Let’s forget the Canada of today and remember the Canada we all were
– the vast majority will experience a minor illness
– the young and very young are the least adversely affected.
– to protect the vulnerable (older people and those with respiratory conditions etc), herd immunity is required.
– they also want to reduce the load on hospitals. So spread out the length of the epidemic, i.e. flatten the curve. This means they are better able to treat those with Wuhan who are very ill.
There are a few pitfalls with this idea, and it might be incorrect, but I bring it to SDA readers attention.
That will really mess up the vegans who depend on a steady supply of fresh “sustainable” “ethical” veggies which don’t grow in Canada this time of year.
In Alberta, we know that “locavore” means beef, beans, bread, beer. With a shout-out to the greenhouses attached to various gas plant type operations who will provide lettuce, tomatoes, and herbs.
Somewhat anecdotal but I was at the local Rona buying paint earlier this evening… I got to talking with the guy behind the counter and he told me that employees of Coastal Health were in the store earlier in the day buying up paper products, wipes, towels and TP… apparently the local Hospital is being over run by the foreign born ( mainly middle eastern ) coming to Canada for the “free health care”… they get off a plane from the middle east and head straight to a Hospital… I drove by the local Hospital and the Emergency area does look overly busy… like I said this story is somewhat anecdotal but I’ve never seen the Hospital that busy ever. Are people who are already sick in another country jumping on a plane and heading to Turdholeland where there are no travel restrictions and no screening in an attempt to take advantage of the Liberals open borders policy and the “free health care” ? Most likely.
And why not, when, after they disembark, they get a card which guarantees them 20 years of top-of-the-line medical and dental care…. for free.
Gee, thanks, Prinz Dummkopf, for turning this country into the world’s dumping ground. Georgie, Barry, and Mutti Merkel must be proud of you.
Amid all the upheaval and impending catastrophes, I saw something truly important a few days ago.
I was back at my house in NE B. C. to do some more work on settling my father’s estate. Last year, I had a birch in my back yard taken down. The tree had a birdhouse, which was inhabited by a nesting family of sparrows, fastened to it. I waited until they had left before I arranged to have the work done.
I later hung up the birdhouse on a nearby spruce tree. While I was there during this last trip, I noticed some sparrows were looking at the house, peeking inside, and even checking out the “furnishings”. It would be nice if someone took up residence there this year.
That would be awesome
Also
Probably a distant family from the last tenants for they always return near where they were born
That’s what I thought.
Years ago, while I was growing up, we used to have a birdhouse by the kitchen. It was fun seeing a new brood each year. We often had the impression that the new set of parents already knew the place, so we figured that it was either the same ones returning from before or at least one of them had been raised there.
Meanwhile, all winged critters are welcome at my house. I’ve got a feeding station and several feeders in the back yard. This past trip, I saw chickadees perched on one of them, picking away at the seeds. Some of the contents spilled onto the ground while I was gone and both chickadees and sparrows came by to stuff themselves.
Chickadees are smart. Years ago our feeder was very busy and one chickadee tried and tried to get in but couldn’t. So he gave a warning call and all the other birds fled and in he went to feed.
They are the only birds to “store” food, too. My feeder has been Sparrow proofed and we get a family of Chickadees (among other native birds). Been nesting a couple of years in our birdhouse. They don’t fly away when I come out to the yard and will wait patiently while I reload the feeder. They generally wait less than an arm’s length away. They don’t seem to take any crap from bigger birds like Finches. They just pick a different feeding port.
I have lived in my current house for 35 years. I have a number of bird houses mounted around my garage all serviced with regularly attended sun-flower seed feeders. Every year there are no vacancies and often the occupants – all sparrows; they run the chicadees off – produce second broods. Here’s the thing! Those guys and gals know me – and they know there’s no danger. They will be right close by when I’m tending their feeders. Now, can I get them to come to hand? Not a chance! I’ve even let the feeders run out and then tried to bring them down. Nada! YET, the wife and I can go for a tramp along the Bow River or in Fish Creek park here in Calgary or out at Carseland/Wyndham and we can bring chicadees, both species of nuthatch and both species of woodpeckers to hand no problem. The chicadees appear as if by magic and will mob us along the trail. We can take pics!
Never have figured it out!
