Via email,
Just wanted you to know that I received my gas bill today (first sizeable bill this winter from Enbridge/formerly Union Gas), wherein I have been charged the 13% H.S.T. (Ontario) on the Federal Carbon Tax.
Call me crazy, as you like, but that appears to me to be a tax on tax. Hell, I thought Doug Ford was going to do away with this kind of thing, which, as it happens, needs to happen, now!
It’s nothing but a grab, and the quicker everybody in Ontario understands this insanity, the sooner we’ll have a new country!

Well doesn’t this fool realize they get a rebate check from Trudelles? Tax on a tax? Yes but think of the children!
Won’t everyone be delighted to see that they will have to claim the rebate as income on their 2019 return
By the time ANYTHING gets to end-user in Canada, you are getting a product or service where 90% of the total cost of it is taxation from the start to finish … one tax after another … That happened incrementally over many years.
The full view of this stupidity is the recent collapse of the burgeoning marijuana industry that was loaded so top heavy with taxation and control that nobody wanted to pay the price.
Taxing a tax is indeed going too far.
Problem is, governments need the money. All those wonderful handouts that they promised in order to buy your vote cost money. Lots of money. Much more money than they have coming in.
So they borrow in your name. And borrow, and borrow, and borrow….see where this is going?
A responsible government will do what it can to eliminate the deficit. But they have only one source for money other than borrowing, and that’s you. So they’ll cut wasteful spending as much as they can, but the rest must come from taxes.
Of course, it’s the irresponsible government that imposes carbon taxes in the first place, taxes that hurt the economy and thus reduce government income, so when they run out of things to tax, it’s not surprising that they’ll start taxing taxes.
Any fool with an IQ above room temperature knew the carbon tax would be taxed. They voted for this, 65% of voters said tax me I’m stupid, 98.5% if you believe Andy2% is trustworthy.
Greg, the gimmie, gimmie, gimmie crowd will not catch on until the country is bankrupt and they are eating out of dumpsters. When that happens they will double down and completely destroy what little wealth is left in Canada. Canada holds little promise for anyone other than a welfare immigrant. All government needs to be cut by 50% and all socialists prohibited from ever holding office. It looks like we will only gain our freedom back by restricting those who would suck the country dry.
Whatever nanny stater. 50% cut? Try 99.95% cut to government.
Get rid of unions.
Get rid of pensions.
Get rid of salaries; you eat in the government cafeteria, you live in the govt barracks, you wear the govt uniform.
Sell off all the limestone buildings; govt is run out of quonsets and cubicles.
Get rid of the vote; while in govt, you have no say, you do what you are told.
Run it like jury duty.
This career civil servant crap didn’t work, look where it got us.
This career politician crap, never did attract the best and brightest.
Salaries, pensions, appear to have actually had the opposite effect; the worst and most criminal.
Time to burn it all down.
– So what else is new? The “law” says GST and PST (or whatever they call it this week) are to be charged separately on the original purchase price – and all the Provinces from Quebec east charge the one, and then calculate the other based-on the total of original purchase price PLUS the one. They always have. “Hey that’s illegal!” – “Yeah, so what?”
And everybody pays income tax, right? Well, for those of us who are salaried, income tax is ripped out of our hides at source – it’s “our money” but we never see it, it goes straight into Revenue Cannibal coffers. Yet at year’s-end we’re taxed on the total – including that great big chunk that we paid-out already, and that Sockpuppet has been spending since the beginning of the tax year. That’s definitely taxing the tax, no?
Think its bad now, wait until Blackie and his buddies in the NDP and Bloc start their global warming scam efforts this year.
OJ, there is only one direction for Canada and that is down. Canadians as a majority are not intelligent enough to see this.
Don’t forget, the carbon tax is in its infancy. Wait till the little beggar is 3,4,5 times bigger. But it will get worse. Compound interest, even in Twilight Zone Devalued Money World, doesn’t lie and debt needs to be paid.
We should change the name of the country to Bendover.
A couple of my old army buddies retired to Panama. I may have to look at real estate there.
I worked this out just recently. Simply for gas and gas plus HST I am paying over $220/year (I forget the exact number).
It beggars belief that politicians would stoop to taxing energy; they’ll tax food next.
The carbon tax is on food as well. All food is produced or moved by carbon or uses carbon somewhere in the process. The carbon tax is a super gst. It is an accelerant tax. All politicians lie, and all the parties and politicians In Canada are COMMUNISTS
Doug Ford is a “progressive conservative”. He’s like Jason Kenney, soft centrists. As in Pandy Scheer too. Voters got shafted in past 10 years when selecting CINOs during elections… Read the CPC platform; sounds very LPC and very globalist.
