Ontario is a net exporter of electricity. The biggest importers of electricity from the US are BC and Quebec.
Ontario was a net importer of electricity in 2023. And was a net electricity importer during the months of February, March and April 2024. In other words, a situation that could surface again…..so Ontario better not get cocky….especially because of where the crude for its refineries comes from.
Someone else here posted that the comments are to appeal to Ford’s voter base in Toronto. I think they are correct. Energy flows both ways seamlessly in a way that should make people sit up and take notice, but they don’t because it’s done so well that is seems as natural as breathing.

If Alberta shut off the taps tomorrow, it would take at least five years of concerted military and civilian effort to get at most half the same amount flowing from Venezuela that the US gets from Alberta. Don’t underestimate the power of Alberta oil.
If Alberta shuts off the taps it will be to eastern Kanada, not to the US.
Initially, I thought that as well, but apparently the US has already designated refineries along the Gulf coast to prioritize Venezuela crude, and in a few short months close to 100 Million barrels have been received. That’s just going to ramp up. Apparently, the infrastucture of US companies that were handling Venezuela oil prior to their descent into Socialism remained abandoned but undamaged and usable in the present after refurbishing.
Keep in mind that Venezeula was very active in subverting the sanctions on themselves and Iran, keeping operations up and running. My understanding is that Alberta moves about 3 Million barrels a day to the US.

Albertan oil production shuts down in 3-5 weeks without US buyers, depending on current fixed storage inventories at Canadian terminals — and it’s good to remember that you don’t have refining capacity at scale, and your oil is heavy, sour, so it needs additives to even get through those pipes. The only option to move oil out of Alberta to non-US export markets is the TMX pipeline, which has a maximum throughput of 900K barrels per day. That’s only 20% of daily production. Also, let me remind you that it will take a while to build more pipeline, and your logistics capacity is rather strained on all fronts at this time.
The most impacted US buyers of reduced or more expensive Canadian oil would be in the Midwest refining complex, who cannot easily substitute for Albertan crude. However, Canada buys a shitload of refined products from those same Midwest refineries, and cannot easily replace that supply. Any increase in price or reduction in supply horseshoes right back to Canadian consumers, particularly in the central and eastern provinces and across all modes of transportation and logistics.
Reducing the flow rate (i.e. export sales to the US) of Albertan oil sands production would trigger immediate mass job layoffs in Alberta and force shut-ins of production sites – these cannot be made operational quickly once offline.
Read that last part: you cause more unemployment in your richest province when your country is in a ‘technical recession’ and in a field where it will not be quick to start back up once taken offline.
But sure…keep playing the leverage game.
I think Alberta and Saskatchewan should show the same level of concern for USA tariff impacts on B.C. and central Canada’s economy as those parts of Canada cared about the economic impact of a decade of Trudeau’s attacks on Alberta and Saskatchewan’s energy industry and China’s economic attacks on the prairie agricultural industry. At best the rest of Canada completed ignored the problems created by Trudeau and China. At worst they gloated and laughed in the faces of prairie energy workers and farmers.
You reap what you sow…Alberta and Saskatchewan have no reason to forgive and forget about the decades of abuse.
If the rest of Canada wants Alberta and Saskatchewan to help them then sign on the dotted line of a binding contract that reforms equalization, legislates provincial control of appointments to courts and senate and fairness in the number of MPs in parliament, plus a veto that ends the federal government’s ability to unilaterally impose laws that are economically destructive to the prairies just to win votes in central and eastern Canada, and a legal method that enables Alberta to sue other provinces and non government organizations for economic damage when they block pipelines.
A disingenuous, nonbinding MOU about potential pipelines to the west coast and Ontario (that will never be built) is meaningless and insulting. Few people in Alberta and Saskatchewan trust the rest of Canada to act in good faith and keep any of their promises. Put it writing, sign it and make the reforms legally binding.

Also, the point of the closed market and quota system is to force the Canadian consumer to subsidize the dairy and eggs. If you break those cartels then it comes down to which government will subsidize their farmers the most.

The workers in most of these plants were unionized and people were better off than today. When I went to university I worked in a packing plant. Working about 5 months a year I drove a new Trans Am. All the older workers owned homes, motorhomes, and other toys. That plant in Edmonton is gone along with 3 others that employed 300 to 700 people. There are no big ones left. Today we are taking a dive to the bottom with deliberately devalued currency and deliberately driven down wages through shithole immigration.

Yes, the US can tariff whatever they want. Up to a point. Then Canada starts to market goods that the US has trade protected to other countries, which is why Canadian aluminum smelters are now starting to sell to Europe. When the tariffs eventually come down — perhaps under a new president — Canadian aluminum manufacturers will have formed long-term relationships with their European buyers, and the US will be stuck buying their aluminum from the war-torn Persian Gulf.
This is a point many miss. Tariffs harm not just the exporting country, but the importing country as well. In particular, it drives up costs in the importing country, making their manufactured goods expensive in their own country and uncompetitive on the world market.
Interesting side note, has anyone noticed how Trump’s tariffs only affect certain provinces but not others? He didn’t touch beef, for example. I think he wants to create friction between the provinces in the hopes of cracking the more or less united front the premiers and Carnage have been showing. As an easterner, I’d love to see Alberta leverage that into a 1 million bpd pipeline to the east coast.
Canada imports a lot of beef and pork from the US. A lot of live beef and pork is exported to the US, butchered, and re-exported. There are a lot of meat packing jobs in the US.
I doubt that concessions on booze and dairy would be much of a win. Just like fentanyl, these are not reasons but excuses by Trump to impose tariffs.

Canadian dairy producers have been paid by the government for “trade injury” over the past several years… even though Canada hasn’t let in near the amount of negotiated imports they are receiving that compensation for, but anyway.

It is an open secret that one large dairy farm about 15 miles south of here has received $4 million from that program.
