August 25, 2020: Reader Tips

For tonight’s entertainment we offer you a 1949 radio episode called Iron Curtain Escape, in which a young woman attempts to escape the virtual prison of Communist Czechoslovakia.

Your equally thrilling tips are much appreciated!

  1. I personally knew a young man, Attila Zatatlai(?), who had with his mother and father escaped Hungary in the 1970s. They had themselves shipped West in trunks to escape the Iron Curtain. Attila was a very intelligent but disturbed young man. His father was a cutting edge expert in designing silicon computer chip technology, much sought after by both the east and west in those days. Not long after they had arrived in Calgary, while Attila was still in high school, his mother died of cancer. Very hard, very sad.

As youths, we used to get together with another friend and make milkshakes on the odd Saturday. It was great fun where we would combine bananas, some sort of available jam, and ice cream. We had no idea what we would end up with, but it was a gas.

    1. There are many interesting ‘every-man’ stories told by those who escaped Hungarian style communism. Here’s a cautionary perspective from one of those fellows now an American citizen who wrote this back in 2012:
“Let me be crystal clear, just in case it hasn’t sunk in yet. The state is not your friend. The state is not your protector. The state does not offer you any more security than you could provide yourself with a good firearm. The state does not take care of YOU first; the state takes care of itself first. You get the scraps.”
I wonder what he thinks of today’s events.

    1. Living in Western Canada most small towns have sewage lagoons where all the sewage drains into them.

I call them the: “tRUDEau Sewage Lagoons” … so far I have not had anybody think it was inappropriate …. and think it is a good name. (And this was before the spawn entered the political realm.)

      1. The way they pour raw sewage into the St. Lawrence we should start a petition to rename it the St. Trudeau.

  2. Was a schoolgirl back in the day of the Hungarian uprising; we would discuss the events of the day in sewing class but knew we could do nothing even as Hungarians not much older than us were rising up and dying. A year of so later, a Hungarian family moved into the road across from us, along with their young son. We were friends with them until they moved on.

A year or so later, another Hungarian moved in next door. He had gotten himself out of Hungary well before 1956 and had ended up in Australia. By the time he and family (Australian wife and kids) landed up in our town, the Hungarian revolution was history. But to the new neighbour, it was not that way. Actually, he was rather contemptuous of a lot of the “refugees” from the 1956 uprising as he pointed out that most hadn’t participated in the uprising but took the occasion to flee. I think he was probably correct, but would not fault those who saw a chance for freedom and took it. That was the time when Andy Stewart’s “A Scottish Soldier” was high on the charts, and I remember our neighbour saying he – like that Scottish soldier – would never see his hills of home again.

  3. In mid year 1968, we had a Czechoslovakian girl, fresh from the embattled streets of Prague enter our home room class (English). This was in “troubled” Montreal in the late 60’s, with the FLQ booby trapping our “oppressive” English mailboxes in Anglo parts of Montreal. The froggies left same mailboxes alone in their parts of town. They were sooo oppressed. This was evil Westmount too, ripe for a bloody Marxist revolution in some less than bilingue people’s minds and a guillotine in Philips Square. Today their kids vacay in Koobah. She felt right at home with the commie FLQ/Pequistes. She was damaged goods in my mind, as Lenin seemed to factor large in her daily commentary. We watched the T-34’s roam in Prague on the nightly CTV news, in between reports and videos of riots, bombs and regular foaming at the mouth Marxist, FLQ rampaging mobs in Montreal. I felt so Canadian. Only thing missing were Fwench tricolor and flaming bottles of Pernod. These scmucks weren’t that sophisticated and drank “cinguante” and “mol-son” and copious amounts of “deux draft, caaaaw-lisss, tabernac”. Funny, I never saw that label advertised. You got a slice (and waft) of Kaybec life, strolling by any Rue Sainte Jacques Street, T. A. Vern and Co. establishment. There always seemed to be some guy talking to some guy named Raaaaaaalph in the darkened alley next door.

    1. PO’ed in AB seems to be PO’ed anytime, anywhere.
      PO’ed was even PO’ed as a kid.
T’en fais pas, champion. Les mechants froggies du FLQ ne te tourmenterons jamais plus, mon petit:)

      Sad

    1. I would think any effort to eliminate slave owners would involve removal of 90% of the collection. Remember that at one time most British were serfs who were slaves. They were tied to the land and were sold with the land..

