State of the Nation with Victor Davis Hanson

Open Question: Is it possible that the main reason why Trump is so hated is because, unlike past Republicans, he won’t sit back and accept the attacks from the Left. He punches back harder. Leftists have never seen this before, at least not in recent memory, so they’re furious that he “dares” stand up against them. Just a theory. Interested in your thoughts.

  1. Conservatives are expected to apologize for everything. Marxists apologize for nothing. In 2012 the media had Mitt Romney pegged as a Nazi despite the fact that he ran Massachusetts like a Marxist. Trump was having none of that and he won. I guess Republicans don’t like leadership with limp noodles.

  2. I think that’s exactly the reason. The left is a lot like a bully, and nothing enrages a bully like pushing back even just a little. The left is not used to being challenged, and this is frightening to them. Anger is a common reaction to fright. Look at the political talk shows. The lefties are usually the ones quickest to anger when dogma’s are challenged. They’re always- ALWAYS- the ones shouting if the debate goes any length of time.

  3. You’re 100% right. We’ve lived through XXX derangement syndrome where XXX is Bush, harper, trump or any other conservative, but until now nobody truly fought back against the derangement. I cannot tell you how much I appreciate this aspect of trump.

    1. VDH is a National Treasure. And a huge intellect. And a fantastic communicator. And a seriously knowledgeable Historian. I pray that God extend his days on earth so he may provide the perspective so desperately needed by the people of America

      1. Kenji, VDH is a BRILLIANT historian. Read ‘Carnage and Culture’ for starters. For my money, the best, most insightful historian currently alive.

  4. “We have not seen great things done in our time, except by those who have been considered mean – the rest have failed.”

    Nicolo Machiavelli 1469-1527

  5. You better believe that is exactly the reason. Trump will not apologize or stand down to anyone, unlike all of the other Republicans. He actually uses the Democrats’ MO against them and they are so dense that they do not see it for what it is. They are furious because they never had a street fighter as an opponent who calls their bluff. Bravo Trump!

  6. “He punches back harder.”

Incoherently ranting/lying on Twitter =/= ‘punching back’

That this demented manbaby is considered a Big Manly Man by the modern right signals its utter lack of maturity and its coming end.

    1. Sigh, I have to agree with you regarding Trump. The man is a blithering idiot and I can’t fathom why he has so many defenders on SDA.

      1. Because he gets things done and isn’t afraid? Have you been paying attention?
If you think Trump is a blithering idiot, what say you about our own blithering idiot? I’d trade in a heartbeat!

        1. ” he gets things done”

No he doesn’t. Obamacare: still intact. Border wall: thankfully unbuilt. North Korea: nil achieved.

Oh but he did screw up American trade and in turn drive American steel prices to the world’s highest. Like most presidents, he’s at his best when he gets nothing done or prevents things from getting done. The main achievement of Turmp and his supporters may very well be President O’Rourke.

          1. Young people who can neither AFFORD Obamakkare nor have a need for it no longer have to pay for it (or face TAX penalties). And these young people who have no assets or income to spend on Obamakkare … will still receive FREE medical care if they they need it. Same as it was BEFORE Obamakkare.

But to your point … yes … I DO wish God had “called” John McCain to his side BEFORE his ONE VOTE saved Obamakkare.

            See, Mr. UN-human… details matter

          2. “Young people who can neither AFFORD Obamakkare nor have a need for it no longer have to pay for it (or face TAX penalties).”

But those who do want health insurance probably can’t buy it without getting insured for a bunch of nonsense they don’t want. The PenalTax was the least bad part of the ACA.

      1. LOL perfect Trumptard response. “Hur stoopid head hur [insert schoolyard insult]”

You people constantly moan and complain about being ‘marginalized’. It might occur to you that you should be.

    2. Sorry, what is it you are crying about again? BTW, calling POTUS a “manbaby” speaks to your utter lack of maturity.

    3. well unmebot, you are proof of the punching seeing as you are punch drunk.
care for another helping? all quite benevolent mind you, ‘knock some sense into him’ old school stuff.

  7. Lol, and who YOU think is, will usher in the end for everyone else! No thanks.. The right’s lack of maturity?
Project much? Oh that’s right, it’s all you have..

  8. “Sigh, I have to agree with you regarding Trump. The man is a blithering idiot and I can’t fathom why he has so many defenders on SDA.”
I guess you didn’t read the article a couple of weeks ago that showed the MULTITUDE of achievements by Trump as well as the 630 progressive attacks on conservatives (both physical and verbal) in that same time frame.
The economy is “on fire” and according to Hansen(I watched it last night on Fox )one of the biggest reasons is the “optimism” he instills re: the economy.

Of course there are clowns on SDA who think he is a bully because he wants Nato member to pull their weigh. I guess he is tired of Canada sucking on the U.S. security tit for the last 50-75 years.

