        0-19 years: 99.997%
        20-49 years: 99.98%
        50-69 years: 99.5%
        70+ years: 94.6%
        Those numbers are practically identical to those of the flu. In other words, practically no one dies from it.

Excess mortality data shows clearly that the number of people dying in the US (as elsewhere) is significantly (though not apocalyptically) higher than recent historical trends would suggest — over 40% during the spring peak, over 20% during the summer.           It’s worth remembering that in those charts, the upswings and peaks in the spring and summer (looking at US data) are what happens with few physical distancing or other public health protocols in place. The downswings and troughs are what happens once public health measures are implemented.

          Now, not all of that excess death is directly due to contracting COVID. Some of it is opioids, or suicide, or some other despair linked to the economic shutdown. Some of it is due to people dying of some other medical issue because they avoided or couldn’t get medical care. Even among COVID-specific excess deaths, some of it is mortality displacement, which one could argue is more tolerable from a medical ethics perspective.

          But the fact remains, those factors don’t explain all the observed excess mortality, which leaves a significant number of those excess deaths directly due to a COVID-19 infection. COVID-19 is a real thing. It’s not the Plague, but it’s also not a common cold either. The answer to what one perceives to be Democrat/Deep State/media lies is not to retreat into one’s own alternate reality of unsupported lies; it’s a somber, balanced advancement of facts.

The historical trend takes into account average rates of cancer death, heart disease death, seasonal flu death, etc. The fact that this year looks different from other years — clear spikes in raw death counts that precisely mirror the timing of COVID-19 infection case rates — indicates that COVID-19 is a real medical concern.

            I do agree with you that much of the media coverage — the endless daily drumbeat of case counts, questionable pronouncements from opinion journalists lacking any infectious disease or medical expertise — has been problematic. And we can have real debates about whether the epidemiology and pathology of COVID-19 justify lockdown measures, and which if any of the various public health strategies employed by different jurisdictions around the world is most effective. But blindly claiming that COVID-19 is a completely overhyped non-event is simply an un-serious position to take given the facts on hand.

Up until now, most testing sites rely on polymerase chain reaction (PCR), which “amplifies” the RNA of the virus. So, we may be detecting the presence of the virus in the nasal cavity, but not an infection (which others pointed out elsewhere in this thread). So, ya, number of “cases” reflects the number of “positive detections”, and not necessarily infections. (As an aside, molecular palaeontology uses PCR to “amplify” any genetic material remaining In fossilized or preserved organic material!)

    I experienced that a couple of weeks ago when I was in the waiting room of the Doctors office and had to sit there and listen to CNN. The only CNN I see are clips Tucker and the others show which last 30 seconds or so but this was for WAY too long. I knew they were a truly disgraceful cable “news” show but like Kate I’d forgot just how disgraceful.
    Sadly, daytime Fox is becoming CNN lite. Practically every daytime show today Chris Wallace was a guest and every appearance he went on and on about the First Family and how they weren’t wearing masks at the debate and how they came in late so the test results would not of been known etc etc. Then he was given time to blame Trump for the debate debacle. Zero push back of course because he’s considered a Star of the Network for some reason.

    1. My longest exposures to CNN were when i used to take my brother for his regular checkups regarding his kidney transplant. Unrelenting and they amp each other up as the day progresses, trying to top each other.

  41. What a lot of you are missing in discussing the number of covid deaths in the States is that hospital charges go through the roof for covid patients. Hence if a death is written up as a covid death the hospital has a greater profit loss margin. It would be interesting to see what the hospitalization costs truly are when this pandemic is over. As it stands right now there are only a few doctors even breaching this subject since the American Medical Association is on board with hospital charges. Nothing like not letting a crisis go to waste.

  42. Further to my last comment, consider this. If Trump under goes the quarantine period and emerges on the other side as hale and hearty, then declares that it was because he took hydroxychloroquine as a prophylactic, imagine the Democratic heads that will explode. Drs. Fauci and Brix will be hung out to dry and Gates can stuff his vaccine where the sun don’t shine. The China flu will be treated across the globe with a generic drug for pennies per prescription because it has worked for Hanks, Johnson, Bolsolano, and a host of others, imagine that!

    Yet, I still don’t personally know anyone who’s been sick or anyone that knows anyone who has been sick.

    The odds are interesting.

    1. I’ve been going to the same Calgary hospital with several units of COVID “cases” in the “news” lately and the predictable oldies croaking, since mid February. Flights still arrive in Calgary from overseas, daily. Never been tested, never seen anyone who looked like they needed testing and the nurses, doctors and staff I deal with don’t look worried about anything but what’s for dinner when they get home.
      No “rush hour traffic” to slow them down.

      1. Over the last day President Trump has developed what they are calling mild symptoms. We shall see.

  44. I agree with Kate’s comment that CNN is a crapfest. I haven’t watched the corrupt network for over a decade. If I accidently channel-surf onto it, I go into a panic and will hurredly do anything with the remote to escape it. CNN is toxic.

  45. Regarding the crapfest that IS CNN … I continue to be astounded by the sheer number of anonymous, unnamed sources they continue to quote as though their ghost-sources are actually REAL people … with REAL access and knowledge.

    The closest thing CNN has to a White House “insider” source is a chambermaid leftover from the Obama Admin. who thought she heard something from someone.

    I don’t have television in the house. No cable, no satellite, nada. Occasionally I see it elsewhere, and every time I do I am shocked at how -bad- it all is. The news. The shows. The comedies. The dramas. The commercials! It’s appalling.

    I look, and I can’t believe I happily watched that garbage my whole life. That’s why a kid with a crappy camera and a microphone can become a millionaire on YouTube doing play-throughs of video games and just screwing around. Because it’s -better- than television.

    Is TV worse now than it used to be? Absolutely. Is CNN the lowest form of disinformation campaign ever devised? I think it might be. Even Herr Goebbels would blush at some of the howlers they’ve been pushing this year.

    Cut that cord, my friends. Snip! You will instantly feel better.