There is only one real doctrinally conservative politician left in leftie Canada and he is Maxime Bernier and he’s right of center, not center.
I don’t think Ford has any say in this. Once the taxes were harmonized, it became the feds decision only. The old pst was not charged on services, McGuinty got a big windfall in taxes with harmonization, but still managed to wreck the budgets.
Let’s not kid ourselves. In the world of computers we can calculate a carbon tax based on the pre-tax amount with no more difficulty than the amount after HST is added. This is a tax grab.
And let us not forget the bail-in clause for the banks, should there be a depression and a run on those institutions. Should the banks need money, they will simply take it out of your accounts and replace your wealth with stocks in, wait for it, the banks, that are on the decline (yes, it is just that stupid). And all with the permission and blessing of the federal government. Only in Canada you say? Pity.
Who is this Maxime Bernier you speak of, Ray? 98% of voters chose more of the same by casting their ballots for one of the four socialist/communist parties. Only 1.6% voted for Bernier. He does not have a snowball’s chance. The socialist/communist parties will not allow it! The media party is aligned with socialists and keep a cone of silence over Bernier. If his name is mentioned it is only when he is being slagged for some politically correct slight based on some insignificant myth.
The proselytizing sector is aligned with the left and the their propagandists in the media. Our young are indoctrinated by carefully selected progressive teachers in our state sponsored centres we euphemistically call schools. The graduates of the propaganda arm of the govt are unwilling to break free of myths they have been taught.
Bernier advocates for self reliance and wealth creation. Voters refer relying on govt and stealing the wealth of the productive members of society. Killing the goose that lays the golden eggs seems to be their goal.
We need a thumbs-up button for that comment, Skweeker. You must NOT be a tweaker.
What did you think was going to happen? Did you think the 12,000,000 employees of the Ontario government were going to take a pay cut to pay off all the debt incurred under Rae, Mcguinty, Wynne, …. ? Did you think any of the 34,000 programs run by the 12,000,000 employee strong Ontario government and funded by you, were going to be cut back in some way?
You are the people who keep voting “don’t cut essential services”. So, drop your pants, grab your ankles, and stop complaining. You exist to serve the government, so if you want to go to heaven in the afterlife, PAY UP.
Kevin, just do a search on federal government depts, and then one on provincial government depts, then do a search on your local city government, the results should scare the hell out of any one who actually pays taxes from a for profit enterprise.
Then have a look at the Federation of Canadian Municipalities and what they are up too. People need to force your local government to get out of the FCM. Which is using Municipal tax dollars for things like Foreign Aid. And UN Agenda programs. You have the Federal Government overlapping into Provincial and Municipal jurisdiction. And Municipal governments doing Federal programs. You need a strong Provincial Premier who will adhere to the BNA jurisdiction and force the issues. Kick the Feds out of Provincial jurisdiction and exert control over the Municipal governments and follow the damn LAW. There is only one taxpayer and he is being raped by Governments. Rebel raise hell, get a back bone. Get rid of government programs. Canadians are controlled by over 500,000 PAGES of rules, laws ad regulations. That is a stack of paper over 14 stories high. All shuffled by union scale government employees making at least 1/3 more in pay and benefits than the average Canadian. Government is the problem. You could fire 50% of them and never notice.
How stupid are canadians? Stupid enough to vote themselves into slavery it appears.
Enjoy the decline. 🙂
The only problem is they are fitting me up for chains first. They WILL come for you, all in good time. But make no mistake, they WILL come for you, it’s just a matter of time.
johnboy if you have been at this site long enough you will know that I have been berating my fellow citizens for their level of stupid for a long time now. The decline will continue. I weep for my grand children, maybe they will be so indoctrinated they will not feel any pain.
Toronto: old Mohawk word meaning “choke me harder”.
Way behind the times folks. Or forgetful. Our previous provincial government had a special levy on the electric bill to ‘pay down the debt’ from Ontario Hydro. Taxes were applied to that as well. And the money was collected after the debt amount was reached if I remember correctly.
This isn’t an Ont tax. It’s calculated based on Federal GST Act rules. So while ONT gets some of the tax, they don’t determine how it’s calculated. That’s all Turdeau.
You’re correct. We don’t have the HST here.
‘A place to tax, a place to ‘hoe’ we’ll call this land Ontario.’
Burgess are you saying soon everyone in Ontario will have a mattress strapped o their back. A Place to HO. They will tax that to.
In theory, taxing that should balance the budget overnight, so to speak.
