  6. Back in the day, when I took a first year geology course, the professor gave several examples of where engineers ignored geology with disastrous results. One of them was in Italy – the Vajont Dam – where a massive rockslide into the reservoir caused a wave to overtop the dam itself and cascade into the valley below with serious loss of life. As I remember, the prof said that the locals’ reference about the topography was something to the effect that these were “the mountains that move” but that the engineers designing and building the dam ignored the warning. Sadly, the locals died.
    It seems that, from the Oroville Dam saga, engineers still haven’t learned a lot. As a geology student, I leaned that one has to respect the rock structures; too many engineers still seem to believe that enough concrete will solve any problem.

      1. Yup, and we know what happened there more than 6 decades ago. One could still find at least one of the anchor points on the south bank about ten or a dozen years later.

        By the way, its sister bridge was at the Liard River, which is around Mile 500 of the Alaska Highway, nearly 50 years ago.

        The replacement of the suspension bridge at Taylor is a steel grate deck structure. It’s way overdue for replacement as it has to be constantly repaired now. Victoria, of course, doesn’t give a rat’s patootie.

    3. The Oroville Dam problem is the same as PG&E’s problem. One threatened to drown a large swath of the State the other has incinerated millions of acres and hundreds of people. What’s the common California problem? Lack of proper maintenance. That’s all.

      Maintenance and repair is costly, and is decidedly un-sexy. Here in CA … you get elected and promoted by promising to spend like crazy on a clean, green, future! Yeayyy ay yyy *cough* *cough*. Diverting funds away from all that boring stuff can make you ‘LOOK’ good. As Steely Dan sang … no bad cards can make you money, so you hide them when you’re able. Maintenance costs are “bad cards”. Jerry Brown hid Oroville’s problems … kicked the un-sexy repairs down the road. And PG&E? Criminally negligent.

      BUT … all the catastrophes perpetrated by both the State government and PG&E … were explained away as … the effects of Global Warming. Too much rain … and too much heat/fire. So … the REAL cause of Oroville’s FAILure? You! Your “sinful” driving to work. Your “sinful” abuses of mother Gaia. See how this insanity works? Civil Engineering? Puhleeze …

      1. Many years ago, when my parents had their last pair of dachshunds, my mother called me one night. She and my father had taken the two critters out for a walk after dark, but the weather was windy and it had started to rain.

        One of the dogs had run off and she, of course, was worried about the little lady.

        I told her that the critter would likely want to find a place that was warm and dry and to start looking for something like that. About an hour later, my mother called back and said that they had found the dog and that she had, indeed, taken shelter out of the weather.

        After that, my mother sewed a pair of vests for each of them and my father put on some LEDs so that the dogs could be located at night when they were outside. I found those vests as I was going through stuff in the house, but I have no idea if they ever worked as intended or for how long they were used.

        1. Sure I remember. The Captain, Bob Pearson was, like me, also a glider pilot. On final to Gimli, he was high, so he did what is second nature to a glider pilot to get down: an aggressive sideslip (aka a forward slip). Must have scared the crap out of the passengers.

          He was treated relatively well since he was following procedures to the letter, and the procedures contained a huge error.

    1. I wonder if it would garner the same response if a homeless person urinated or defecated on the pride colors. I personally don’t understand the idea of pride colors on crosswalks etc. A national flag and or Military Colors are considered to be “sacred” and defacing them or dropping them on the ground is a great insult and in many cases can result in criminal charges. What if a person stepped in dog crap and didn’t clean his shoes before walking on the pride crosswalk, it that an offense.