      1. The native British islanders were conquered and enslaved by the Romans and Normans. Can we cancel Europe?

And when strong the Brits in turn conquered and indentured most of the planet at one point or other (including drug addicting the Chinese in vast numbers). Let’s cancel Britain.

    2. Cancel the U.S. Democratic Party. In the South Democrats = KKK.
Cancel Ulysses S. Grant, but not Robert E. Lee. At the time they faced each other in the Civil War, Grant still owned slaves but Lee had freed his inherited slaves, as a matter of conscience, before the war began.

  4. Millions of people wanted to escape communism and still do, yet here in Canada we are embracing it. Americans are falling all over themselves to destroy their constitution and the republic in the name of communism. Not real bright are we? I wonder how much more restrictive our virus prison will get before the government starts killing us?

    1. “I wonder how much more restrictive our virus prison will get before the government starts killing us?”

I’m not going anywhere near a vaccine.

      1. And what do we do when it’s mandatory? Just watched Tucker Carlson and he states Virginia is making it mandatory when it’s available. I, too, am not going anywhere near a vaccine, so long as I have a choice. Sadly, I don’t think choice will be an option.

        1. Resist. Court fights take a looooonnnnngggg time (crowdfund).

Get religion. Retire (for the 3rd time) and get out of the line of sight.

I’m in Ontario too, and they have not even succeeded at properly enforcing immunization requirements for schools. I don’t expect the Feds would be anywhere near as effective as the Province based upon recent operations.

It will take a long time to get down to little peons like me.

    1. One company I own shares in released its quarterly results earlier today. There’s no surprise at the fact that it’s earnings were down something like 20% over the same time last year.

      Thanks for nothing, Prinz Dummkopf.

  5. The Canadian and American media have made their verdict. Last night’s Republican convention was the biggest celebration of Nazism in history. And they dared to have black speakers. As Dementia Joe would say, they obviously ain’t black. Meanwhile in the Peoples Socialist Republic of Canada, Blackie’s loyal CBC is excited that Vancouver has banned street preachers who spread anti homosexual sex messages. And Great Leader fresh back from his many vacations is preparing his big plans to turn Canada into a socialist paradise. He will be talking to the prime minister of New Zealand again as part of his preparations.

  6. Blacklock reports that Angry Adolf’s cabinet is blaming labour shortages, for waivering the requirement that jobless migrants must leave the country before reapplying for work here.

  7. The Canadian Media, led by the CBC and the Red Star will continue to steal canadian elections.
    Why wouldn’t they?
    There is zero pushback.
    Zero.
Conservatives love losing like Liberals love lying.

Nothing, not a single thing, will change until canada’s lying, corrupt Media is addressed.
It won’t be easy, but surely, living on your knees has to get bothersome at some point.
Waiting for the next Adscam to get government is like waiting for a tree to fall in the forest.
With the canadian Media, there’s a good chance nobody will hear about it.

    Fix the Media.
    Stop the lying.
    Fix the country.

    1. It would probably help if the media was not all owned by the same people.

Recent changes to all the Post Media print outlets in my area; Ottawa Citizen, Ottawa Sun and National Post, I might as well save the trouble of reading anything beyond the initial headlines as all the other categorizes are the same thing with the same layout. They are not even trying to be different anymore. Exception being the columnists, and the difference is starting to become minor.

The only one different is Globe and Mail, for whatever that is worth.

Wonder how long it will be until they scrap the different outlets and just publish the Post Media with regional sections.

Can’t speculate on the TV stuff, don’t watch any of the news or special interest channels. PVR is the only way to handle Bell/Rogers/Telus usual offerings.

      1. About 20 years ago, I subscribed to 4 newspapers: The Edmonton Journal, the Grope and Flail, National Post, and The Financial Post. I dropped the NP and FP because they duplicated what I was reading in the EJ. Why pay more than once for the same news?

        1. I used to read at least three a day and the NY Times on Sunday when it was almost a foot thick and bound with twine to keep the whole thing together. Yes, I am that old.

          1. I used to read the NYT as well, including the Sunday edition. It often took me the better part of an hour to go through it.

A long time ago, my social circle included some schoolteachers. Back then, I read 3 newspapers each day. (I was also an active shortwave listener in those days, so I often listened to the BBC World Service news.) Those teachers were proud, even bragging, that they didn’t read any. Two of them taught elementary grades, while another was at a local college.

