A young dog imported from South Korea into Western Canada last fall brought along a dangerous hitchhiker: the Asia-1 strain of canine distemper virus (CDV), which had never before been reported in North America.
Scientists at Cornell’s Animal Health Diagnostic Center (AHDC) identified the virus in samples from the dog, which they suspect was part of a shipment of animals rescued from a Korean meat market by an animal welfare organization. Dogs that are already immunized against CDV likely are not at risk from the Asian strain. But if the virus comes into contact with wildlife, it may take a serious toll on wild carnivore populations.
The rescue dog racket is now bringing foreign dogs – including many bred for the market – into North America to the tune of hundreds of thousands a year. But don’t get caught smuggling a pork sandwich coming in Vancouver airport.
That is sad. How well does the current vaxxine protect against this strain? Flu vaxxines are not 100% effective against imported strains.
Let’s worry about the homeless and hungry people at home first when that’s done we will look into saving dogs in Korea
Most animal lovers are people-haters, here in my Bay Area experience. You know, the old “animals give pure love” … but “humans always let you down” (or worse, vote Republican*). So your argument is lost on em.

I cant stand any of this rescue dog bullshit. They’ve done more damage to the canine population than any single thing I can think of including dog fighting. The people who support this crap should be universally condemned.
Canada is full of unwanted dogs. Go to a rez and get one of the poor bastards that has to scratch out a living for himself in that environment. At least they aren’t going to bring in diseases that are going to damage our dogs/coyotes/wolves/foxes…..

That’s what a lot of “rescues” in Ottawa already do anyway. They go to Nunavut, bribe Inuit with booze to take their half-wild mutts, fly them south, and sell them for hundreds of bucks to would-be dog mommies who don’t know any better.
My ex did that. Damn thing pissed everywhere, stole our food, and nearly killed one of her cats before she agreed to get rid of it. This was all my fault, of course.

I think the “rescue”dog racket is perpetuated by the unrealistic ringer local rescue organizations put you through to adopt a dog (or cat). I have tried on numerous occasions to “adopt”(I hate that term) a german shepherd but my applications are not even responded to. We live on a 10 acre hobby farm that is totally fenced. We currently have 2 jack russell “terrorists” that roam quite freely and interact with lamas, horses and chickens and cats. They sleep in the house either in kennels or on our bed. Because we live in a rural area we also have gps locators on the dogs “In case” they do get out. And my wife takes them for a mile walk every day. So I’m not sure how you could possibly treat a dog better.Some people would consider us(rightfully so) two old retired farts who dote on their dogs. Yet we don’t get a sniff.We have cats too but when we ask the shelter(who advertise they are overrun with cats) they say “we don’t adopt out cats that will live in a barn. They would rather kill(euthanize) them I guess.
That’s ridiculous! You sound to be an IDEAL adoptive family. What’s their explanation? That your adopted German Shepherd might eventually do damage to a First Nations burgler?
In Ottawa many local “rescues” do a roaring trade in stray or feral dogs “rescued” in Nunavut. First Air will ship the things south for free, I hear, as the locals are only too happy to pass their problems on to white people to solve. (As usual.)
The scammers are afraid they’ll be held liable if Mr. Fluffypants escapes from an unfenced yard in urban Ottawa and mauls a child. In Nunavut wild dogs regularly maim children.

I wouldn’t recommend ‘adoption ‘ of one of those mutts. Some take to killing wild animals (deer) and at the same time are habituated to humans. Not a good combination.
I am so tired of people justifying the bad behavior of their dogs by saying, “He’s a rescue dog”. Barking, jumping up on strangers, being aggressive, etc.. Do not take on a problem dog unless you are prepared to solve the problem and not dump that behaviou on others.
Like there’s not enough homeless Canadian and American pets. Rescue? Did you get him out of a burning building? Jeez.
