Vice Presidential Debate: Open Thread

Some reactions that I concur with).

OOOHHH… Pence just hit Harris in the nuts on her Breonna Taylor answer, reminding her she was a Crown Prosecutor.

  1. Pence’s first response should be, ” Because this is a debate, nothing my opponent says tonight should be believed.”

  2. Who cares? Seriously.

Who, after watching this debate, thinks: I was going to vote for Trump/Biden, but now I’m voting for the other guy. Please describe this person to me.

    1. A very significant number of voters think it likely that Harris will become POTUS if Biden wins. So very relevant that’s she’s far left and pence should hammer her on it

      1. You’re not wrong; I’ve said many times that if Biden wins, Harris will become POTUS no later than January 21, 2023.

But Dave’s not wrong either; the VP debates don’t move the needle. And the polls across the board are simply all pointing the wrong way. Biden’s ahead, he’s ahead substantially, and he’s been ahead the entire race. Because he is the “Get Trump the F*** OUT!” vote and that’s all he has to be.

In all likelihood, Biden’s going to win, and he’s going to win by a big enough margin that there won’t be any reasonable grounds to contest it. I don’t like it one bit. I wish there were enough Trump voters out there to overcome this. I just don’t think America’s got it in her any more. She’s going left, she’s going down, and she may not recover from this. Ever.

        1. You do know that Conservatives and Republicans
          1. Think pollsters are scum and refuse to answer.
          2. Think pollsters are scum and outright lie to them.
          3. Think pollsters are scum and hang up on them
          4. Think pollsters are scum and dump their land line to avoid crank calls.

So its no wonder Liberals and Democrats get oversampled. All the polls said Trump would be destroyed in 2016. And what happened? A decisive electoral college victory. Even with massive cheating and fraud by the democrats.

          1. Trump drew an inside straight and won in 2016. He carried his swing states by thin margins, and he had some important factors in his favour then: 8 years of a Democrat presidency, no incumbent running, a particularly loathsome opponent, the country in a not-so-bad state.

Now he’s the incumbent so he’s facing the “change parties” instinct, his opponent isn’t loathsome (mentally absent but not loathsome), and the country’s in a bad state. Presidents wear the state of the country, rightly or wrongly.

I acknowledge that conservatives tend to get under-sampled in polls and the voting results can often skew right from the polls, but I heard a lot of that talk in the runup to 2012. Look at Romney’s rallies vs Obama’s, look at the D/R skew in the polls, the debate moderators are so biased, blah blah. And Obama cleaned Romney’s clock and it wasn’t even close.

Hilary Clinton was a uniquely bad candidate for POTUS, someone who was hated by one side and not terribly well liked by the other. I’m not convinced Trump would have beaten anyone other than her. We shall see in a month.

    2. It is the 5% of drooling undecided imbeciles in the middle that the debates are trying to convince… and Pence did great, much better than Trump did.

  3. The Debate Moderator is Susan Page who wrote the glowing book on Nancy Pelosi due out next April:
Madam Speaker: Nancy Pelosi and the Lessons of Power. Pretty much sums it up.

  4. Kamala Harris’ voice is like nails on a chalkboard. But beyond that, she’s an awful person.

She is a role model for how college age girls should interact with older gentlemen however, so there’s that…

    1. Simply, I can’t recall viewing a more dislikable person than Kamala Harris. I can’t decide what was more irritating…her lies and misrepresentations or her constant juvenile smirk. A third rater, for sure.

Pence on the other hand was the adult on the stage.

      1. Seriously? No one can beat Hillary for unlikable. Can they? Is that even possible?

          1. Sorry rob83, I agree with Kevin, Clinton is a shrill, ugly, evil, demonic, loathsome, witch.
I detest Harris, and Michelle, and Warren, and and and, but Clinton is the corrupt queen of the demoncratic party.

  5. Could the moderator be any more transparent in using her platform to scold the president?

Who is more annoying, Kamala or JustUN??

  6. She’s got more artificial hair than Beyonce’!! I’m just WAITING for her to say … “mansplaining”

    She is relentlessly shrill.

    1. The tweeter is about how he was mansplaining and alot about a fly. Apparently a red eye on a conservative rabbit is a sign of COVID.