I built an owl house two years ago with all the dimensions I could find proper for an owl. Hung it about a hundred yards away from the house, opposite side of the prevailing winds on the tree, 16-18 ft off the ground… all the proper things I thought for an owl from my reading.
Last year, instead of owls, wood ducks moved in and nested. It’s the oddest thing to see these ducks high up in the oaks. I don’t think I’ve ever witnessed it before these. I can’t remember when they left last year but they just returned a couple days ago.
James
Neat to have tree ducks nesting in your back yard. Several species of ducks are tree nesters.
Wood ducks are uncommon where I live but not unheard of. I put up a nest box on the river for them a few years ago to try and encourage them if they show up. Still hoping.
B A, good story that brightens my day. It reminds me to fill up our bird feeders in our front yard today. My wife and I are working on fixing up two former bookcases, in the cellar, and uiung them for emergency staples we have bought.
You’re welcome.
After seeing the sparrows house-hunting, a lot of things came into their proper perspective.
Cool Story BA..!!
I’m with you, David on this… 6:40 Am and I’m smiling..!
You’re welcome.
And to add to things, I’ve noticed that some of the rabbits in my neighbourhood are starting to turn colour. The fur on the top of their backs is showing streaks of brown.
We`re getting a squirrel-proof bird feeder this year. Damned tree-rats are like socialists.
John Batchelor often made comments on his show about the squirrels in his back yard. He’s taken measures to keep them from his bird feeder and they figure out ways around them. He likened that to an arms race.
Good luck. Tried most of them. The only thing that works remotely well is home made baffles.
Or .177 calibre squirrel “food” administered at 496 fps.
hey BA, thats wonderful you did that.
for about 3 yrs now I make my own suet balls for a store bought feeder, hanging below a store bought seed dispenser.
lots of species have shown up, but naturally mostly sparrows and thieving squirrels.
I suspect by now the offspring of some are likewise frequenting the feeders.
I am very vigilant to fill them in cold weather.
I do something similar. Every Christmas, I go through the immediate neighbourhood and leave food for the critters. At certain places, I leave birdseed and I hang my suet concoctions from a spruce tree.
I don’t forget the local rabbits, either. I leave a handful of carrots for them in the same spot where I usually drop off my kitchen scraps. I remember one year in which they were watching me make my goody run and they couldn’t wait to start feasting.
Leaving your estate for animal care. There’s a thought…..
A rabbit is here everyday and last night some deer showed up. Missed seeing the deer– but they left evidence! They are all after the sunflower seeds that fall on the ground from the chicadee bird feeders. (special feeder– has tiny dispenser holes for hulled sunflower seeds)
There’s some barely visible, thin, foot long wire around the clear plastic tubular feeders. The chicadees aren’t afraid of it but the sparrows don’t like the wire so thay eat what falls on the ground. As a result, there’s less sparrows now but more woodpeckers and other sorts of birds. Happily, less is more, ‘cuz there’s less bird doo-doo on the outdoor seats!
Years ago, we used to have both pine and evening grosbeaks feeding at the house during the winter. Back then, the area where we lived was close to the edge of town. Now it’s in the middle of a larger residential area and, I guess, the grosbeaks went elsewhere.
Back then, it wasn’t uncommon for deer coming up from a creek valley north of town would come by. My father bought a large bag of alfalfa to feed them, but I haven’t seen any since I started going regularly to the house.
Even without the grosbeaks, I have quite a variety of flying beasties in my back yard. I have the aforementioned sparrows and chickadees but I also have magpies, blue jays, crows, and even some ravens. The trees in the back yard (many of which I helped plant many years ago) are tall enough that there’s room for everybody.
Willis Eschenbach over at Wattsupwiththat explains that “so far” the “Wuhan virus” total # of cases and death rates seem to all follow the mathematical Gompertz Curve (after Herculean public efforts) not an “exponential growth” curve. A case for cautious optimism.
He also explains why calling it Wuhan virus is no more racist than “Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever”, “Zika virus” (named after Ziika Forest of Uganda) or “Lyme disease” (Lyme , Connecticut).
Paul H
Thanks for the link. Willis usually has well thought out and informative posts.
Interesting that he calls out the CNN slime ball Jim Acosta who called it Wuhan corona virus two weeks ago, but now says Wuhan virus is racist.
Since the Chinese government, and the left in North America, are upset about “Wuhan” virus, that’s what I’ll call it.
Let’s make “Wuhan Virus” the top response for Google. Or at least try…
