Industry collapse

While it is undeniably true that Covid subsidies have incentivized the withdrawal of employees from the workplace, who is going to seek a long term career in an industry such as hospitality that could be shut down repeatedly at the drop of a hat? Offering higher wages will do little to encourage people to stay in a career with prospects that are this dim. Furthermore, what investor is going to stake capital in this same industry that is rapidly filling up with stranded assets?

In June, 60 per cent of B.C. hospitality workers who were no longer working in the industry had voluntarily left their positions.

“Canadian businesses unable to find enough workers may be forced to operate at a reduced capacity, missing out on the opportunity to fully recover from long months of lockdowns or curtailed operations,” the economist stated.

  1. Some on SDA predicted that, after destroying the oil and forestry industries, the government will be going after agriculture. One way of doing that is by wiping out a large segment of the market for farm produce. There’s no points in growing crops for the restaurant business if those establishments close down for lack of staff or clientele.

No doubt, it’s all part of The Great Reset.

    1. BA ; I believe you are correct. The best way to destroy a Country is first kill the energy sector, then service and manufacturing jobs and lastly the food chain. This is exactly what is happening right now and unfortunately too many Canadians are to stupid or selfish or ignorant see this. The next 24-36 months are not going to be much fun for a lot of people. Be safe…… Steve O

      1. If you need physical hard goods, now would be a time to start stocking up.
Whether they be used or new.
A huge shortage is coming for just about everything including food.
And I doubt those goods will be restocked anytime soon.
People will scour garage sales and more to find what they need , if it still is available.
For some the time for prepping may have passed but it never is too late to start.

    2. +++++/\ BA

I think you nailed Plank # 3 in this Utter SCAM OF a benign virus. The complete destruction of Western Hemisphere Capitalism.. That which they attempted via Climate Policy…through the IPCC….Small business being the backbone of our Western economies….

  2. Most pubs and restaurants in BC still close early because there’s no staff. When the vaccine passports come in it’ll be the final blow. All they had to do was resist this crap.

    1. The pub/restaurant industry DEMANDED the passports, let that sink in for a minute.

Or at least the head of the association did, no doubt he didn’t ask the membership.

Yes, many places are shutting down early, they are cutting their own throats, and now, they demand government funding for security guards, because of the passport rules they demanded.

Restaurants are the authors of their own demise! LET THEM FAIL!

      1. “Or at least the head of the association did, no doubt he didn’t ask the membership.”

-symptom of modernity: Be forced to join some “association” whose role it is to ostensibly defend your interests, only to find out its real role is to promote lefty ideology and/or corruption.

          1. “AKA being a “citizen”.”
…or a union member, or a franchisee…all various forms of “subject”.

      2. The individual restaurants didn’t beg for the passports and the rest it was the provincial associations that lobbied for it. I used to own a gas bar/ convenience store and technically belonged to the related association, I would get a pamphlet once a year telling me how great a job they were doing on my behalf. Not once was my opinion asked for, told when and where the meetings were held, or allowed to vote on the leadership. Does that sound that a group that’s dedicated to representing the industry?

      3. Precisely. And when the passport comes into effect, there will be no takeout or drive-thru for this family. Be careful what you wish for idiots.

    2. If all small business were to ignore the shut downs … there are not enough police to go around and do anything much about it. When they close you, go open the next morning again and again … It’s your right to work and earn a living, buy food, raise your kids.

Government has over stepped the bounds and they MUST be pushed back or we will become slaves. I kid you not. We are on a trajectory similar to other countries that were failing due to socialist policies and eventually and always … it gets uglier with the passing of time. Until it’s a living hell .. like Cuba, NKorea,Venezuela. etc.

  3. Canada is now in the inhospitality business.
Most of the people on the so-called right are willing to vote for vax passports.

That would be the vast herd of indoctrinated vacuous dipshits listening to the constant BS offered up by the CBC – McLeans – Tor Star. Aficionado’s thereof who have bought the fear Porn lock stock n barrel….much like yourself apparently…brain dead and unable to conceive of Govt malfeance.

Go get your triple jab…lmao ..!!

    5. Then you don’t need to be here.

If you are convinced that your course of action was the correct one, then you don’t need to be here.

Trying to convince everyone that you don’t care? It looks like you are trying to convince yourself.

  4. Just spent a week in the Saguenay / Tadoussac area. “Nous Embauchons” (we are hiring) signs were everywhere. Almost as numerous as the Fermez (closed) signs.

