I recall that when I was an undergrad, various student clubs set up booths inside the Students Union building. There was a variety of groups present, and those included various religious associations as well as the youth wing of various political parties.
The latter also included socialist/communists. (One of my classmates was affiliated with the Angela Davis club.) It was a source of amusement to go by their displays and openly laugh or poke fun at them. But that’s where it ended. In those days, we knew that by doing what we did, we made our point. The concept of free speech was respected by both sides. The commies were allowed to peddle their bilge and their detractors exercised their right to ridicule them.
But we also knew where to draw the line. Both sides kept it civil and, by keeping it low-key, we made our point. Besides, anything more than that and someone might have been barred from the SU building.
It saddens me to see that doesn’t seem to be no longer the case, particularly as far as the left is concerned.