Nothing on her taking points from the left, none.

So, he was pretty fly for a white guy (I stole that).

  7. Kamala behaves like a cluster-b malignant narcissist. She’s a low-life and she’s abrasive.

    Susan Page is worse.

  8. Did she seriously borrow Chrystia Chomiak’s makeup artist? I bet she couldn’t even get Biden to sniff her hair.

    #dobetter

  9. First 2 questions:
Ms. Harris – What is your plan and,
Mr. Pence- What is your excuse?

    Nice!

    1. Yep, that’s exactly why I quit watching. At least Pence pointed out that Biden’s plan pulls heavily from what Trump is already doing. And he pointed out that once again, Biden is guilty of plagiarism. I hope he does well.

  10. I was unable to watch past the first question. It was obvious that they’re going to gang up on Pence, and if he fights back against those two women, well then… SEXISM!!!

Also, Harris is thoroughly unlikable. There is just something about her that I am unable to tolerate. She’s either laughing off serious questions as a way of avoiding them, lying about things that are easily fact checked (Tu Pac is her favorite living rapper is the latest), or acting all morally superior (this from a person with no observable morals). I don’t want to think of having to live the next four years with her, first as the vice president, and then, when they “retire” Joe, our president.

  11. There needs to be a fact checker on the”questions” the moderator is asking. I’m done.

  12. This VP Debate means a lot more than any other VP Debate before now. If Biden wins, he isn’t going to be President for long, if at all. That means Harris would be. We are witnessing what we’d get if she becomes President…and it ain’t good.

Having said all of that, I still think Trump wins.

  13. Mike Pence to Kamala Harris: “You’re entitled to your opinion but you’re not entitled to your own facts.”

Kamala Harris: low voice… “good one”

    She lost the debate!

  14. I believe Kurt Schlicter nailed it when he said of Harris, “Never trust anyone who knows what Willie Brown tastes like.”

  15. My takeaway is that Harris is a apologist for much (and rightly) critisized Iran deal. This should be a major red-flag .

        1. You think Fox is unbiased?

Almost all of the polls are refusing to publish the samples they are using. That alone is a red flag.

You obviously can’t recognize propaganda when you see it and are easily manipulated. I have a bridge you might like to buy.

          1. The Murdoch boys are as left/liberal as you can get. Despite the more radical of the two leaving there is still a drift away from the right.

I am not aware of any news source that is not biased. That includes the ones that I can tolerate sitting through.

          2. Sure Deb, How much, and where’s it located? Can I get a mortgage?

They’re all biased, but at least I can watch Fox, and yeah, I’ve noticed their slow slink away from the right. Anyone who doesn’t take the time to look at a variety of news feeds, and then make their own better informed opinion, which may or may not be the correct answer or result, will also be biased by their personal political outlook as well. However, if you have a better way, let me know. As to the bridge, hopefully, it doesn’t project to far over troubled water, as we have enough of those already!

    1. The key to the accuracy of this poll is:
“Conducted October 3-6, 2020 under the joint direction of Beacon Research (D) and Shaw & Company (R), this Fox News Poll includes interviews with 1,107 randomly chosen registered voters nationwide who spoke with live interviewers on both landlines and cellphones. The survey includes results among 1,012 likely voters. The poll has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus three percentage points for both registered and likely voters.”

As a person with a good background in statistics and questionnaire design, I ask:
      1) First of all, how can one defend the sampling methodology? First of all, the sample size is way to small, only maybe 2,119 , although this is unclear, voters for a population of 245,000,000. The polling firm has not accounted for sample size error, as they basically sampled maybe 40 per state (more likely calling in their area code at dinner; so now one adds more sampling error.
      2) No information on how they stratified the registered or likely folks or weighted the sample by whether they vote (even registered voters don’t vote) or what variables they used (age, sex, race, $, whatever). More huge error, as 40, as you only find one or two in voters in a state of who supposedly represent everyone like them. There is a hint that they did not stratify their sample anyway, as the registered voters were randomly selected. Maybe no one under 30 answered. More error;
      3) Then you have phone-answerers vs. non phone answerers and hang-uppers, with no attempt to find out whether those groups differ on their questions. More huge error;
      4) Run the results through a program that the poll designers do not understand and, by magic, a fancy error rate that looks scientific and cool.