For the Inns/Hotels/B & Bs that managed to stay open, many of the amenities are either not available or on reduced hours. At the Tadoussac Hotel, my wife asked the lady at the desk, why? So she told us.

The entire college/university crowd that normally staffs the restaurant, cuts lawns, failed to show up for the last 2 summers. However, Just prior to the Wuhan flu nonsense the hotel management had undertaken a pilot project ((you know damned well who subsidizes it) with the federal and provincial governments to provide employment to Young Indians from the reserves in Northern Quebec.

Translating from the Lady’s French: “Imagine this. We were offering free lodging, a decent wage, and all we had was unemployed Indians from up north. They had zero work experience and had absolutely no idea about how to work with the public in service industries. We had to train them from the bottom up. Wash your hands, smile, say please and thank you. But we had no choice. The young whites abandoned us! The first summer was tough, but now things are working out okay.”

  5. “…who is going to seek a long term career in an industry such as hospitality that could be shut down repeatedly at the drop of a hat?”

The possibility of future COVID-related lockdowns isn’t at all the reason why workers are leaving behind or turning down “long term careers” in hospitality. It’s because so many of the current vacancies in that sector — hotel cleaning staff, line cooks, etc. — either present no “long term career” paths at all, or offer some combination of low wages, limited benefits, insecure employment, long hours, late hours, unpredictable hours, and/or physically gruelling work.

For the working class, a labour shortage isn’t necessarily a bad thing: nytimes.com/2021/09/04/opinion/labor-shortage-biden-covid.html

    1. Ahh, the modern left, makes up a narrative in their little stateist mind, and then presents it as Truth.
Funny, other sectors that have the same working conditions, but are not locked down are not suffering anywhere near as badly.

      1. “Funny, other sectors that have the same working conditions, but are not locked down are not suffering anywhere near as badly.“

        Name one.

        1. Landscaping, construction, warehousing, HVAC maintenance, security, call center work, waste management, retail, house cleaning, tobacco picking, solar farm installation, mushroom picking,…the list goes on.
          Idiot.

          1. Um, almost all of those jobs you listed are also experiencing labour shortages: construction workers, call centre workers, waste collectors, security guards, retail workers, farm pickers. Go ahead, look it up; I’ll wait.

Also, the average salary in Canada is around $60K for HVAC techs, $40K for solar panel installers, $37K for landscapers, $35K for constructor labourers, etc., versus $31K for hotel housekeepers, $29K for line cooks, and $23K for fast food workers.

So, all in all, thanks for making my point for me.

          2. The thing is, Ted, I don’t have to look up something in the NYT or TorStar, I can see with my own two eyes what is going on, where the “help wanted” signs are, and where they are not.
Solar farm installation is a piece-work job, averaging little over minimum wage, so right there, I know you again are just making things up.
You have also utterly failed to take into account part-time vs full-time hours, and to suggest that the labor shortage in any of those positions is comparable to that in hospitality work is ludicrous.

          3. Steakman – as you know, annual salaries for welding QC/QA inspectors start around $45K, can go upwards of $80K. Likewise, NDE/NDT inspectors and techs are in the $60-70K range. Both far cries from low-wage, dead-end service and hospitality jobs.

    2. So that’s why teen-agers and college students work these jobs! Because there is no future in them.

Perhaps you should discuss this with those who seek seasonal employment to pay for schooling or immigrants whose credentials and/or skills set might lead them to this industry.

  6. This is just another reason to import 3rd worlders. God love them, but they’re getting a big lie from the Immigration Recruitment Agents. “Come to Canada. Lots of jobs!” I guess their kids will benefit and who the fuck wants to live in Sierra Leone?
I just wonder where these Canadians expect to work next?
Lots of things are getting weirder everyday.

    1. This is a turning point in history. What has been for past 100 years is over. People have changed their attitudes in many ways. They have become sensitive to silliest shit you can think of, but are taken very seriously by the caring left.

To sum-up the white free, capitalist, western world is under attack by not only the other powers, but much of the third world and worst of all , by more than half of it’s own citizens. The future is about to become very different and there isn’t any turning back. Too many minds are ‘made-up’ and ‘well-washed’.

  7. Wow. Take the hint, capitalist blood suckers and oppressed wage slaves, embrace the underground economy. Since when did rules and regulations mean anything to anyone in this time of open borders, undocumented everything, and vote early and often? Get aboard the gravy train; do not be a chump.
