Indigenous Services Canada says that, as of Tuesday, there were 4,069 COVID-19 cases on reserves in Canada. Of those, 1,564 were active.
In Manitoba, infections of Indigenous people living on and off reserve have surged in recent weeks. First Nations people are also experiencing more severe outcomes, the response team’s data shows.
As of Wednesday, there were more than 1,713 active cases among First Nations people on and off reserves in Manitoba. First Nations patients made up 26 per cent of hospitalizations and 45 per cent of people in intensive care.
So far, 45 First Nations members in the province have died from COVID-19 — the vast majority in the last couple of weeks. The average age of death was 66, while it was 83 for Manitoba’s overall population. An Indigenous boy under the age of 10 died last weekend.

The reasons why a larger proportion of First Nations people are struggling with COVID are entirely due to poor diets, a lack of exercise and a genetic propensity for diabetes (people who are diabetic tolerate cold better – different story) and overcrowding in homes. All high risk factors for dying of COVID. If your health is poor you will die of anything faster, not just COVID.

All Seniors living in communal situations (LtC and Retirement Homes)
AND
All Reserve Populations over 16. (hasnt been tested on those under 16)
The issue is that the Indigenous and Reserve pops are concentrated disproportionately in Western Canada and even more so in Manitoba. Manitobas concern is if vaccine is doled out proportionally by overall pop they may not have enough for the non indigenous groups mentioned above. Feds should set aside about 1.6 million doses for Armed Forces and Reserves Populations, then divide by population (minus reserve population) after that. Takes care of everyones concerns.
End of the day though seniors under 85 definitely arent seeing a vaccine till Q2. Anyone under 65 likely isnt seeing a vaccine till end of June, when the Americans AND Mexicans AND Japanese etc will be done.

There seems to be two different stories on this. I guess it depends on who you want to believe.

Its not a matter of belief. If you have something that says it alters DNA I will read it. BUT the high level of how it works is that messenger RNA (mRNA) is delivered to into cells. mRNA then gets the cell it is in to produce what the mRNA instructions are.
This is similar to how the virus works with some really important differences. The instructions from the vaccine are only to produce the Spike Proteins that sit on the outside of the virus. Those spikes give the virus its crown (or corona) appearance. The cell dutifully produces Spikes, and only Spikes. The body recognizes the Spikes as foreign and goes about its normal business of building antibodies, including memory cells (they keep the pattern in cells in the bone marrow). But the Spikes in this case don’t do anything else, which is part of the reason a second shot is needed.
In contrast the virus is a cell containing mRNA with the spikes on the outside. The spikes attach or dock with a human receptor called ACE2. The Spike fits the Ace receptor, like lego blocks. Once docked the spike acts opens the receptor and injects the contents of the virus cell, its RNA. The difference is the Virus RNA tells the cell to produce the whole virus spike and virus and then those newly produced virus go out and look for more Ace receptors to attach to and do this all over again.
The body reacts similarly but now its a race between how fast the full virus is replicating and how quickly your body can build antibodies. If you are un inoculated or not previously infected your immune system has no prior memory and there is a delay giving the Virus a head start in the replication race.
In the vaccine case if, for the sake of argument, 500 cells get the inoculation into them. Those cells will produce spikes but they eventually die or are attacked by the immune system who see they are producing something they shouldnt. And thats it. In the infection 500 infected cells pump out more virus till they die, but those virus go one and infect 100’s of more etc etc.
No DNA changes involved, nobody grows a tail etc. Your body now has immune cells floating around, for some timeframe, they have to watch to see. But most importantly your immune system not has the pattern in in memory cells in your bone marrow. So when you see the virus again they body has the pattern and starts attacking the virus quickly, winning the race, so to speak.
Other platforms work a little differently, Viral Vector vaccines use a relatively harmless cold virus to deliver the same genetic information to cells to make spike proteins. Dead Virus vaccines cant replicate but provide a pattern. Some have some disadvantages, dont want to whitewash them, but essential point is nobody is being turned into something they arent from a genetic basis.
I hope that helps, please dont fall for vaccine conspiracies, which are different from legitimate science and testing questions that arise with any new vaccine and medicine. But as always, be informed about what you put in your body and work with your Doctor in an honest and open relationship on these things.

Surely the vast numbers of overweight, diabetic, substance-abusing, sedentary lifestyles, etc. on-reserve has nothing to do with the higher mortality rates therein, no?
Absolutely does. But second issue is their distance from health care. The isolation was good at the beginning, something I wish our Federal Government took more seriously for the entire country when this began, but once it gets in the community the lack of access contributes or compounds the issues. Small homes, multigneration families in the homes also contribute.
You can get to an innoculation driven herd immunity fast with these small communities and not have to worry about how you will help people who need hospitalization (expensive evac) or building field hospitals in remote areas. We have enough, get it done and out of the way. Even if you ignored them as a group you wouldnt have enough vaccine to make a decent dent into the urban senior population. We need more vaccine, which is why the slow start and low flow are problematic. There are good public health, economic and ethical reasons to ensure the reserve population is dealt with early. What will be a problem is if, given our low supply and flow, that other groups, including non reserve indigneous, try to use status on the tough life’o’meter to get put ahead.
It will not be healthy from a societal point of view if characteristics beyond groupings of age and health are used to order the line up. It will be tried, it should be resisted. The British order is quite acceptable, essentially climb down the age ladder as you get supply.