This does not even touch on loaded questions by naïve amateur or cleverly unscrupulous questionnaire designers, who want the correct results for paying clients. Or mischief, heh, heh, which I like doing after SDA tips.

No wonder polls don’t capture anything that represents “true” opinion that is representative of the population or even less so, their future behaviour. Yet, increasingly, governments are relying on bad opinion polls.

      1. … not to mention the omission of the obligatory qualifier on accuracy of the margin of error:

        « … 19 times out of 20. »

They conflate this with sampling error, which is another thing altogether.

    2. Mike.

I read thru that whole poll. Must have been 60+ pages worth. The claimed they asked 1000+ people, but never give you to numbers of which party?
      % of dems
      % of Rep
      % of Ind.

      Nuts

      1. Did they report how many people told them to eff off when they answered the phone or when they saw it was “XYZ Research” turned them off? Because that’s what Republicans/Conservatives do.

The only use I have for pollsters is if I am having a bad morning and I see one is calling I can ridicule their job, curse their mothers and mock their genitalia and feel refreshed and invigourated again.

  16. Pence should refuse to participate in the agenda tonight – instead ask (and repeatedly so) five Qs – on Scotus stacking, A what point in pregnancy is abortion illegal?, ending the filibuster, statehood for DC & PR, socialized healthcare. All can be basic Y/N answers.

  17. Bingo!!
He his talking about Dems not accepting the election!!
Turned the question over on the moderator!!

  18. Wow, this is new:

Kamala Harris just revealed that Joe Biden would legalize marijuana and expunge the record of anyone who had a record in relation to breaking marijuana laws.

    “Don’t worry, be happy,
It’s gonna be a bright (bright)
    Bright (bright) sunshiny day”

    1. Nancy, MJ is a non issue to most people, so that would be a waste of time. And records for it’s use should be expunged, unless it involves minors!

      1. Perhaps, I never heard mention of it until now though. I just thought that it would’ve been Joe’s announcement, not hers.

    2. the turn around on that, is how many people have marijuana records because of Kamala Harris – Prosecutor?

    3. A lot of nasties got put into State on MJ, when the prosecutors could not get solid-enough evidence for the worst stuff.

    1. Yes, Pence did very well, indeed. He was slick in handling loaded questions, yet always very polite and sincere. He looked like a President.

I hate Kamala’s views and she would be a terrifying President (way too emotional, “I am talking”, way too inexperienced), but she was sort-of good in the debate, in comparison to Biden, making some of her points (not on the economy or justice, or law-and-order), so Democrats will be happy.

      1. The debate was a civil affair. Mike Pence’s experience served him well. Harris’s face-making style failed her miserably, it was too valley-girl like for a V.P. Debate.

Pence was crafty enough to finish his sentences even though the Moderator, Susan Page, kept reminding him repeatedly, when his time was up. Once, when his next turn came to speak again he wisely took his time to finish his reply from the previous question asked of him. No one cut him off. This was a brilliant move on his part because of the importance of the question. He wasn’t about letting them be happy for having cut him off. Kudos to Mike! I believe this move made him be the ultimate winner of the debate.

        From the N.Y. Post:

“Pence is a skilled and disciplined debater, and his understated manner masks a killer instinct. He was always good, terrific at times and put on a clinic in how to methodically carve up an opponent.”

    1. Trump doesn’t prep. It’s not his thing. I think they should cancel the remaining debates as they are meaningless.

      1. PDJT does prep, but his prep time is limited as he has a pretty time consuming job.

Canceling the debates would be terrible. PDJT did better in the second and third debate in 2016, it takes him a bit to hit his stride.

      1. Nah BA, its just polite cussing, as in, I don’t fracking know what I’m doing….or why!

  19. Pence looks like an airline pilot who makes a great first officer to the aircraft commander.

And he, like all of us, are learning good lessons from the current Commander in Chief, and hopefully those lessons help Pence in 2024.

