Thousands of passengers remain stranded at Gatwick as police continue their search for the operator of a drone that has caused the airport to shut down.
Flights were brought to a standstill after a drone was seen over the airfield on Wednesday.
[…]
Sussex Police has been locked in a game of cat and mouse with the drone since the airport shutdown began.
Despite dozens of sightings, the device, which detectives believe to have been “adapted and developed” to cause deliberate disruption, has not been found.
Det Ch Supt Jason Tingley said police were re-evaluating plans for armed officers to shoot the drone down after other methods failed.
Three days in, and no one has called for a pigeon hunter.

Thanks!
Brilliant! The Muslims have figured out they can fly drones into sensitive areas and nothing happens.
Prediction: Within 6 months the drones will be wearing remote detonated suicide vests and will be flying them from the comfort of their local mosque.
Surely a more effective and cost-effective method would be merely to place bombs in litter bins in busy urban areas.
(Like the IRA. Good Catholic lads. Ain’t religion a grand thing?)
But I suppose, had they wished to, they would have done so by now
Freddy, quit stealing mah thunder!!!:-)))
Meanwhile, as punishment for failing to prevent Brexit, British firms are having their credit lines cut off by their foreign creditors.

Free trade indeed. They are currently still ully subscribed members of the EU.
“[P]olice were re-evaluating plans for armed officers to shoot the drone down after other methods failed.”
Only in the UK would just shooting the damned thing down be one of the last options. In France, the Gendarmerie Nationale would probably not only shoot the drone down.
Once they discovered where the operators were hiding, they’d shoot them too.
Except … it would be good to actually find the drone operator. OTOH … if the operator is found to be a Muzzie … nothing would happen, except maybe a larger housing payment to appease the terrorist. May’s Britain
As for shooting down, any self-respecting British landowner would be glad to sent his annual hunting party out to bag the bird. And those people can shoot accurately.
Why blame Teresa May?
Foxes have been ‘capering’ in Britain in the urban, suburban, and rural locations that I have inhabited around GB since “Churchill’s Britain”. Often spotted them in the early morning on their way home across the back gardens.
Currently, there are a few resident across the way from me. I see no reason to curtail their ‘capering’.
It has been stated by Ministers that a pupil (and hence, their lunchbox) may be searched, with the child’s consent. This is arrant nonsense, and always has been. Education Authorities and their minions always overreach their authority.
Clearly, such consent is easily obtained from children overawed by the authority of adults. One can forestall such nonsense by informing the Education Authority and the School, in writing, that you do not authorise such a search, or the confiscation of lunches.
As for the “icy grip” of the droners, I would expect some caution in releasing vollies of sniper fire through the surrounding car parks, major roads, recreational areas and Horley (should the droners choose that section of the perimeter fencing).
You understand how a shotgun works, don’t you?
“You understand how a shotgun works, don’t you?”
I do indeed. But the news media were reporting that the deployment of Police and/or Military snipers was being considered.
How would you deploy shotguns at Gatwick?
The effective range of the gun/ammo, given the fall-off in downing power over distance, would determine how many de-droners, armed with shotguns, would be required to cover the perimeter of the airport .
They would have to be on duty 24/7 to deter droners.
Great Job Creation Scheme!
“As for the “icy grip” of the droners, I would expect some caution in releasing vollies of sniper fire through the surrounding car parks, major roads, recreational areas and Horley (should the droners choose that section of the perimeter fencing).”
Volunteer drone-patrol. Imagine, average dudes with shotguns, patrolling the airport perimeter as part of a semi-organized safety activity. Cost to the community, zero. Coverage, good enough. Result, no more drone foolishness. Two weeks of patrolling would do it.
This notion is therefore utterly unthinkable to the likes of Fred Streeter. Average men, volunteers, with -GUNS-?! You can’t wrap your head around the notion of citizens performing tasks like that. They have to be trained, tested, certified POLICE before it becomes thinkable, and even then discharging a shotgun requires sober reflection by higher management. Consultations with the Minister, you know. Very serious.
And that, Fred, is why your country is a bollocking mess. Good luck when the welfare checks don’t come out on time, one of these days…
“Two weeks of patrolling would do it.”
So the Droners tuck themselves into a nice warm bed, while the De-droners patrol throughout successive cold, wet, winter nights. Doubt if they”d last a fortnight.
All clear for the Droners.
“This notion is therefore utterly unthinkable to the likes of Fred Streeter.

