Few of the cases in France’s retirement homes are ever tested for the virus, once an initial outbreak has been confirmed. But day after day, stories are emerging of double-digit death tolls inside these institutions, now virtually shuttered from the outside world.
As Italy and Spain have so far seen Europe’s biggest and deadliest outbreaks, so have the elderly in care homes borne the most painful brunt, enveloped by twin crises of mass infection and staffing shortages.
In Italy, hundreds of deaths have been reported in residential homes in Bergamo in the north, while 83 elderly residents went without food at a home for two days in the south because staff had to go into quarantine.
“Grim” is an understatement.

Long term care residents go down a level of care if they catch this virus, they will be treated in the care home with IV and meds but not admitted to hospital, most of them who get infected will not survive. Excuse for this being they do not want to infect hospitals and it would be cruel to put them on ventilators.

My mother is in a nursing home in Ontario with a DNR order. If she gets this virus I would be appalled if she was taken to hospital or put on a ventilator. That would be cruel. She is 99 and has lived a good life until the last 10 years. It will not be a tragedy, unless others go without food or care because they are trying to save my Mom.

Who else is really pissed off at the number of Covid 19 infections in long-term care homes in Canada? Of all the institutions that should be aware of how viruses harm the elderly and those with pre-existing conditions (since most of those individuals are in long-term care homes), it should be care homes. Every year, on average, the seasonal flu kills around 7,500 Canadians, the large majority being the elderly and those with pre-existing conditions. You would think that care homes would have perfected implementing of standard processes to limit the transmission of viruses including Covid19 – you know like washing hands, limiting access to the facility from outsiders (yes family can bring in viruses) etc.
Staff should have the flu shot (not standard in hospitals/public care homes) and staff should be disciplined if they do not follow procedures to limit transmission (like washing hands/wearing gloves between working with clients) including being sent home without pay. But I think all would be surprised how lax care homes are in Canada about implementing procedures. They always point to the lack of funding and then politicians hand over more funding and NOTHING changes. How about for a change, supervisors/managers actually do their jobs and insist on staff following standard guidelines and then enforce the consequences if they don’t.

My 76 year old husband had his second ministroke March 10th. I pushed and pushed to get him out of the hospital as fast as possible because of COVID19. I had to shell out several hundred in medical equipment and convince a physiotherapist and occupational therapist to give approval to get him out the fourth day. The doctors were saying they could not release him unless physiological and OT approved. The staff were arguing with me because they said he needed a three week hospital stay and then off to rehab. I told them, no way! We are getting out of institutions ASAP because of the coronavirus. They pooh poohed our concerns. They were dead set against me taking him home right up until the day before I said we were leaving. Then a bunch of people in suits showed up and I overheard a lot of conversation about N95 and COVID19. Suddenly I had 100% cooperation getting my man out of there. The doctors supported my decision. The physiotherapist and OT both spent the entire afternoon with us making sure we were ready. The psychologist signed the papers without even talking to us. We’ve been at home since staying safe since and he’s recovered almost all his function under my care instead of in a hospital. The walker, bathroom bench, everything else I bought is now in storage. We’ve had two follow ups with his family doctor by telephone only to keep him safe. The latest talk is this is going on until July in Manitoba. Fine. In January/February we started preparing for this and we’re well stocked. We both know if he ends up in hospital needing a ventilator, he’s one of the expendables.

And who knows how much lower the total number of deaths from the corona virus would be if the Chinese government hadn’t lied about the true nature of it for the last 3 months.
The official Chinese line on the virus was full of lies, and those lies were incorporated in the early models of the flus progression in the United States and other countries, and guided early mitigation efforts. If western nations have known from the outset how dangerous the virus was they would have taken steps much earlier than they did and would be much better prepared today to handle the crisis as it entered the rapid growth phase.
Instead of of helping, the Chinese have raised a massive propaganda effort, claiming the US Army introduced the virus into Wuhan, and is solely responsible for the pandemic.
I wonder if the Chinese government also claim the US Army forced them to ship the defective test kits and medical supplies which China sent to Spain, Czechoslovakia and other countries to “help” them battle the virus?
As much as possible, maybe people should try to bring their loved ones home during such a crisis. There is a lot of criticism of the care homes in the comments, but most are in lock down, washing hands, etc. Wherever there are a lot of elderly, fragile people, deaths will happen with any kind of infectious disease. I don’t think complaints about Liberal, socialist, Democrats, etc are relevant here. This is first and foremost about a highly contagious virus and too many vulnerable old folks. At some point, there are too many people to be cared for adequately.
At some point we have to let more people get the disease so they can either die or recover and get back to work. With the economy fast disappearing people somewhere in this world are going to start starving, likely not in wealthy food exporters like Canada.
I agree with you. People need to get back to work. I understand that aspects of the system could be overwhelmed. This is a virus. It is part of nature. Sadly, people will die. We can do our best, but shutting down the economy for more than a couple of weeks is a big mistake. Many people are disappointed that Trump has backed off of open by Easter. The projected numbers are scary, but most people will not die from the virus. I do not want to see our society destroyed by this.

To lock down the old folks homes is so obvious, the fact that it didn’t happen must have been on purpose. The mayor of Toronto was upset kids were playing basketball, the Premier upset companies were gouging consumers for cloth wipes- meanwhile infection was spreading into the most vulnerable of places – where our elderly go to live out their dying days.