Trudeau counters by saying we are doing other things like-oh -say-Trudeau visited Latvia. Trump is no fool and just like he fleeced Turdo la du in the Nafta negotiations he will do it again. Its well known if you attack him he punches back twice as hard. He may not be quite as articulate as Jug Ears but unlike him, when he says he will do something he does it. Imagine what could have been accomplished in the last 2 years if he didn’t have opposition from goofs in his own party. Yet he got a hell of a lot done despite the attacks and opposition. Newt Gingrich calls him a genius and he is right.

I alos heard criticism today about his comments on the wildfires in Ca. They said its not time for those comments. It sure as hell is time. But the snowflakes don’t want to hear any more bad news.

Your not in university anymore. This is the REAL world now.

    1. “I guess you didn’t read the article a couple of weeks ago that showed the MULTITUDE of achievements by Trump”

He probably had better things to do than read FanFic.

“The economy is “on fire” and according to Hansen(I watched it last night on Fox )”

Smart people don’t watch Fox news. Or cable news in general. Have you kept track of stock markets lately?

  9. Quite funny how the clueless and useless see President Trump in their own image,”Incoherently ranting/lying on Twitter =/= ‘punching back’”.
    “He is a blithering idiot”…
Having built a few things myself,I see President Trump as amazingly productive for a politician.
And to increase my enjoyment, the man trolls his emotionally unbalanced opponents at the same time.
    Best TV in decades.
What President Trump has been doing is the only viable choice of action in a politically correct environment of idiocy.
And what I notice ,the Progs really blow their minds, when the man actually does what he said he intended to do.
That is Blasphemy,to our progressive comrades.

    1. Keeping election promises might mean handing themselves over to the consent of the governed – Hillary et al can’t have that.
That would mean the self-appointed elites would gasp, be doing the deplorables’ will. Reduced to headwaiters – oh the pain.
To their wallets. We have our own version of ignoring our worst instincts while ponying up ever more hobgoblin protection$.
That threatens everything she and they’ve worked (everybody over) for, call it affirmative hegemony. Winning without working.
If it wasn’t for racists, misogynists, islamaphobes or white supremacists, why would we need these neo-SJW losers?

    2. “I see President Trump as amazingly productive for a politician.”

I’m sure you see lots of things that aren’t so. You live in a bubble and a fever dream.

  10. Governor Moonbeam is NOW admitting that Yes, Trump is right… poor forest management was and is a major contributing factor to the out of control fires in California. I’ll be shocked if this gets reported after how the media preached that it was Climate Change and ONLY Climate Change and to suggest anything other was to be dismissed and mocked.

  11. With or without Trump in power, the left was becoming angrier and angrier at more and more things anyway

everything triggers them, they have a longer and longer list of forbidden things we can say or do

We are not to assume their gender, we are not to wear something from another culture

The left was sinking deeper and deeper into insanity anyway

Trump triggered them more yes, and he fights back yes, so Trump is pat of it but mostly the left has been descending into insanity for decades

Had there not been a Trump the left would have ended up as crazy as they are now, but just a few years later down the line

now why are that cray and crazier every year?

could be a mix of many things from the chemicals that end up in our food and water to having been raised like king children who’s single mothers were their servant

    many factors

but half the population is going insane

That is not an insult, it is a diagnostic

  12. Yeah, nobody ever quotes the second part.

“public policy could become the captive of a scientific-technological elite”

  13. Gonna stock up on some popcorn.
Once the indictments against the Deep State start flowing, I won’t leave the internet.
    It will be beautiful……

  14. The fact that Trump fights has shown me beyond all doubt, that there is never any reason to vote for someone who will not. That is the greatest lesson of Trump: the world is binary; you fight, or you are irrelevant. And there is no point casting a vote for irrelevancy.

The only productive thing you can do with irrelevancy, is ignore it.

  15. Towards the end, Victor Hanson brings Athens into the conversation a few times. There was not time to get into the depth of that addition to the interview, but I suspect that Hanson thinks the same forces that took down the Athenian democracy are at work to take down the American democracy and by extension also the western world.

I have mentioned the book, “Cleo’s Bastards”, and the theme in that book is also along the same vein as to the forces trying to destroy liberal democracy. Democracy has its own destruction built into it.

There is too much digression into verbal confrontation with a moron above when the topic is a very serious one.

  16. He’s hated so much because he’s Donald Trump. He was a joke when he started running for office and he’s a joke now. I would hate it just as much if Oprah or John Stewart or whatever else celebrity was president. His only redeeming feature is his notoriety.

    1. He’s hated because you hate him. Thanks for your input.

The only way you can avert your gaze away from Trump is to look down.

Let your ignorance guide you; why should the radical socialist party that has taken over the Democrats have all the fun?

    2. Donald Trump is hated because he has paralyzed the Democrats. Andy boy, your post is a simple yet perfect example of why a person shouldn’t blog while intoxicated. That last post was incoherent for any sane person.