Are all of us being played by media? Fox hires that despicable lying low life Donna Brazile, CNN and MSNBC are driven insane. Media polling however says Biden is ahead? He could hold one of his rallies in a mini-van if it wasn’t for “social distancing” while Trump fills airports and has flotillas – yet Joe is winning?

Hundreds of millions are being given to media from the campaigns, is this their last chance to cash in before it’s all over for them?

    1. I loved Mike Pence in “Airplane”. He was also good in the first “Naked Gun” movies.

  20. Kevin McCarthy (R- Cal) was just on The Laura Ingraham Show on FNC, they were discussing the fact that when the issue of Biden and China came up during tonight’s debate, the whole segment was censored on Chinese TV. The Chinese don’t let their people know about any outside negative talk.

      1. Thank goodness for the Internet, …. for now …. until hate (i.e., conservative views and free thought) are regulated, just like China.

  21. I’m wondering if the Dems will be playing this clip on MSNBC tomorrow to help them forget Kammy’s televised Little Bighorn in Utah: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=YSbbnoRLoxw . I’d bet those clowns know exactly who Mikka Pynse is now that the debate wait’s over for their pain faced eye rolling starlet. Her arse was wiped better than a dog with a bad case of worms over shag carpet.

    1. The right wing echo chamber raved about how Trump “won” his debate.

A week later, the polls are in showing that Trump’s position continues to deteriorate and the majority of voters thought Trump’s debate performance was pathetic.

Now we see the echo chamber raving about Pence “winning” but the similar script will likely play out because Trump supporters simply don’t understand what matters to majority of Americans.

      1. I had read that Trump support is up in all 50 states. The Presidential debate was awash in most people’s view. We must consult different sources for our information. It is virtually impossible to get a straight story ftom any media source these days, and of course social media is divided along partisan lines. Best advise is to take everything with a grain of salt.

      2. The polls show Trump position deteriorating for two reasons:
        1. Demoralize Trump voters into thinking “Why bother voting, it’s a lost cause.”
        2. When Trump wins, they can say it was through fraud because all the polls showed him losing.

Plus, they’re oversampling Democrats over Republicans and passing it off as ‘balanced’.
        Simple, really.

    2. CNN, eh? Which has about a 99% Democrat viewership. It’s about as accurate as the polls showing Biden with big leads.

  22. You guys really need to make up your mind on the SCOTUS.

You all seem to think that raw power is the only thing that matters. Conventions, ethics, morality, etc mean nothing to a Trump Republicans. If the Trump Republicans can do something that advances their power they should do it.

Given the rules that you guys are clearly in favour of the question should be: why shouldn’t the Democrats pack SCOTUS if they can?
And why should they make any commitment one way or another in advance?

      1. Nothing wrong with my facts. I am simply repeating statements that were made on this forums that raw power is the only thing that matters to Trump supporters and that arguments based on ethics or morality are irrelevant if they get in the way of Trump doing what ensures his power (we need the same story playing out with the grotesque voter suppression tactics being used in Republican states).

Of course, those same people rant and rave about the alleged ethical failings of democrats but, as they say, people in glass houses should not throw stones.

        1. That’s nonsense. Why would you believe that portrayal of Trump supporters coming from Trump haters?

        2. What hilarious comments by Comrade TimG. Raw power…..yet it is the Democrat Deep State that planned a soft coup. By the way, moron, you obviously don’t know what is meant by the Dems “packing the court”. What a dunce.

        3. “Nothing wrong with my facts. ”

That’s only because you didn’t show up with any.

It’s Democrat LEADERS and pundits that have been talking about stacking SCOTUS and ALSO adding new states to undemocratically cement power, NOT the Republicans, you factless dumbass.

“And why should they make any commitment one way or another in advance?”

I find it absolutely amazing that anyone could be so f*cking obtuse as to even ask that question. The fact you apparently couldn’t care less what the Dem’s position is openly exposes your blind loyalty to the left AND your arrogant contempt for democracy. Politicians are ANSWERABLE to us voters, again, you factless dumbass.

“The right wing echo chamber raved about how Trump “won” his debate.”

I still find it amusing that leftards can convince themselves that conservatives could ever live in an information bubble in today’s society. A conservative cannot live their life without constantly being bombarded with leftist opinion while most liberals never, ever hear unfiltered messages from the right. You also failed to mention that the MSM fell lockstep into declaring the Dems as absolute winners in both debates, you factless and disingenuous dumbass.

