Victor Davis Hanson has written a stunning piece about California … which all Leftists will conveniently ignore:
By many criteria, 21st-century California is both the poorest and the richest state in the union. Almost a quarter of the population lives below the poverty line. Another fifth is categorized as near the poverty level — facts not true during the latter 20th century. A third of the nation’s welfare recipients now live in California. The state has the highest homeless population in the nation (135,000). About 22 percent of the nation’s total homeless population reside in the state — whose economy is the largest in the U.S., fueling the greatest numbers of American billionaires and high-income zip codes.
It mostly comes down to restrictions on development. You can’t build anything especially housing. If you want to develop housing from a broken concrete crapscape, that will still get blocked (don’t have the link handy but it happened). If you want to increase density get ready to be set upon by entitled homeowners who think they somehow have a right to low density. Thankfully some cities are loosening up zoning laws, but none are in Cali AFAIK. Then there’s the tenancy laws…
Oh, it’s much worse than that. If you want to add a bedroom in my little white (and Asian) upper middle class suburban enclave, be prepared to run a gauntlet of officious city Planning Departments, county building inspectors and plan reviewers. You will appear before the Design Review Commission, whose decisions are as random and capricious as the craziest woman you ever dated. And then, you may have to appeal to the Planning Commission, who are dedicated to maintaining my little town in a time capsule defined by the year THEY moved into town. It is a daunting (and highly expensive) process. If you double the size of your postwar 2bed. 1ba. crackerbox home – from 1,200 sq.ft. to 2,400 sq.ft. , then you will be adding fire sprinklers and solar panels. And your increased water meter (to feed those fire sprinklers) will cost you upwards of $50,000.00 … and that’s JUST the “capacity fee” … actually installing and paying for the physical meter will run another $25,000.00.
THIS ! Is why housing prices have spiked out of reach for all but the most elite of elite Trust Fund babies. And, no … high density housing is nowhere to be found in the Zoning map of my town. Best live with the “urban” folk if you like beehive domiciles. High densities don’t exist out here in lillywhite land.
This is why corruption isn’t always such a bad thing. Sometimes bribing your way around insane laws is the only way to ameliorate them.
You do realize that is exactly how Donald Trump got buildings built in a corrupt, uber-Politicized and UNIONIZED NYC? You, and the Donald … understand the easiest way from point A to point B.
Provided you have someone who will limit the number of people you have to bribe.
I once did a project where we needed 800 or so permits and agreements prior to starting construction. I’d hate to have to pay bribes to every official (and their supervisor)! 🙁

So called “poor” people clearly like “poverty”; because that is what they continue to vote for. Let them have what they want, and shed no tears for them. They continually vote for the same politicians, the same political organizations, the same policies, that have sunk them into poverty, and failed to deliver on any promise for 100 years.
This is why I do not give to food banks, I do not give to charity. Everything is tied to Planned Parenthood, even the Salvation Army. Plus, they are very clearly unwilling to do anything to help themselves, outside of panhandling.
Stunning? Anybody stunned by such an article any more shouldn’t be allowed out without his nurse.
The real question is how the people responsible can be stripped of their unmerited power and unearned wealth, and the great state of California returned to the people who made it great in the first place.
The state with the lowest percentage of high school diploma holders is California.

But I digress. i couldn`t read VDH`s piece – too depressing. I admire his wrioting and insight but unfortunately he knows California too well and is percipient of its decline.
The State can’t pay for the Land they took for the Hi-speed dream line… NO more Federal money left that was Stashed by Obama …. They have drained the SS disability fund (every Californian claims disability & welfare) They are over the edge… Sure hope the SCOTUS rules that Citizenship must be revealed on the 2020 Consensus…….A one way Bus ticket to California from every State that doesn’t want the Medical & Social costs of Illegals..Poor California will be busing Illegals to WA State.
BTW: We are/and have been paying for the Illegal Alien Medical services @ every Hospital Emergency Room for years. The argument is that American Citizens can’t get Emergency Care… The Activists want Clinics just for the Illegals (out of sight)…. Of course Medicare ( including Trust Bonds) have all been spent on Obama care. Obama was the thief & Republicans let him steal from both SS & Medicare