    3. No, Trump is not a joke. He is a product of what our society has degenerated to. Through the machinations of the Marxists over the last fifty years, we have come to the point where the American people have a choice between globalist radical leftists like Bernie Saunders and that Cortez female Bolshevik or a populist like Trump.

Canada has succumbed and is now a wholly owned stooge state of Soros. Areas of Europe seem to be waking up to their loss of freedom and democracy and are beginning to fight back.

It seems Robespierre needs to have his head cut off once again.

      1. According to intellectual yet idiots, apparently Bernie Saunders is a white supremacist, given he’s a populist.

There are no concerns with duplicity, mean-spiritedness, hypocrisy, mendacity, incompetence, corruption or racism.

That is easily projectible onto opponents. Don’t own your shit, that’s for suckers; chuck it at anyone who dissents from their superior morality, which transcends real life experience and skill in favour of enlightened despotism, a Renaissance of sorts, not just for Rousseauian nonsense, as VDH pointed out, but for big government, big business and big labour.

The rest are outside the bubble. Nobody cares how poorly they do, any more than Obama cared what happened in the inner city of his hometown. We must all be equal; when that obvious contradiction fails, they inject themselves with semantic steroids like egalitarianism and its evil cousin equity; anything to not have to defend arguments or present data.

All for the means to control us and our money, like any despotic totalitarian corrupt and evil dictator would do.

That’s all they want; to run our lives for their personal benefit. Isn’t doing that better than being chased out of a restaurant, shot at a ballpark or executed by the new wave of masked violent do gooders.

It doesn’t matter if they lose elections, just find a friendly judge to break new law for you, as happened today on the border where the Trump administration has been ordered to allow white male idiots to cross their border and remain in lieu of bogus refugee claims. That razor wire can’t go up fast enough imho.

Remember Obama took children out of the mother’s arms so it can be racism. No wait – fire up the projector.

    4. Trump hater do not understand Trump’s MO and why people elected him. People like you think that he is a joke when in reality, he is an absolute genius…he didn’t fumble his way like Forrest Gump into building a billion dollar dynasty, a popular TV show, beating out all of his GOP opponents without support from the MSM and his own party and finally beat handily the person who was guaranteed her coronation as the next POTUS by a guy who was considered by all of the world elites to be a buffoon. That is some accomplishments. He used many of the tactics taught by Saul Alinsky against his opponents which infuriates them and he tells it like it is, in his New York street fighter way…abrupt, bold without any nuance and often with humour. Not presidential, I admit, but very effective. That is what people like about him. It is so funny how some people hate what he says or his policies yet thought that they were great when it was someone else’s policies. Their hatred is not based on logic or reasoning.

      1. Renee the seditionists are long past elections, they don’t guarantee the correct result; they just tell the people they’re wrong.

When people are wrong, you can’t listen to them, that would be wrong, the hate their hate so must shut them up.

The means or ends can be tailored to infantilize and atomize cultural serfs to turn to apparatchiks not their fellow slaves.

We have it too easy; our kids are not ready for the mean and lean times ahead. The present polarization gives evidence to that. Two inexorably contradictory worldviews, individualism and collectivism battling for what’s left of the middle ground.

Self reliance vrs entitlement. Good government vrs big government. Civil society vrs civic society. Coercion vrs liberty. This is our destiny if we don’t check electorally (and now extra-electorally) statist vrs globalism contradictions.

      2. “he didn’t fumble his way like Forrest Gump into building a billion dollar dynasty, a popular TV show, beating out all of his GOP opponents ”

That’s literally what happened. His only talent is manipulating abject retards like you.

        1. Well, UnMe if you believe that he literally fumbled his way like Forrest Gump, if it was just pure luck that you can fumble into building an empire, a popular TV show or bumbled your way somehow without any brains into being the most powerful person in the world as POTUS, I guess that I am talking to the next billionaire POTUS using the pseudonym UnMe.
People like you dismiss the good fortune and accomplishments of other people through hard work, intelligence, ingenuity and risk taking. People like Trump had dreams and took risks to achieve those dreams even when people like you laughed at them. That is why he is POTUS and you’re not.
To say that Trump fumbled and bumbled reveals that you are filled with envy.

  17. The Magic of Trump is his Competence & Confidence, those attributes define success… Dr Peterson & Hanson recognize the importance of Competence and personal confidence in providing a path to a simple vision… Trump is a CEO in the real world ( It helps he was cast as the final word in the NBC Apprentice) and real CEO’s hire the BEST People & expects them to deliver results… If you list what he is NOT, the top item would be a “Caretaker”, like all the politicians of the last 3 Generations…..

The last Great Generation produced Eisenhower & George Patten… The competence & confidence of that generation can’t be produced in an academia that teaches obsolete ideas & science… The data of yesterday is obsolete today if we expect forward progression…If we want a “Caretaker society” (stuck on stupid) the invention of a Quantum Computer won’t find a useful application.. What do we do with the sucker?

    JMHO
