It’s not just about resources, equalization, and carbon taxes. We’d also shed ourselves of crap like this;
The Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities says it is “appalled” by Health Canada’s decision to move forward with a ban on the use of the deadly pesticide strychnine to kill gophers.
Health Canada says an evaluation of scientific information confirms there are risks to other animals, including species at risk, for products registered to control Richardson’s ground squirrels.
In 2018, Health Canada cited concerns about animals including the swift fox and the burrowing owl in its proposal. Gophers, which burrow underground, can damage crops and their burrows can injure livestock. Health Canada says it made the decision after reviewing comments from agriculture groups, governments, environmental groups and members of the general public.
SARM president Ray Orb said the decision is based on “anecdotal assumptions, not recent research.” According to SARM, a 2019 study showed that “despite a large number of non-target species present, death from strychnine was limited to only four deer mice.”
Orb said SARM “will take all steps needed to have the decision overturned or at minimum have our producers compensated for any crop damage due to gophers.”
Plus, the Department of Oceans and Fisheries plus the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change plus…

… and Health Canada has what exactly to do with species at risk?
They say the current locust infestation in east Africa is caused by NGO’s giving free stuff only to farmers who agree to give up pesticides.
Some animals are more equal than others.
There is only one animal they have no concern for, the soon to be endangered Two Legged Western Canadian.
I have been screaming about the damage beavers do to warm and fuzzy Ontario. It was not enough, apparently, and another province has to be made hostage to rodents. What is it in rodents that the liberal tree huggers love so much? DNA similarity?
Tararam Bam Bam: We could trap them and take them to cities in ONT maybe Trudope’s Harrington Lake home he and family need some pets for their acreage!!
Ontario is composed of mostly rats these days.
Harrington Lake is in K-bec.
Do we really need a federal government?
Lorenzo: NO we don’t need the Fed’s the Province’s could do all the same thing. It sure would save a lot of money if we did get rid of the Fed’s…run your own program’s for each individual Province.
Agreed!!!
Yeah, some municipalities banned herbicides. Everyone still sprays.
Another day, another Liberal government virtue signaling overreach regulation
How about Health Canada put a halt to Trudeau’s welcome wagon approach to infected individuals coming into the Country from infected hot spots like China & Iran. This Liberal government is knowingly and recklessly working to kill off huge swaths of the population.
With everything else going on in the Country and around the world, this is stupidity at its worst.
Until the next time Trudeau opens his yap.
Just ignore them. In fact, Ottawa should be routinely ignored.
Save the sacred gopher! Blockade railway tracks!
Ontario John: We could capture the gophers and tie them to the tracks…do you think it would work!!!!
Well they sure don’t want farmer’s using guns to kill them either.
Maybe its the beef farmer they want dead because they all have shares in Beyond Meat.
Or is it that a malnourished populace is even easier to subjugate?
Buddy: We could as Canadians end up eating them just like the squirrels, gophers are probably very tasty!! As TruDope is trying to destroy Canada this might be our only option!!
Had two friends who did exactly that, for fun.
They snared the little buggers.
Perhaps we could go back to the nickel a tail bounty.
Back in the day when there was a bounty on gopher tails, my uncles earned their pocket money by trapping the little critters. Then they realized that tail-less gophers will still produce more tailed ones and adjusted their methods accordingly.
I would say live-trap a couple hundred breeding pairs and turn them lose on EVERY golf course close to where your ‘elites’ live. see how long that rule lasts when their 18 hole golf courses turn into 1800 hole golf courses.
John Post: Love your idea!!
have you not learned that golf courses are exempt from such regulations….
JP: Damned good idea! If there was a “thumbs up” function at SDA, you’d get a hell of a lot of ’em for that comment!
One of the most enjoyable activities we did as kids in Manitoba was gopher shooting. Everyone I knew was a damned good shot from practicing on gophers with the old iron sight single shot Cooey.
Kate:
The point at which anyone would be bothered telling the rest of Canada (aka the MTV) why the west wants out is moot. They have proven beyond a doubt that they not only don’t care, they go the extra step of adding insult.
It’s now on the self appointed aristocracy to tell you why you want to stay.
But don’t waste your time, they don’t think the west will ever do anything about it.
They can’t wrap their little minds around why there are people living north of Steeles Ave., west of Hamilton, or east of Scarborough.
