I grew up in a city that in its short history (barely over 150 years) had its name changed three times.(2,3) Founded in 1869 around a steel plant and several coal mines built by the Welsh industrialist John Hughes, the settlement was originally called Hughesovka (or Yuzovka). When the Bolsheviks came to power in the 1917 Revolution, the new government of the working class, the Soviets, set out to purge the country of ideologically impure influences in the name of the proletariat and the worldwide struggle of the suppressed masses. Cities and geographical landmarks were renamed,(4) statues were torn down, books were burned, and many millions were jailed and murdered.(5) In due course, the commissars got to Yuzovka, and the city was stripped of the name of its founder, a representative of the hostile class of oppressors and a Westerner. In modern terms, Hughes was canceled. For a few months, the city was called Trotsk (after Leon Trotsky), until Trotsky lost in the power struggle inside the party and was himself canceled (see Figure 1). In 1924 the city became the namesake of the new supreme leader of the Communist Party (Stalin), and a few years later renamed to Stalino. My mother’s school certificates have Stalino on them. Following Stalin’s death in 1953, the Communist party underwent some reckoning and admitted that several decades of terror and many millions of murdered citizens were somewhat excessive. Stalin was canceled: his body was removed from the Mausoleum at Red Square (where it had been displayed next to Lenin’s); textbooks and encyclopedias were rewritten once again; and the cities, institutions, and landmarks bearing his name were promptly renamed. Stalino became Donetsk, after the river Severskii Donets.[…]
The Cold War is a distant memory and the country shown on my birth certificate and school and university diplomas, the USSR, is no longer on the map. But I find myself experiencing its legacy some thousands of miles to the west, as if I am living in an Orwellian twilight zone. I witness ever-increasing attempts to subject science and education to ideological control and censorship. Just as in Soviet times, the censorship is being justified by the greater good. Whereas in 1950, the greater good was advancing the World Revolution (in the USSR; in the USA the greater good meant fighting Communism), in 2021 the greater good is “Social Justice” (the capitalization is important: “Social Justice” is a specific ideology, with goals that have little in common with what lower-case “social justice” means in plain English).(10−12) As in the USSR, the censorship is enthusiastically imposed also from the bottom, by members of the scientific community, whose motives vary from naive idealism to cynical power-grabbing.

As I understand it, gain of function research in viruses involves trying to increase transmissibility, virulence, and the jump between species. Is my understanding correct and / or did I leave something out? And if that is the definition, how were Fauci and NIH not involved in funding gain of function research?
Western civilization had a good run, but within the next 10 to 25 years it will crumble.

The author was correct in her criticisms of politicized science and acknowledgement of the same trends now in the west. Although she offered no remedies other than warnings, her subtle equivocations exposed her to me as a leftist and someone who very likely concedes a major role for the state in the area of science. The long (Marxist) march through the institutions in not a new phenomenon. I graduated from a relatively conservative university (UofA) almost 50 years ago and the Marxist professoriate was already making its mark. Today, very little science is not politicized (virtually 100% politicized in climate, environment, and related spheres) in state funded or owned institutions. Those equivocations (of the author) underscore the fatal conceit of conservatives who justify their compromises with statists to attain power which, for all intents and purposes has amounted to a sad historical joke. Ayn Rand predicted all of this 64 years ago and was vilified by conservatives at the time, if not for her atheism, then for her ‘unwillingness to compromise’.
The mentality of the acceptability of and belief in the benign, unlimited in function – state, combined with the recurring certainty of democratically-induced civilizational suicide has brought us to this point.

If “social justice” was justice then it would not need the qualifier “social”.
Therefore “social justice” is not justice.
Therefore “social justice” is, by definition, injustice.
Everyone fighting for “social justice” wants injustice visited upon you. Act accordingly.

Just finished Dr. (MD) Nicole Saphier’s “Panic Attack,” which “is what happens when one party declares they are the party of science and then assumes everything they want to be true is now scientific.” A recommended book to counter covid misinformation.
Besides being an illuminating and good read, it is a non-judgmental assessment of events, so an excellent unbiased reference.
She cuts through the scientism, media ignorance and political bafflegab on the virus, its origins, lockdowns, masks, and most of all missed opportunities by government, such as early actions taken in Taiwan and Singapore, but eschewed elsewhere, and those deadly consequences. She explores the various virus origin theories and lays bare China and WHO disinformation and coverups.
While she describes in excruciating detail missteps and lethal blunders, it’s for accountability not blame, that best left to voters.