Blackie’s CBC is upset over panic buying. I’m sure it has nothing to do with Great Leader’s health minister going on television and telling everyone to stock up. Meanwhile Blackie’s CTV turned to Blackie’s mother for advice regarding the China virus. Because when we want advice on health matters, we turn to Margaret Trudeau. The Liberal Party media continues to spread Chinese propaganda that China has overcome the virus situation and that the U.S. is responsible for the virus outbreak in that country.
CTV getting advice from Maggie now that is hilarious.Maybe just getting a perspective from someone that is in a different world.Im thinking that’s where our crime minister is getting his ideas from
Maybe it’s a Liberal tradition. King got advice from the hereafter via a ouija board, didn’t he?
Understand she’s now in “self-isolation”. She’s in the susceptible demographic but – should she come down with the virus – bet she gets the treatment denied to younger seniors.
And now the Liberal Party’s Saturday Toronto Star. Because nothing is more important to Canadians than the views of Unifor journalists in downtown Toronto. Editorial cartoon that Ford is putting up billboards all over Ontario. Story that now is the time for Alberta to move away from resource development, and embrace green energy jobs. Story that Nazi groups are running rampant across Canada. Numerous stories that Trump is Hitler. Tony Burman explains that the good thing about the virus is that Trump will be defeated. Lots of stories that Blackie and the Liberal government are doing a wonderful job. Story that an energy project in Ontario should be stopped because indians have a veto over most of Ontario. Martin Cohn explains that Ford is incompetent handling the virus. Socialism is wonderful, Blackie is wonderful, Islam is wonderful, Indians are wonderful, Canadians are racist bastards.
Green energy jobs? We already do farming and the west (mostly Alberta) already fuels BC, AB, SK, MAN, ONT and 40% of QUE’s hydrocarbon products. Your propane comes from us. All the way to Kaybec. We do a good chunk of WASH state, too.
We can just shut it all in, if you’d like. Freeze in the dark, so to speak. How many electric cars, trucks, trains run down your way? SFA from what I gather. And how does Sock Buoy fly out to the west coast to surf…electric aircraft? Frankly, I’d just love to play “let’s shut it all down”.
Any takers?
The Liberal Party’s iPolitics website has a story titled, Its Time Alberta Got Over Its Oil Addiction.
Yea…one could say the same thing about Quebec and their Oil Addiction…or rather their Addiction to the Millions of GRAFT Dollars they squeeze from their Current suppliers.
Hypocrisy Writ large or what eh..? sorta Like Lotus Land ECO-Wankers bitching about emissions when they supply Billions of tons of Coal to China & say nary a peep about Alaskan ULCC’s carrying 550,000 bbls of Alaskan oil daily down their left coast into Juan de Fuca St.
But it’s ALBERTA OIL …yea right.
They Can All FK right off.
WE MUST LEAVE….
I thought close proximity to someone who tested positive (da-daa shudder, oooh scary) was a prime indicator for testing. Sophie has the lurgie and Boy Wonder isn’t tested? What does this say of their marriage? 🙂
All the pictures they show of them together he is beardless.
I think the worry is that if his results are negative, he might have to go back to work.
Why should Justin get tested? He has no symptoms.
If he was tested there are two results: he has it or he doesn’t
If he has it – 14 days quarantine while he recovers.
If he doesn’t have it then 14 days quarantine because he might have caught it. The incubation period, before symptoms present, is supposedly 5 to 14 days.
So a test at this time yields no actionable new information. Thus it would be a waste of time, money, and resources.
The test would indicate if he does NOT have it. If he does not, no need for quaranteen. The actual symptoms won’t appear if he does not have it.
He can still catch it from his wife. As long as they are in the same house he should self quarantine.
Understand he is at Rideau Cottage with the offsprings while she is up at Harrington Lake. Must be nice to have two residences (and at taxpayer expense, no less) in which to self-isolate. Many seniors would be hard put to have two bedrooms for same (the second bedroom being a study with – at best – a hide-a-bed), let alone the luxury of separate bathrooms as is recommended by the experts.
Blackie must be suffering from the DT’s by now because he has no flights on his horizon, no glad-handing, no selfies, no gay parades, just his little area at Rideau Cottage.
His ego needs feeding. Will lawn press conferences be enough?
Is he going to sneak somebody in the backdoor for some shenanigans to while away the time?
That`s why he`s gone into hiding … er … isolation.
A reliable source told me that the best cure for the bug is a Friday night prayer at a local mosque.
Sky News Australia host, Rita Panahi, told her audience this week “No matter how hard the Democrats and their allies in the media try, Biden’s cognitive issues can no longer be ignored… There is simply too much footage of these… Charlie Sheen levels of confusion to gaslight the American public. Biden has appeared frail, perplexed and just odd on too many public occasions. So much so that his campaign workers have been accused of elder abuse. “

