They at least treated the rest of us with respect, though, sometimes, that was done reluctantly. The reason was that those from HK considered themselves British and, therefore, part of the Commonwealth.
Moving ahead some 20 years, I was a grad student and, in the department I was in, at least a quarter of my academic colleagues were Chinese, but, mainly, from the PRC. For the most part, they were outwardly courteous to the Canadians, because that was one part of their culture that Mao hadn’t eradicated.
However, I often had the sense that they didn’t like us, they didn’t consider us as equals, and they certainly didn’t respect us.

2018 GDP was 1,609.86 Billion so that equals out to 32.1972 Billion from the PPC for Defense Spending.
