  1. The Grey Lady’s business model has always been to tell America’s elites what they wanted to hear.

She’s actually gained readers, I’m told. Far too many people want to believe that Donald Trump is a dupe of some Russian/Israeli conspiracy to take over America. They refuse to admit even to themselves that they’re the real dupes of the real conspirators—Wall Street globalists, Chinese communists, and Muslim holy warriors—plotting the destruction of western civilization, against whom good and decent people are finally fighting, and winning.

    1. No worries, Venezuela’s Socialism was established by an Idiot.

When Higher Educated Bernie Sanders and Herr Acasio, along with others take Democrat reins of the presidency and congress, Their form of Socialism will be an American Made Motherland built to last 1,000 years.

Canada will eventually become part of our Territorial demands.

    2. “She’s actually gained readers, I’m told. Far too many people want to believe that Donald Trump is a dupe of some Russian/Israeli conspiracy to take over America.”

And how does that result in sustainability….The wrong demographics for adv revenue…Jelly beans & Botox…..They could give it away for free and get a Government Grant (CBC)

The same type of argument about Automation/Robotic Manufacturing… It is China that will have the problem competing against America which will have multiple small factories with fewer humans in each, but easy jobs herding Computers

  2. The posted article makes for difficult reading, describing the starving children. I spot read the CBC News’s and Globe and Mail’s web pages, and one can go months without reading any meaningful reportage on Venezuela’s crisis. The majority of the coverage coverage comes from small blogs like SDA. The well-monied media cartel, in Canada, want to protect the oppressive Maduro dictatorship from scrutiny. One wonders why.

    1. Because its the current poster boy for state economic interference but the vast majority of Canadians want the government to be just that: The Controller. To give them jobs, solve their problems, make them feel safe, tuck them into bed at night. Free market and capitalism and business and corporations are evil words in this post nation state even though so many ignorant hypocrites rely on them for their pension’s wealth generation.
When the time comes to pay the piper for these years of artificial economic ‘recovery’ the masses currently under the age of 45? won’t know whether to crap or do a cartwheel.

      1. To give them jobs, solve their problems, make them feel safe, tuck them into bed at night.

What’s the difference between that and slavery?

  3. The Left revels in death & starvation – Conservatives always make the mistake in believing that it’s simply Liberal stupidity and ignorance that creates social Anarchy. Not entirely.

One day “everyday conservatives” will wake up and understand that they are at war, and have been for a long time whilst losing their free and relatively “peaceful” society. Sooner will be much better than later for all.

    1. The NYT’s article was long on suffering and absolute horror … but very short on finger pointing. Very short on blame. Very short on any foreseeable solution to the problem.

D’ya remember when Puerto Rico was virtually wiped-out by a NATURAL (not necessarily self-imposed -although they have had generations to improve infrastructure) disaster. President Trump, with the full power and assist of a healthy capitalist economy … FED … and temporarily housed the entire fracking nation! And yet the NYT’s chastised, mocked, and spewed HATE at MY President … for sending plastic straws with the juice boxes (just kidding … but such was the level of their FAKE NEWS criticism).

So where is the NYT’s criticism and blame for the Venezuelan HORROR SHOW? The most they could bring themselves to say was that Maduro was refusing to accept foreign aid … but that he blamed the USA for waging economic WAR against his people (veiled shot at MY President). There wasn’t a scant mention of Danny Glover, Sean Penn, or any other well heeled Hollywooden elite who live in the lap of capitalist luxury whilst praising the nobility of Socialism.

Where are the BLUE UN helmets? (I hear they’re good with … children … esp. the little girls) How can the UN justify bloated budgets devoted to “climate change” and not spend a dime saving innocent children from the horrors of Socialist starvation? Where is the Pope? Ohhhh yeahhhh he’s issuing a cyclical this morning condemning the death penalty. Hey (Socialist) Pope! Jesus Christ (remember him?) fed 5,000 with a basket of leftovers. Why are you doing the exact opposite by condemning Venezuelan children to the death penalty for the crime of being born into a Socialist wonderland? Where is the Pope’s condemnation of a Socialist country that BARS foreign aid from helping the starving children? Where is the Pope’s PUBLIC, worldwide, CALL for regime change in Venezuela to SAVE THE CHULDREN!? And where is Bono? Off to a UN junket to shill for worldwide carbon taxation? Lavishly wined and dined to shill for global warming? Where are the filthy rich rock stars, who rail against capitalism, organizing another “we are the world” fundraiser to feed starvin’ chil’ren?!

I hate to say it … since the NYT’s has done an admirable thing in broadcasting the HORRORS of Venezuelan starvation … but I have to call this article FAKE NEWS. LIES. LIES of … omission. Lies about what they didn’t say. Didn’t report. Shame on the leftists who FAILED to tell the TRUTH, the whole TRUTH … and nothing but THE TRUTH!

  4. Venezuela continues to live the dream of a low carbon-footprint socialist paradise. There is no need to have malnourished children. They should feed them.

  5. Great insight from SDA. As an ex-intel analyst, the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela was on our monitoring list and the way things were evolving, a clear pattern emerged as early as 2010 and it wasn’t a long shot to assess then what happens today there. I hope they enjoy their socialism… Too bad Millenials are “intrigued” by the same concept.