Cut them off from everything, especially whine, food and fuel. Couldn’t happen to a better bunch of ignorant, posturing, mealy mouthed, virtue signalling, twats. Stick your Raptors up your antrims sideways. Same goes for the equivalent twats in the Lower Mainland, BC and especially Kaybec.
I know for a fact that I’m not the only one to think this way. Got that Kenny?
#WEXIT!
Doing a little forensic research here and noticed a strong similarity between the Richardson Ground Squirrel and a small dead animal on the Internet.
If poisoning ground squirrels is a danger to at risk species…
Then why are we still building wind power.
If we had a premier who cared about Saskatchewan or anyone living here in any way, this would be a simple nor withstanding clause fix.
Premier Moe is a Liberal in a green jacket. Standing up for Saskatchewan doesn’t happen.
Gophers? I was a gopher-meister when I was a kid. We had 30 or 40 leg hold traps. Pop one in each hole. If you’ve got more than 40 holes, move them around. In a week you run out of gophers. Leg hold traps likely aren’t legal any more. Nothing that actually works is legal any more.
UFA has leg hold traps, but not sure if they’re for squirrels
Use #0 leg hold traps. A few years ago I cleaned out the whole clan of gophers (70) that were destroying a Canola crop.
scar: In the 50’s you could shoot them and take the tail in and get money a great way to help a family in need!!!!
We had an invasion in our yard when we built and the “infrastructure” was being upgraded. For a couple of years. They ran from the earth movers to my backyard. Traps, lots of traps. Lost count of the dead and maimed. No mercy. They invaded from City property onto mine. F/U City of Calgary. I used to routinely “fumigate” the myriad of tunnels excavated under my lawn and bushes. Ah, the smell of sulfur in the morning, aided by a shop vac to move the stuff underground. I won.
Later, a resident Merlin took care of the Sparrows and Voles. I got pics of him/her munching away. Don’t need no steenkin’ traps now. Magpies pick over the remains.
When I first came to Alberta there was billions. Out on the bald arse prairies, I just ran ’em over with my truck. Pop, poppity, pop to the whine of Patsy Kline. Then I found out that they were cannibals, too. Ran over even more. They were tough to hit on pavement without causing accidents, but seen a few pickups swerve to get any in range on the highways. Quick little buggers, seen ’em pop out between front and rear tires of cars at 60 mph, too. Where I came from, Montreal at the time, all we had were skunks. Lots of skunks. You avoided them like a plague.
The Iron Rule of Bureaucracy Strikes again.
The under employed useless and clueless, flounder about seeking productive citizens they can f**k with.
Although it does suggest a way to accelerate Independence.
Why don’t we treat the Oil Sands as what they are,a huge environmental mess and (potential)hazard.
And approach it as a federal responsibility that must be cleaned up.
Working in the federal manner,we can drive the cost of removing the oil from the sand to insane levels and insist the taxpayer pay..cause we are saving the environment.
This is how the feds have operated on every mine remediation project they control,so they can hardly resist.
Hell declare ourselves Liberal Friends, with 15% of gross costs set aside for our patrons and it will just be business as usual in the Kleptocracy of Canada.
And then to top it all off,we can under contract to the feds..dispose of the “Waste Products” in a safe manner.
Getting paid from both ends.
Just like the PCB contaminated oil fiasco in Quebec.
Or we can put the boots to our parasitic overlords and copy Alaska’s royalty scheme while shrinking government to less than 10% of our costs.
JR, I’ve been saying for years, that the sands were being cleaned, and the eco-terrorists should support such projects.
Sigh, nobody listens to me anyway either!
“The Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities says it is “appalled”…”
Are they only speaking up now? Is this their first “appalled”?
Or are they like like their brave counterparts at the Rural Ontario Municipal Association, who have spent the last fifteen years kissing the arses of federal and provincial ministers whose ministries have been strangling Ontario’s rural residents with environmental legislation?
jamie, yah , just try getting a building permit:-)))
I think the Provinces need to start standing up for their RIGHT’s and tell the Federal Dept to keep their noses out of Provincial Politics. The Federal gov’t is getting to BIG for it’s Pants..No new Regulations unless the Provinces vote on it!!
Health Canada says it made the decision after reviewing comments from agriculture groups, governments, environmental groups and members of the general public.
Here, I’ll fix this part:
Health Canada says it made the decision after reviewing comments from environmental activists.