Thinks … Dad’s Army. There, got it in one.
“And that, Fred, is why your country is a bollocking mess. Good luck when the welfare checks don’t come out on time, one of these days…”
It always has been a bollocking mess.
Never been on welfare, but thanks for your concern.
So what? They still got Heathrow, and London City, and Luton, and Stansted. Lots of airports.
Too bad about the passengers, but never met too many Brits that had any sand anyway, very high opinions of themselves. The real reason Canadian soldiers were given their own Officers in the ww1 was because Canadians shot more useless British Officers than the Germans. video of 20 useless British cops being chased by 1 lone Jihadi. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VdqDCgDHbj4
OK, name me one British officer shot by Canadians during the Great War.
To the best of my knowledge, for the entire period on the Western front, all officers in the CEF up to and including brigadiers were Canadian. The 1st Div had a UK divisional commander, MGen Edwin Alderson, to September 1915. He was succeeded by Arthur Currie and thenceforth all divisional commanders were Canadian. At Corps level Currie succeeded Julian Byng — whom no CEF soldier would have had the remotest desire to shoot — in 1917. Byng was the last British OC of the Canadian Corps.
English Officers were the absolute worst. Very famous for marching Colonials into machine guns and minefields. Instead of reading books you should have talked to old Canadian Veterans who served in ww1. And yes when they got a typically inbred Limey for an officer that said we are going to march through this minefield, the Canucks just shot them and waited for a replacement. English Officers bought their commissions they typically were not earned. Britain would now be German except for Canadians and Yanks. Bunch of wankers.
“And yes when they got a typically inbred Limey for an officer that said we are going to march through this minefield, the Canucks just shot them and waited for a replacement. ”
Sure.
Long on invective and short on information. Also I had the honour to know a few of the men you spoke of, including one who was one of the few left standing after the gas attack at Ypres and another that got the MM at Ancre. You evaded my first question: name names.
Well in your little book world, I guess you never knew that enlisted men have fragged and otherwise disposed of a great many incompetent officers for hundreds of years, nay since the beginning of warfare and armies. To bad you never talked to actual veterans who were in the ww1 and the ww2 etc. And the British have a very long history of incompetence. You have no clue.
Or, as the late Georgette Heyer wrote in her book “The Spanish Bride” detailing Wellington’s campaign through Portugal and Spain, “The men say there are only two kinds of officers: the Go-ons, and the Come-ons!”.
oh look.
SDA’s very own troll.
keep an eye out for the unmebot, ya got a long way to go eh?
Leave us take dis up claw by claw, as Silby Barrett used to say.
“Instead of reading books you should have talked to old Canadian Veterans who served in ww1.”
“To bad you never talked to actual veterans who were in the ww1 and the ww2 etc.”
Read my post again. I did talk to them. I bet I knew more of them than you.
“Canadians shot more useless British Officers than the Germans.”
“And yes when they got a typically inbred Limey for an officer that said we are going to march through this minefield, the Canucks just shot them and waited for a replacement.”
Alderson never got shot, and Byng never got shot. They were the only British Army officers in the CEF. Any officers that did get shot were Canadian.
“English Officers bought their commissions they typically were not earned.”
Not after 1871, 43 years before the start of the Great War.
“I guess you never knew that enlisted men have fragged and otherwise disposed of a great many incompetent officers for hundreds of years, nay since the beginning of warfare and armies.”
Read my post again. I never said it didn’t happen. I said it didn’t happen to any British officers in the CEF, because there were only two, and neither one got shot.
“And the British have a very long history of incompetence.”
Read my post again. Find where I said they didn’t. It’s true of every army in history.
“Little book world.”
Otherwise known as the real one.
Why this effort because Someone Is Wrong On The Internet? Because the Internet is forever and now I can link to it. Feel free to get in the last word: I’m not exactly worried about you demolishing any arguments.
From what I’ve glimpsed on the internet, the millennial demographic tends to think this is a very funny clever trick and good for the environment because it interferes with polluting air transport…
Not sure shooting the drone down would have the best effect. You want its directing mind; the French solution discussed by JJM above can then be brought into play at need.
they don’t have a “counter” drone with a signal tracer???? How the “great” empire has tumbled:-))))
Are those Limeys deliberately stupid? Get a helo, find the drone. Once found overfly it, the rotor wash will bring down the drone. Don’t believe me? Ask helo pilots about vortex ring state. Also, put a shooter in there with a shotgun. Done.
Confirmed.
Britain: a completely stupid little Country.
Pretty obvious that the “authorities” do not have any intention of de-droning the airport.
Or they are classic civil servants, natural incompetents ,worming their ways with excuse and fingering of others.
The “item” will be dealt with as soon as we properly identify the problem and assign the appropriate experts.
Process time..two or three years at a minimum.
It does smack of a bureaucratic turf battle, doesn’t it? Public Safety won’t allow shotguns at the airport because regulations, cops are going-slow to make them look bad.
The people? Whatever. They’ll wait.
or, put a clamp on the sale and licensing and embedded unique tracer chips in the electronics, and train some drone pilots equipped with bigger faster units on and on.
I saw this coming the moment drones hit the news. a textbook case of regulation and control lagging far behind tech advances.
That was my first reaction…where is a sharp shooter? How many $3000. drones can you peg before reloading? That would be a dream job!
So big deal about getting rid of drones. Who needs a gun when 8th Century or earlier technology will do the job.

And for all of you wing nuts that are going to tell me that Eagles don’t fly at night I’m pretty sure a big Snowie can be trained like this.
All they need to do to find the source is to get a few ham radio operators to do a “fox hunt”. Shouldn’t take more than a few minutes.
