Re: the steamed wood. That appeared to be manufactured lumber. The laminations evident in the finished pics. I expect the laminating glues soften in the steamer, allowing the layers of wood to slide past one another. When dried, the glues restore bonding.
I suspect this requires special glues intended for this purpose