Today the Dow fell .98%, and the TSE Composite fell 2.29%, more than 3 times as much.
Every time investors read stuff like the shit you report on in this post and all of your many posts on the ongoing destruction of our economy by our own governments, some percentage of those investors go online and dump Canadian investments and use the proceeds to buy American ones. A new worldwide investment motto. Investing is as easy as “ABC” – Anyplace But Canada.
Canadian bank stocks, the mainstay of every pension fund in this country, are falling through the floor. Everyone’s pensions are now absolutely in danger.
Ontario and Quebec, you own this mess, you voted Liberal.
This is the intentionally orchestrated destruction of Canada by the commy left.
Other countries followed down the dame path in the past, with catastrophic results.
Every one ended in the slaughter of tens of millions, wholesale destruction of wealth, famine, epidemics of infectious diseases, and stagnation.
The only mistake that good people make is not killing bad people.
I contend that this is a Christian thing. Christianity blinds you. Reject God for your internal god, and open your blinds.
The Christian bible still contains passages that legalize slavery. Where do you draw the line in your souls? Do you pick and choose which passages to follow, and which to ignore? This is called being two-faced. Straighten up, reject God, throw away the bible, and do what is right.
I contend that not driving away muslims is a Christian thing! Of course, you believe that you worship the same God. Congratulations!
One day does not a market make. Here are the rough true numbers
Canada down YTD: 5.5%
USA down YTD: 8.7%
INTL down YTD: 11.8%
Otherwise, carry on.
Remember the “crash” in ’87? Just a few more “crashes” like today and I’m set to buy….USA. The only country that shuts their borders, unlike “Not Americans” up here. That will all change when the Trumpsky shuts the USA border to Kanuckistanians and K-stans of convenience, ’cause open borders like ours are flooded with sick Iranians and fleeing Chinks. So, I guess I’m “racist”. Yeah, I’ll be an alive racist when all’s said and done. Govern yourselves accordingly.
Fred, well except for those out west who supported making that asshole andy head of the conservatives
Smart investors have dumped Canadian resource companies a long time ago already.
The muppets are just starting to catch up.
Speaking of vermin, Post Millennial website reports that Muhammad Blackie has appointed Omar Khadr’s lawyer a judge in Alberta. Praise Allah!
After hearing John report on the judge My blood pressure is about 900 over what the hell number Trudeau has declared outright war on the west Govern yourselves accordingly Gentlemen
Time to stock up on 22lr!
Also…be nice to see Alberta and Sask derestrict ar15s for some 223 practice on varmints. Tell the feds to pound sand.
Whether we separate or not it’s time to get rid of any federal say in our provinces.
When an RCMP horse catches a hoof in a gopher hole while in partial gallop, will the RCMP block the viewers from seeing what happens next?
“Gophers, which burrow underground, can damage crops and their burrows can injure livestock.”
And when you have gophers, you then get badgers and the holes get a lot bigger.
A bit unfair. Scheer was never as big an asshole as Trudeau, and he won more of the popular vote. I am not a big fan of Scheer, but his loss in the last election was the result of various factors, including media attacks solely because he is a conservative.
Bull!! He lost himself, with the help of his caucus friends, ’cause he doesn’t have the killer instinct. Neither do they. Still playing by Joke Lark Rules. Promise what the libs did, ’cause that always works.
Just collect your paychecks and pensions. It’s the only way.
#WEXIT
A cursory glance at the posts didn’t reveal any comments on “renewable energy”, so here goes.
Health Canada (whatever that is) has decided that strychnine puts certain animals “at risk.” Strychnine has been used as rat poison for at least a century without apparent harm to domestic animals. How about Health Canada deciding to ban windmills and solar panels have been proven to kill thousands of flying animals per site, indiscriminate of whether they are “protected” or not.
We actually have a “Rat Patrol” https://www.alberta.ca/albertas-rat-control-program.aspx
I personally believe that the cause of any exploding gopher population is the lack of natural enemies. It works on the same principle as an exploding number of Liberals. Not enough conservative hawks to keep the numbers balanced. . Or better yet, too many doves and not enough hawks.
Are farmers still using roundup as a desiccant?
Just asking.
For a friend.
Gophers are a reservoir for Yersinia pestis, are they not?
“agriculture groups, governments, environmental groups and members of the general public.”
uhuh.
guess which 2 of these groups has NO fcuking business weighing in on the issue.