    1. “Too bad Millenials are “intrigued” by the same concept.” Yes, in both the US and in Canada. Witness the popularity of Bernie Sanders and other “Democratic” Socialists in the US and the radical left “Liberals” like Wynne and Notley, including the LEAP supporters, here in Canada.

It seems the safe space crowd is beginning to believe the socialist lies of utopia just around the corner if the government is given control of their lives.

      1. But deaths from malnutrition have remained a closely guarded secret by the Venezuelan government

Hey NYT’s! What do you know about the US government holding “closely guarded secrets” … like an unredacted FISA application? Or 33,000 of HER “missing” emails (the NSA has all of em in Utah). Or the closely held Deep state bureaucrats secrets about how and why SHE was exonerated in the face of overwhelming evidence.

Best not be pointing fingers at any other government in the world … “holding closely guarded secrets” … to protect a corrupt, leftist political party.

        1. ” like an unredacted FISA application?” The copy that lawyers get does not redact content….We get the special treatment
Clapper the crapper may have signaled that Obama created the Russian fraud (Intel cluster) and his name may be on the FISA documents

  6. And leftist enablers, fellow travellers, white wine socialists, coffee house stalinists, and other nihilistists will deflect. They’ll just say that 1. It’s due to a US embargo or 2. Capitalism kills many more in the third world.

Just as they did for the Bolsheviks and Stalin, Mao, and Pol Pot.

    Pure sophistry.

  7. I breezed through the NY Times article quite quickly, not seeing any explanation of why these kids were starving aside from not enough food, the currency being not worth enough to buy food.

But nowhere in it were the reasons explained, as to why this has happened to their currency.
    “some economists say…”

The gov’t gave so many Bolivars to everyone, they became nearly worthless. Now, the oil field parts manufacturers and PDVSA workers want enough money so that they can afford to feed their wives and kids.
The gov’t won’t pay them in a currency of any value, so the workers won’t give the gov’t their labor. The oil workers that can leave, have left for locales where they can buy food. Those that remain, have no idea how to gain oil production from the earth.

Oil production has fallen from +3.5 million barrels / day, to less than 1 million barrels a day. The entire country is a basket case. Nothing works, and all those with sense of the situation know that the NY Times can’t speak of the real reasons for the failure without blaming those socialist ideals.

and those socialist ideals, are still held by those that buy their crappy newspaper.

  8. This is the opening salvo in the “we have to bail out the socialists” campaign. It’s for the children. Be on ABCBSNBCNN by the weekend.

  9. Hmm ….
Interesting, they talk and write as though nobody expected that.
It is something when those that publish the news, omit, lie, obfuscate, run interference and falsify what they call news, keeping the masses in dark and then they come up with stuff as though this is a monumental surprise.
There is the president that calls that fake news, is anybody shocked?

Hey, “journalists” are you bloody kidding me?

  10. A decade past, I spent the winter in Venezuela, in a small natural gas type city on the plains.
It was 38 every day, and cooled down to 28 celcius for about 3 hours every night between 2-5 am. It was during the second Chavez election, an election where Alek Boyd had shown on his blog Vcrisis that the gov’t had +60,000 people on the election rolls that were more than 160 years old, and where registered voters had birthdates that spiked on the first of every month, all year long. The gov’t of Venezuela had committed a grand fraud, those citizens with clear heads behaved just as frogs placed in cool water, as Chavez put the pot on the stove.

One US dollar bought 2.5 Bolivars. Now 1 US dollar buys 3,629,543.31 Bolivars, and about 7 years past, the gov’t of Venezuela lopped 3 zeros off their Bolivar and called it the “strong bolivar” to combat inflation.

https://dolartoday.com … which is viewed by Venezuela watchers as being somewhat behind the times, slow to react to changes in currency values.

So the real number is closer to 3,629,543,310 to 1 US dollar. And inflation is difficult to measure when there isn’t sufficient amounts of products to measure the value against.

Meanwhile, the NY Times reports that people are starving in Venezuela, because they don’t have enough food.

The +50 occasions of rampant inflation in the past century are covered well in the book, “This Time It’s Different” by Reinhart and Rogoff. Normally the inflationary periods only last a few years, followed by a hyper inflationary period, then a change in gov’t. This time in Venezuela, is different for its longevity, but not for its outcome.

  11. Well Kate, you were … almost right. But it’s not bulldozers that are in high demand … more like little ‘Bobcat’ tractors. https://www.bobcat.com/index

Better suited for digging … child-sized … holes in the ground.

    Horrific.

  12. well this is kinda new.
mass starvation caused solely by official policy, not some civil war thing or drought.
except for that pioneer of megadeath, the chairman aka mao.

sign of the times folks, a preview of the mass starvation to come when the ‘perfect storm’ happens.
when men beat each other unconscious for a stale sandwich you will know it’s here.

google ‘a day’s wages for a loaf of bread’.
and dont fergit, the bread handed out in moscow to the proletariat has sawdust in it for ‘bulk’.

  13. Throughout the article they refer to “the economic crisis.” Children are dying at a rate several orders of magnitude higher than in the rest of the world…Isn’t this a moral crisis? Isn’t socialism a moral crisis? They talk as if these outcomes are bugs in the system; when will they learn that these outcomes are features of late stage socialism?
