Ironically, exposure to the flaws of the Canadian political system has awakened my Chinese wife to the benefits of free speech, transparent government, and the right to criticise our leaders without [obvious] repercussions.

With such power … one needs only ONE Stasi Agent to do the work of 100 East German Stasi agents of the Soviet era.
Any system run by leftists, aka, government employee, is going to be as successful as public housing, President Kennedys Fitness programs( and Vietnam War) and all the rest.
Everything leftist is destroyed. Skools, edumakation, budgets, value of the dollar, the GOP( go a bit slower leftists so we can rent seek ).
My news paper twice a week has someone being arrested, who’s been arrested 30, 60 more times. Whats the point? Like jungle in Vietnam, or sand in Iraq. Fail and waste, each and every day in everything. Bank on it.
I have been saying it for at least 30 years now … unless and until we take education out of the hands of the far left … we will continue to lose ground to the socialist/communist/islamic movement in the western world.

The Captain says he always had a healthy distrust of teachers, etc. I remember my awakening specifically to that distrust.
Grade 12 Social Studies (history? what’s that?): Canadian history, discussing the First World War, he was teaching us about the great Canadian invention, the Ross rifle. It’s a fabulous rifle and the troops loved it, he said. Ha! I said. I had been reading accounts of actual soldiers dissing the heck out of the Ross, including eyewitness accounts of the unsecured bolt killing the operator with its blowback. I openly challenged him, saying soldiers often threw away the Ross and grabbed the LE off of dead Brits whenever they could. He didn’t like that very much. I think the only reason I survived the brush was that I was friends with his daughter at the time. I had had earlier disputes with teachers over text interpretation, but that could have been chalked up to a difference of opinion. Here, he was just factually wrong, and it bothered me.
It wasn’t until much later that I learned that the Ross was actually a pretty good precision rifle. It was just horrible for the trenches. It had to be kept utterly and spotlessly clean to operate to spec. But the bolt design was just horrid.
Well, getting corporations to do the bidding of gov’t censors or mandates is textbook fascism, but you won’t find that in a textbook.
