On Friday afternoon, the Senate voted against compelling more witnesses and documents in the impeachment trial of President Donald Trump. The final vote was 49-51.

The vote went as expected, with every Democrat voting for more witnesses and documents and every Republican voting against extending the trial, with the exceptions of Sens. Susan Collins (R-Maine) and Mitt Romney (R-Utah).

The hashtags are in full meltdown.

Meanwhile, this just in from the Department of Unintended Consequences: Real Clear Politics has Biden down in Iowa nearly 4 points to Bernie, whom the Democrat establishment may well hate more than Trump.

    1. Romney is part of the RINO death rattle, holding out for his personal dislike of Trump, who showed him how to properly run.
      He should be removed from the party rolls, along with cowardly Colllins. Both must face primaries to kick them off GOP ballots.
      If at all possible, they should be impeached, recalled or otherwise removed from office at any legal opportunity.
      They belong in the same part of hell as Vindman and his twin traitor brother.

The House of Congress is charged with doing the investigation on impeachment, so you can’t come along and say you didn’t have a chance to call all the witnesses; when you had all the time in the world to marshal ALL YOUR EVIDENCE in Congress. But “Congressional leaders” didn’t want to do that because that would have slowed the impeachment gambit, as they would have had court cases on ‘executive privilege’ to be litigated which would have taken considerable months. Of course that didn’t fit their re-election plans, because then they could say the President was “impeached”; FOREVER no less according to Speaker Pelosified.

      The “prosecutors” in Congress fudged it hoping they could tell the Senators (Jury) how to do their job, and the Senate demurred.

      “Never in Senate history has this body paused an impeachment trial to pursue additional witnesses with unresolved questions of executive privilege that would require protracted litigation,” the Senate majority leader continued. “We have no interest in establishing such a new precedent, particularly for individuals whom the House expressly chose not to pursue.”

      Thus impeachment becomes just another political tool for warfare on the hustings…

      1. I don’t understand why the Dims didn’t slow walk the impeachment. Wouldn’t the timing have been better to wrap it up closer to the election? It feels like there’s so much under the surface with the Dims. Nothing they attempt stands up to the light of day.

        1. Because to do that would mean they would be stuck in DC when they want to be out campaigning.
          If they are not out campaigning it’s easier for them to lose their candidacy by someone replacing them through a primary vote.

    So far the better guys won.
    There should be tons of scorn and ridicule heaped on the complete failure of a candidate for POTUS some time ago.
    The guy has not accepted that he is not presidential material. He is one of the swamp. Trump is a whole different kind of animal.
    Romney can’t even bring himself to tell Trump to go and do something to himself.

  17. Welcome to the US. The land where the president is king and free to abuse power for personal benefit.

    The Republicans have just approved of using the IRS to target right leaning organizations and using the FBI to investigate opponents.

    It is rather surprising given their rhetoric but I guess they decided it was more important to let Trump get away with abusing his power than worry about what happens when Democrats start to use the powers that the Republicans just approved.

    A sad day for the average citizen of the US.

      1. Yes, I am aware of the cult like nature of partisan hacks on both sides of aisle. The problem is that a lot of people have decided to abandon ethical standards in the name of partisanship and that will hurt everyone in the long run.

        It is not unlike most socialist policies which are usually very popular because who does not like free stuff but they invariably fail in the long run. But at least socialists policies can be reversed. Once ethical standards are gone you will never get them back.

        As I said, the republicans basically told the dems that any kind of corruption is fine and they should not bother pretending to do this right. Abusing power in the name of keeping power is perfectly acceptable now.

        Truly a sad day for the average US citizen even if many are too shorted sighted to realize it.

          Look, A-Hole, …the business of calling and questioning witnesses was the Dems job to do when preparing the articles of Impeachment in the House of Representatives. It is NOT the Senate’s place to call witnesses that the House did not call nor question.

          The Senate Republicans DID do it Right. You’re just IGNORANT of the proper procedures and protocols.
          The Senate’s time is being wasted with this. The U.S. Senate has important things to do.
          The questioning of witnesses NOT CALLED by the House was defeated 52-48.
          It states in the U.S. Constitution that it takes 60-40 to impeach.

      1. You have to separate the policies from the man. Trump has done many good things and, more importantly, he stopped the dems from implementing some really crazy stuff. But that does not make him a “great” president. He is a self serving bastard with no concept of ethics. Inventing crazy conspiracies about the Clintons does not make Trump’s ethical failings go away.           1. Democrats have never publicly argued that abusing power is perfectly acceptable which put limits on their depredations. Do not assume you understand the implications of this declaration.
