BC Hydro says there was a 0.2 per cent increase in energy consumption during Earth Hour last year.
So BC Hydro spokesperson Tanya Fish said there was no point in tracking electricity use during Earth Hour this year.
“The change in energy consumption during Earth Hour over recent years had been so minimal, so we found it difficult to attribute it to the event,” she said after Saturday’s Earth Hour came and went.
Don’t ever let them tell you that one little arc welder can’t make a difference.
I had fun idling my Chevy Impala for a couple of hours. Was only supposed to be an hour, but I fell asleep in the back seat. Actually quite comfy. 🙂
Three cheers for human achievement hour. We didn’t have to go outside in the cold to the outhouse or bring in wood to stoke the fire for night, nor get a pail of water from the well by the barn.
I missed it this year.
I normally use it as an opportunity to do the self cleaning oven thing; and I make sure all the electric heaters are still working.
I also noticed they changed the timing to start on the half hour a few years ago.
I had the lights on in every room in my house
I don’t have a self-cleaning oven, but I cranked up my central air conditioner and worked them lights!
And please understand that, if the result had been a 0.2% DECREASE in electrical power use during that time, they would have trumpeted it from the rooftops.
You got that right! Every year when there was a drop, it was headline news.
I have always simply ignored Earth Hour.
Truth is, I didn’t even realize that it had come and gone until reading about it online a day or so ago.

It’s been my habit to turn on all my outdoor Christmas lights during earth hour, because when the annual event started, 90% of my neighbours (who have thousands of Christmas lights blazing for all of December) would turn out their lights. My purpose was to show them up for hypocrites and also demonstrate that I don’t believe in the global warming religion and I have the guts to say so.
But through the years, the number of dark houses has been steadily declining. Last year I didn’t see a single dark house on my street, so for the first time, this year I didn’t bother. I guess people are getting a little tired of all the hype.