Canadians are a special breed of sheep. I remember when the Toronto Blue Jays had to have the Sky Dome. Every greasy assed politician In Ontario was up in arms. WE HAVE TO HAVE THE SKYDOME. Well they finally got it built for 600M tax dollars. A few years back it was sold to a private buyer for 50M. What happened to all the rest of that stolen money. When PET built PetroCan. He put on a 10 cent a liter special tax to pay for PetroCan. Supposed to be removed when PetroCan was paid for, that tax is still there today. PetroCan was sold off how many years ago. Kenney said no Carbon Tax In Alberta in January The Kenney Tax kicks in. They are all lying low life greasy assed POLLITICIANS…Until Canadians have the balls it will never change. Canadians pay more in taxes to their governments than they are allowed to take home to provide the necessities of life for their families. How gutless is that? Take from your own families mouth to feed some fat assed government employee. And then chant. “I AM CANADIAN” Pathetic gutless sheep. This is a quote I read somewhere. “Canada is at that Awkward Stage, too late to work within the system too soon to shoot the bastard’s” Claire Wolfe…
There is no such thing as a Conservative Politician In Canada. It is a myth. They are all COMMUNISTS. Scheer supports and approves everything the Liberals do. They are all the same. Canada is long over due for a good old fashioned revolution.
“When government fears the people, there is liberty. When the people fear the government, there is tyranny.” Thomas Jefferson.
There is no such thing as a Conservative Politician In Canada. It is a myth. They are all COMMUNISTS.
I have been saying this for many MANY years.
Some will sound semi-demi conservative on the campaign trail but this mirage evaporates late on election night.
This is why it’s eye-roll all the way this end when I hear the deluded SDA folks excoriating Harper for not doing the impossible like, for example, shutting down the CBC.
And oh, Wexiteers are even more deluded.
Farm diesel has the carbon tax baked into the price….plus a .04 cent excise tax per litre…all multiplied by the 13% HST here in Ontariowe. Tax on tax on tax.
Ain’t Kleptocracy grand?
Speaking of the “stupid party”, Scheer has announced that he is resigning for apparently looting the party treasury.
https://nationalpost.com/news/andrew-scheer-resigns-as-conservative-leader
Too bad they locked up the guy with the bucket of shit..Who will be the next Commissar to lead The CanCommunist Party.
“Give us the money or the Earth gets it!”
Back in mid-2008, the then presumably “free-market-friendly, business-friendly” government of BC Liberal Gordon Campbell published a document called “Climate Action Plan”.
In it was the imposition of a carbon tax. When that carbon tax was implemented then, it was a 50% tax on domestic natural gas USAGE.
Remember this is a tax on USAGE, not on cost. The BC government is charging their domestic natural gas users for USING natural gas. That way they don’t have to be dependent upon upon the collapsing price of natural gas, the collapse of which started, interestingly, in 2008.
Today, that carbon tax is 128% of domestic natural gas usage AND GST is applied to that tax. It will continue to rise. It could be as much as 200%.
So, Ontario, it doesn’t matter who’s in office. Governments have found a cash cow in the Climate Change Ideology and they will milk it for all it’s worth.
All in the name of saving the Earth.
The carbon tax is a SUPER GST. Like an accelerant at a house fire. It is on everything that moves, needs to keep warm or eat food. Even the cloths on your back have carbon tax embedded. Need to keep warm this winter find your local legislature and yah……..
Watcher, INHALE EXHALE, every breath you take is taxed.
There is nothing to stop the Ontario government from rebating the provincial portion of the HST on natural gas bills to retail customers. They do it now on residential electricity bills. This practice was introduced by the Wynne government in response to the disaster of electricity prices caused by Liberal policy. It has been carried on by the Ford administration.
Which brings me to the important point: Liberal mucking about with electricity prices and market operation has been a disaster for Ontario, just as Liberal mucking about with fossil fuel prices has been a disaster over the past 45 years for the whole country.
The Liberal debacle on electricity in Ontario will add up to $135 billion to the Province’s debt (concurrent finding of the provincial auditor general and the Financial Accountability Office; not my number) due to embedded green energy contract costs above market prices. This is Ontario Hydro’s stranded debt crisis/debt retirement charge all over again.
The reality of all these situations is that the public always pays more for Liberal schemes and receives nothing in return. What value do I derive from the Federal Carbon Charge, or the HST on top of it? What does my paying the attendant sums do to stop China, India and other emergent economies from pushing carbon into the air? Is carbon even a factor in climate change? Is there really any anthropogenic global warming?
This scheme is just another “wealth grab and redistribution” scheme of the political left, and it will end in the same kind of disaster as other Liberal energy policies. It seems to me that whoever the new Conservative leader is really ought to hammer this point home to Ontario voters, with appropriate references to historical examples.
At the very least, removing the provincial portion of the HST on Federal Carbon Charges would show that the Ontario Tories are consistent in their approach to the problem.
