Pardoned ranchers who inspired Oregon occupation win back grazing permits

Dwight and Steven Hammond’s journey from ranchers to convicted domestic terrorists back to ranchers concluded this week when the federal government reissued permits allowing the father and son to graze cattle again on public land.

A Bureau of Land Management spokesman confirmed Tuesday that the agency had reinstated grazing permits for Hammond Ranches in Harney County, Oregon, who received full pardons from President Trump in July.

The Hammonds were sentenced to five-year mandatory minimum sentences in 2015 under the Antiterrorism and Effective Death Penalty Act for two prescribed burns that spread to public land, a sentence that stoked outrage in the rural West.

  1. Good for the Hammonds. But, they better keep an eye on their backs as should the Democrats win back the presidency they will be after them again.

  2. Brilliant news.

The Judge should be behind bars serving out the sentences he so egregiously and erroneously handed out to them. Did I mention that he should serve them concurrently?

Or at least a good old fashioned horse whipping in a public square broadcast live on CNN!

  3. Poor Harry Reid stands to lose another eye… The Chinese paid a lot of money to the 9th circuit & BLM to cut off the OLD water rights in Nevada & Oregon Etc…. Yes! the corrupt 9th circuit Court needs to be eliminated

    1. The 9th circuit has done much mischief and damage to the US constitution and freedom in the US. That they even exist is testament to the lack of intellect present in the US today.

  4. Jailed, and economically RUINED for setting a backfire which burned a “whopping” 100 acres. Yet not a single government (in CA), or corporate (PG&E), or “chain-dragging arsonist … has suffered a single day in jail for burning 100’s of thousands of acres. The corporate bankruptcy of PG&E will just screw their creditors and ensure not a single claimant receives a dime from the Corp. … it will ALL come from We The Ratepayers.

  5. I still don’t understand why the problem that caused this has never been fixed. Default title in the westernmost dozen or so states belongs to the federal government and not the state. Washington bureaucrats who have no understanding of local conditions rule the land like petty dictators. Why are the other 38 states free from these monsters?

Interesting parallel in Canada. When Alberta and Saskatchewan were made provinces, crown land was retained by the federal government but they were eventually embarrassed to give it up about 30 years later.
