatre.

  6. I burn 8+ cords every year.
Already working on next years supply.

Remember: saliva causes stomach cancer – only if swallowed in small quantities over a long period of time….

  7. Anyone ever notice that cancer rates have been increasing lockstep with government expansion? If we decrease government to about 1 weasel for every million people we could eliminate cancer. Just like Brandon promised.

  8. I only burn pressure treated, and creosoted rail road ties. Sometimes kitchen garbage.

    So, I’m in the clear.
