Canadian military leaders saw the pandemic as a unique opportunity to test out propaganda techniques on an unsuspecting public, a newly released Canadian Forces report concludes.
The federal government never asked for the so-called information operations campaign, nor did cabinet authorize the initiative developed during the COVID-19 pandemic by the Canadian Joint Operations Command, then headed by Lt.-Gen. Mike Rouleau.
But military commanders believed they didn’t need to get approval from higher authorities to develop and proceed with their plan, retired Maj.-Gen. Daniel Gosselin, who was brought in to investigate the scheme, concluded in his report.

The plan devised by the Canadian Joint Operations Command, also known as CJOC, relied on propaganda techniques similar to those employed during the Afghanistan war. The campaign called for “shaping” and “exploiting” information. CJOC claimed the information operations scheme was needed to head off civil disobedience by Canadians during the coronavirus pandemic and to bolster government messages about the pandemic.
A separate initiative, not linked to the CJOC plan, but overseen by Canadian Forces intelligence officers, culled information from public social media accounts in Ontario. Data was also compiled on peaceful Black Lives Matter gatherings and BLM leaders. Senior military officers claimed that information was needed to ensure the success of Operation Laser, the Canadian Forces mission to help out in long-term care homes hit by COVID-19 and to aid in the distribution of vaccines in some northern communities.

I sent Kate 3 pictures I took (which she never got) showing a fighter jet making a very low dry strafing run right over my house. I doubt if it was 500ft high.
Same jet circled near my neighbors farm and he was pissed that it was so low it was disturbing his live stock.
The pilot did not know I had my point and shoot camera to record it.

Disinformation was never the intent of the military. Quite the contrary, it was meant to allay fears and keep calm in the event of a crisis. Why some SDA commenters wish to discredit our besieged military is beyond me and why they place belief in the media is especially galling considering past comments to the contrary.

Agreed about Pugliese. He’s made a career out of being the only “journalist” covering Canadian military matters and has gotten extremely lazy and desperate to remain relevant. He is a muckraker who has never done anything of worth re:the military.
That being said I don’t think people here are against the Military, per se, rather against the government using the capabilities of the military (and other organizations) against the civilian populace. If you use Information Operations units on an operation, they are going to conduct information operations using the techniques and tools they have learned to use, appropriate or not. Since the end of operations in Afghanistan IO units have been looking for a place to happen, so to speak and when they were deployed to Trenton, for example when that quarantine operation was running there last year, they did some questionable things and were rightly (lightly) reprimanded for it. What else are they or others up to? Who knows? People have lost faith in the elected government and many of the institutions and they’re afraid of what come next. Australia or Sweden? The Australian military and police seem to have no problem with violently suppressing their citizens and what will happen here is an open question.
I was in the military and have many friends who still are. You shouldn’t kid yourself about where their loyalties lie and to whom they swear an oath.