So, the only real question left for me is if your grossly dishonest mischaracterization of the general opinion on court stacking here at SDA is due to leftist group-think ignorance or just plain old leftist hatred and bigotry against conservatives. But then, from what I have witnessed of the delusional left these past few years, it’s most probably due to both.

          1. “It’s Democrat LEADERS and pundits that have been talking about stacking SCOTUS and ALSO adding new states to undemocratically cement power, NOT the Republicans, you factless dumbass.”

It is Republican lawmakers that blocked Obama’s SCOTUS appointment 10 months before an election but then immediately rush to fill an open seat 1 month before an election you factless dumbass. It is Republican law makers that have demonstrated that ethics an morality don’t matter. Given the standards that *Republican lawmakers* have created it is perfectly appropriate for Democrats to stack the court or add new states.

Basically, you have no business whindging about what the democrats do because Republicans set the groud rules for amoral political opportunism.

“I still find it amusing that leftards can convince themselves that conservatives could ever live in an information bubble in today’s society.”

ROTFL – Being in a bubble does not mean you do not hear outside information – it means you refuse to believe anything that does not come from the bubble. This blog is filled with delusional posters who cling to any number of falsehoods and conspiracy stories in order to convince themselves that they don’t need to pay attention to things that are said outside their information bubble.

Your own post is a classic example of a bubble living denisen. You call me names like “leftard” because you need to put me the box for “evil people guilty of wrong think” even though you know nothing about what my political positions other than I despise Trump because I prioritize ethics and morality over political benefit.

So yes, you live in a bubble that is disconnected from the reality of the world whether you want to admit it or not.

        4. Raw power? What in the heck are you smoking.
What party is talking about stacking the courts. What party is pushing to keep conservative people quiet like the IRS did to the tea-party during O-dumbers time.

What party is supporting terror groups like Antifa and BLM.

Jezz fool, go buy a few brain cells.

    1. FDR tried that and it blew up Tim.

When you look at the Far left libs both Clinton and O-dumber picked, compared to what the Republics pick for the courts. It’s a huge difference.
By the way, Polls shows Americans are not in favor of packing, but did say if it was to happen. The wanted more conservative judges not libs.

      1. Polls also say Americans think the next president should fill Ginsberg’s seat. But polls only matter when they don’t agree with you right?

        1. Polls don’t matter when the LAW/Constitution is on the Prez side you fool.
Like you. I’m guessing many have not read it or just think the MSN knows it all.

    2. There’s a lot of projection in this post lol.
Always blame your opponent for whatever it is you’re doing.

  23. The oh look a squirrel media seems more interested this morning in the fly that appeared, than issues discussed.

  24. Question:

Mrs. Harris. All the young impressionable and politically ambitious young women want to know the precise number of blow jobs one must give, and to whom they must be given, in order to secure the position of Attorney General of California?

  25. Harris reassured her base and any voter leaning that way. She was glib and self-assured and the lies came smooth and easy. Hasn’t Biden already claimed the new green deal as one of his first priorities as president which specifically bans fracking and cancels Keystone.

  26. A friend pointed out that Pence should have just repeated what Tulsi Gabbard said to Harris during the Democratic nominee’s debates, which effectively took Harris out of the race. He could have even credited Gabbard, so no one could accuse him of plagiarism.

  27. Pence definitely shone, compared Trump’s shit show last week. Unfortunately, it won’t be enough. I don’t see the GOP being able to come back. Maybe it’s just as well. Give them 4 years to rebuild and have the true Republicans take back the party. Currently, it’s the party of Trump and definitely not the party of Lincoln. Dems will likely self destruct anyway and GOP can sweep in 2024. If only Pence could be a the top of the ticket today. Trump is a sick man.

  28. If all ” THEY” can talk about is the fly ( CNN) then you know they got nothing!

  29. People see what their bias wants them to see when they watch these things. Every time your candidate lands a punch, there’s a catharsis. The electorate is the most decided it’s been in recent history. These two are playing for a tiny fraction of undecided votes that won’t make a difference. Nobody “won”.
