    1. The most wonderful birthday gift I ever got was the chance to sing “Chain Gang” on stage with the legendary a cappella group, the Persuasions. They played the Horseshoe on Queen Street in Toronto on my 27th birthday, and one of my kind friends took me there, and then sat us where I was most accessible when Jerry, the lead singer, pulled somebody out of the audience to do the grunting on “Chain Gang”. I was up to it, if I say so myself. I certainly savoured every “Oohh! Aahh!”. When we were done, I took a bow and got an enthusiastic ovation, and Jerry grimaced and made a show of being miffed at me stealing his thunder.

      I felt at the time that he was just having fun. The group took a long break, during which it seemed Jerry had knocked back several drinks and perhaps picked a fight, and in the second set he was in an ugly mood. He got genuinely miffed a couple of times and you could see the difference. No fun at all. He was a troubled fellow, I gather he died recently. But he had God’s gift of song, and when we met to face, he was good to me.

      And I will always associate that experience with that song.

I give you “balloon framing ” being held out as a standard construction. It hasn’t been the standard since the early 19 hundreds. Obviously , production of relatively usable inexpensive housing should be discouraged. Seems like we are curing that with 10 dollar 2 x 4 studs (not all are the same) 100 dollar sheathing and 200 thousand dollar postage size lots. It is not to say there is not room for improvement. It appears to me the program is to drive the costs so high that purchasing a home will be a multi generational task that enslaves you and your descendants to pay forever on something you will never really own.