And we wonder how come our educational system is so lousy?

  8. Just imagine if 6 million Conservative voters bombarded Elections Canada, demanding the expenses of the CBC and the Red Star be counted as Liberal Party election expenses.
Surely any fair investigation would find staggering bias.
The Liberal masters at Elections canada need a wake up call.

A few western separatists will need to be elected.
Sure would be nice to have someone point out just selfish and entitled Quebec is on a daily basis.
And pointing out regularly just how the Liberals are all about Quebec first.
    Conservatives won’t be doing that.

Then we’re back to the “will the Media publicize it “?
canada. Where the fix is always in.

      1. 2019 election results:
        Libs Cons
        Popular vote 6,018,728 6,239,227
        Percentage 33.12% 34.34%

  9. In Ontario the Liberal Party’s Toronto Star own a great number of community newspapers through their Metroland division. They all spout the same socialist crap. A former publisher for Metroland once told me that the paper is just something we wrap in the flyers with.

    1. Yes, our local paper is delivered free to our door along with weekly flyers. It’s truly all it’s worth.

      1. Liz, my wife, as computer illiterate as she is, reads them on her ipad. I like to shop at the same store all the time.

  10. A friend of ours, who is from Mexico, has a nephew who was to start university in Edmonton l this fall. He flew to Canada a couple weeks ago with his mother so they could quarantine here two weeks before getting set up for the start of school in September. Direct flights were not available so they booked their flight to Edmonton through Toronto thinking they could quarantine once they arrived in Edmonton. On landing in Toronto they were advised they would have to quarantine BEFORE flying to Edmonton. That’s the good news! They were also informed that since they did not have a place in Toronto in which to quarantine it would have to be in a hotel. They could select one or one could selected for them. Still good news! Now for the BAD NEWS- they were also advised that their living expenses while in quarantine would be covered by the government. Not the Mexican government, the Canadian Government!!!!

    1. Rather than having this blanket rule, why not give people the option of getting a Covid test. If it is negative, they should not be required to quarantine for two weeks. I guess that would be too simple.

    2. So presumably anyone flying into Toronto on a transfer flight gets put up in Toronto for two weeks, courtesy of the taxpayer, That’s shocking. Will the media be investigating?

    1. Can’t be that majority of Canadians are that stupid.
      Can it?

I think that question was answered last October.

  11. Hitler O’Toole just finished his first presser as leader. Angry Adolf’s loyal, outraged media attacked him with questions that are very important to Canadians right now. Homosexual sex and abortion.

    1. The media/Left are hung up on homosexual affairs and abortion. Apparently these are the most important matters concerning Canadians, how Conservatives, and only Conservatives, feel on these subjects.
For most people neither affect their daily lives, it’s none of their business and neither should it be the business of government at any level. If I were a politician my answer would be it’s none of my business and it’s none of yours to discuss personal matters living in a free and democratic society run by the rule of law.

      1. I read somewhere recently that Journalists have a lower I Q than average. I was skeptical, but maybe that’s correct. Maybe they are stuck on the abortion/homo questions because they lack analytical thinking skills. Perhaps they lack the imagination and brain power to come up with more sophisticated questions. No wonder news media is going to h in a handbasket.

    2. Since we’re living in the Days of Noah, what else can we expect. I don’t know who would want to be leader during this period on God’s calendar. Now that trans are taking over, plain old homo sex will have to take a back seat soon. Anyone running for leader today has to have the fortitude to withstand the assaults of the evil one, and I don’t envy those to try. Defunding the CBC will only make those little red devils angrier.

      1. The trans thing gives rise to an interesting question. If a man who is now a woman is having sex with woman who is now a man is this heterosexual sex?

  12. So…. the CBC is using their old tactics…the ones they used to bury Scheer. They didnt waste any time did they?
Hopefully O’tooles backbone is stiffer and he told those “reporters” to go pound sand!

I dont watch or listen to CBC.

  13. The CBC looked up the definition of a Navigator & reported that O’Toole was simply a technician… They are lost in Stupidity… The RCN Sea-king has two navigators, both Pilots…. Navigation is a task that on big Bombers was assigned to the co-pilot, or a third person (Pilot) when a defined formation was necessary….

  14. Blackie’s loyal, drooling media reports that Angry Adolf’s foreign minister met with the Chinese foreign minister in Rome today. Lots of ass kissing by Frankie Flowers to protect his investments in China.
