The BBC, which I’ve tended to think of as a high-quality news operation, presents this — with photographs — as just a weird human interest story. There isn’t a word about how access to health care in the UK can be this bad.

Those AWFUL for-PROFIT medical Insurance Corporations! Oh! wait.
Having just seen “The Rainmaker” (John Grisham) …seems it’s time to rewrite the film with Obamakkare as the villain … not “Great Benefit Insurance Co.”
Kenji, I have a friend in Ontario who has been waiting for hip replacements, he needs both, for over a year now. He has been reduced to using a walker and every step is painful. By the time surgery is done he may need a freaking wheelchair. That is Canadian socialized medical care.
yep….in same boat now. Referred to orthopedic surgeon Nov 2017…expcted date of first visit with said specialist – Feb 2019. Ain’t Canada’s Health care grand…?
But what floors me is the absolute religious conviction of your usual suspects that to allow 2 tier services ie; Private Health Care…is analogous to WW III – the Sky will TRULY Fall – End of the World etc.
Strangley enough, 2 tier is practised in many EU countries and eleswhere with little issue, regret or fanfare….of course
That’s canuckistan for ya … And why my overall Tax burden is over ~45+% of my income.
“But what floors me is the absolute religious conviction of your usual suspects that to allow 2 tier services ie; Private Health Care…is analogous to WW III – the Sky will TRULY Fall – End of the World etc.”
They are too proud to admit the 3rd rate unsustainable healthcare fiasco they vote for election after election.
Anyone know if NB is still sending oncology patients to Maine for treatment?
I too, hobbled around for years on a bad (right) hip. But … in the Spring of 2016, Obamakkare forced my wife’s employer (who provides our insurance) to dump our Doctors and medical plan … because of the Cadillac taxes kicking in (thanks Obama!). So I quickly scheduled my surgery (saw my preferred Ortho surgeon the very next day … no waiting). Had my surgery two months later (my choice to delay).
Tell your friend it is worth the wait. My surgeon was/is simply brilliant and has done well over 10,000 hip replacement surgeries. He lives in a big-fkcuing house with a 5-car garage, pool, spa, and tennis court (and hot wife). He is also one of the VERY BEST hip/knee replacement surgeon in the USA. I LOVE that he is filthy $$rich … why shouldn’t he be? He’s EARNED every cent of … ewwwww … PROFIT he’s ever stuffed into his bulging bank account. I was in and out of my surgery in barely more than a single day and NEVER had ANY (what I would call) … pain. Just reduced mobility and discomfort … for about two weeks! The surgery (anterior approach) is fully high tech with a custom, laser-guided operating table that ensures alignment of hips. God Bless our technology and Western medicine. And my hip is likely to last my lifetime with high tech plastics, ceramics and titanium that my femur literally grows-into.
Now … my left hip has just started giving me problems, and I know it is only a matter of time till I need that joint bone-sawed out of me too. But thanks to Obamakkare … I have lost access to my prior surgeon (Thanks Obama … fkcuer!). Will my current plan provide a surgeon of equal skill and reputation? Maybe. Probably. Because we STILL haven’t gone FULL-Canada with “single-payer” (read: “Socialized medicine”, “government medicine”). But I would have much-preferred returning to the surgeon who did my right hip. I am considering hiring him to do the surgery on MY dime … just to ensure a good outcome.
Here I am complaining about which surgeon to CHOOSE … and your buddy is still hobbling around hoping for ANY surgeon. I feel terrible for your friend … because hip-replacement is literally life-altering surgery. I went from a severely compromised physical state … into full health. This surgery isn’t “elective” … it isn’t the equivalent to a “nose job” … it is ESSENTIAL to living a FULL life. Shame on Canada. Shame on every dime your government wastes on luxury PM travel and transgender issues (wanna talk about “elective” surgery) … while your “free” medical system makes your buddy suffer. Shame on them all. And shame on the voters who “hired” a dance-instructor to manage Canadians health … and very lives. Shame. Shame. Shame.
A friend of my parents had her hip done in Florida, as her Ontario physician could only offer bed rest and a wait list.
“That is Canadian socialized medical care”
Now hush with that kind of talk; remember health care in Canada is free and personally doesn’t cost you a cent.
“If you think health care is costly now, wait until it’s free” P.J.O’Rourke
Just wait until “health care” takes over 50% of the total income of our provinces.
It’s coming for sure.
Here in CA … our public employee pensions will reach 50% of our annual State budget first! Then all the “free” universal medical care for everyone … will finish off the State when all forms of taxes and fees double … but the voters will allow it when Gavin Newsome sticks it to all the working people and corporations doing business in CA … after all … THEY voted for the slimy, smarmy, creep.
Smart people can handle excessive pensions and other no longer productive obligations. Simply inflate a billion to one and start over. Worked for Zimbabwe.
I think Ontario is now at 46% of budget.
Yeah, she probably should have gotten herself looked at BEFORE she gained 2 stone…
Not really the medical system’s fault if they had not seen her for 14 years.
Unless, the cyst grew in the course of a few weeks or days? Cause if she went to a doctor, everything was fine, and showed up again a week or month later looking 9 months prego, that is just normal?
We really need a timeline. Did she skip regular checkups for 5 years, or did this cyst grow in a single year or less?
“Ms Favell, from Swansea, started gaining weight in 2014.” Story is 2018.. She skipped the doctor visits for 4 years.
So; doctors cannot diagnose people they do not see.
Or, are regular checkups every 5 years or more in the UK? Is it 3 years wait lists for regular visits there?
The Beeb reporterettes didn’t provide a timeline because that would be work. This looks to me like a combination of a cementhead patient and a clueless GP, but just as you say, we really don’t have enough data to be sure.
No … the reporters knew the timeline … but chose not to “shame the victim”. That overrides accurate and full reporting these days.
My immediate thought was that she didn’t move far from the couch in her double-wide … during the … gestation period … of her monstrous tumor.
She fell through the cracks. A follow up visit should have been scheduled.
I actually saw a man who had the same issue in the…
you KNOW WHERE!
Aye ya yiey!
Cringe~~~
I assure you … if there were anything amiss with my boys … it would be straight to the urologist!
Poor guy was elderly…
While one can agree with the general drift that the socialist medicine sucks, there are some questions to be asked.
The woman said that over 2 years they were wondering if she was pregnant. Yeah, the blokes there are becoming more and more ignorant.
That the doctors could not tell what the hell was happening is no surprise, they are there to get a paycheck.
Where, what healthcare, who said that.
Was her doctor educated in some shithole? Canada seems to educate several hundred Saudi doctors per year so they have decent doctors. For us, Canada brings in doctors from a potpourri the worlds shitholes. Kinda backwords.
the Saudi med students were all called back when the TURDoo weighed in on the kashoggi thing.
I truly hope the TURDoo gets a brain tumor and dies real real soon.
Ive never said that anywhere about any prime minister but that
‘prime minister socks’ as in sock puppet takes the fcukin cake.
UK healthcare. The gift that keeps on giving.