Worse than corona
Respectfully, Corona is an addition not an either or and for which there is no herd immunity.
No I`m saying that many people will think they have a cold or the `flu rather than the virus, as the symptoms in most cases are similar, apperently.
My understanding is that adding a lime relieves the symptoms.

I like the first comment to that article:
“I give JT the respect he gives to Alberta. I think sweet FA sums it up.”
I bet if you did a Venn diagram of the shocked Canadians and the ones who are gleefully hoping Trump dies from it, you would see a single circle.
Well, my reply to that would be “Canadians are Stupid”. Again, which ones?

3. 2020 – Trudeau to pass legislation recognizing a United Nations declaration on Indigenous rights which “would give Indigenous groups across Canada a veto over any infrastructure projects crossing their territories”.

Connect the dots? But he wouldn’t kill the project he spent billions to buy, you say? It wasn’t his money…
Why are walls good for Juthtin Turdhole to hide behind, but borders are “racist”, or something, and restricting flights from infected areas of the world wouldn’t make any difference or whatever … so, come on in everybody ! Bring that disease over here, juthtin is safely hidden away and who gives a shit about everybody else, am I right ? https://videos.whatfinger.com/2020/03/14/betrayed-by-canada-time-for-us-to-close-all-borders-including-with-canada-they-import-infested-from-china-freely-not-good/
Willis Eschenbach over at Wattsupwiththat explains that “so far” the “Wuhan virus” total # of cases and death rates seem to all follow the mathematical Gompertz Curve (after Herculean public efforts) not an “exponential growth” curve. A case for cautious optimism.
https://wattsupwiththat.com/2020/03/13/the-math-of-epidemics/
He also explains why calling it Wuhan virus is no more racist than “Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever”, “Zika virus” (named after Ziika Forest of Uganda) or “Lyme disease” (Lyme , Connecticut).

Probably a fair assessment of driving an EV in the city compared to the highway.

Here is a nice summary of Joe Biden,
Sky News Australia host, Rita Panahi, told her audience this week “No matter how hard the Democrats and their allies in the media try, Biden’s cognitive issues can no longer be ignored… There is simply too much footage of these… Charlie Sheen levels of confusion to gaslight the American public. Biden has appeared frail, perplexed and just odd on too many public occasions. So much so that his campaign workers have been accused of elder abuse. “

Worth watching the video midway down the link page. There are a lot of Bidengaffs. Wonder if I can trademark Bidengaffs?
