Laurel Hubbard won two gold medals and a silver in the three heavyweight categories, for women weighing more than 87 kilograms, or 192 pounds, finishing first in the snatch-lift and combined categories and second in the clean-and-jerk.

The 41-year-old weightlifter was born as Gavin Hubbard and reportedly transitioned while in the mid-30s.

    1. John, where are the feminists? One main reason university-based feminists shut up, over the slow trans takeover of women’s sports, is that professors within the women’s studies industry would lose federal funding. I sat, for over 20 years, on the promotions committee at the Faculty of Arts, at my university, and external funding counts for a lot for promotions. And the federal SSHRCC funding, from the very left-leaning funding agency, is considered as valued brownie points. If a feminist professor would speak out against trans women, she risks not only action from hot-headed trans women, she would lose SSHRCC funding.

      Consider Jordan Peterson, the renowned psychology professor from U of Toronto. Before he came out as conservative thinker, he enjoyed a large annual funding from SSHRCC, employing a number of grad students every year. But as soon as he spoke out, he lost all of his federal funding. His regular psychology research is technical in nature, but that didn’t matter. The SSHRCC council is politically corrupt, and steers professors towards politically-correct thinking.

        That’s hardly surprising. Academe has largely become a money-harvesting operation. Profs are expected to bring in external funding in order that their departments can take their cut. In a lot of cases, that money goes into a common pool.

        Bringing in one’s own money is discouraged. Rather than rewarding initiative and enterprise, anyone doing so is marginalized. I guess academic administrators don’t like it because they can’t control that cash.

        1. My university probably works the same way as other universities. If a prof “wins” an external contract, either from govetnment or business sources, the money first goes to a centralized bureau — run by a dean or a vice-president — and the university then gets a 10% cut to cover computer use, library facilities, and other university costs. The other 90% goes into a special university account, and professors have to justify drawing from the account through a lot of red tape, etc. University bureaucracies are thick and over burdening.

            Many years ago, I applied for a certain faculty position. I made it clear that I’d be providing my own money for my research.

            I’m sure that was one reason why I was turned down. Since it was my own money I’d be using, I had complete control over it and no university administrator would get their hands on it.

            Isn’t there a certain other occupation that does something similar to get money? (Wink wink, nudge nudge.)

    2. Russian women loose their medals because they took steroids yet this GUY gets to keep a women’s weight lifting medal because he says he is a woman? Can this be true? I would like to engage someone who claims they can explain the mental gymnastics required to defend this…. On second thought; no, I wouldn’t. Might be contagious.

  5. Well, well. What do we have here? According to Wikipedia’s entry on “Laurel Hubbard”, we find this:

    “In 2012 [Gavin] Hubbard was appointed to the position of Executive Officer for Olympic Weightlifting New Zealand.”

    The next sentence in that entry says this:

    “Subsequently she [sic] transitioned to female and became Laurel Hubbard.”

    It’s amazing how “she” managed to get that gold medal in women’s weight-lifting.

    Simply amazing!

          2. jjm, English is also difficult for many people, those in particular who think gender has nothing to do with biological sex.

          3. The word “gender” is actually a grammatical term. For example, the word “his” is masculine gender, “hers” is feminine gender.

            In this idiotic politically correct society, “gender” is being misused. The word they should be using is “sex”.

        Speaking of baseball, the Dodgers actually claimed Juan Marichal in his declining years. Well, that didn’t last long. The Dodger management may have accepted him, the fans did not. Every time he was put in the game, the fans booed lustily. And continuously. Remember, he was wearing a Dodger uniform, but all the fans saw was the hated Giant who hit Roseboro in the head with a bat.

    At least half the population and more of North America support political parties that believe there is no difference between men and women.
    Such consensus, like Climate Science consensus surely means something.

    Where the real problem lies, is how are they going to discern the genders that are not female or male, 200 years from now when they only have skeletons to study.
    Did I miss an important bones class?

  12. Time to end the sexist practice of having women’s sports. There should only be one team, open to all, for each sport.

    If women, trans-women, LGBTQXHSTFWAs can’t make a team, too bad. It’s called full equality.
