Peter Khill Acquitted

NOT GUILTY.

A 12-person jury reached their verdict Wednesday morning after deliberations started Tuesday afternoon.

The 28-year-old Hamilton man previously admitted he fired the two, close-range shotgun blasts that killed the 29-year-old man from Oshweken, Ont., in his driveway on the night of Feb. 4, 2016.

He pleaded not guilty, based on self-defence, with his lawyer arguing the shooting was “justified” because he believed Styres had a gun and he feared for his life.

Race was never raised as an issue in evidence during the trial.

This proves no barrier to the CBC report,  in which race plays the starring role.

  1. “an apparently all-white jury acquitted Gerald Stanley”
    WTF?
Is that the best CBC an come up with to show how horribly racist Canadians are?
    Apparently so…

  2. Good news! Another victory for castle defense.

Not surprising that CBC would attempt to turn this into a race baiting issue.

  3. The idea of self defence as “a right” making a comeback under a Liberal gov’t is something I hadn’t considered.

Keep this up and they’ll be pulling all their weight from free trade negotiations (possible sarc.) to rewrite the criminal code and snuffing out sovereign juries.

Not surprised that the CBC mentions race when it’s clearly not an issue, and unarmed in the subheading, more so than the actual reasons for the jury’s findings, and military training too! All the CBC pet peeves that go straight to their audience’s heart are right there, and for nought…

  4. “It is inexcusable that he did not call 911,” said the Crown. The Crown, meaning the government, would like us all to act as sheeple because only they can deal with the wolves – after the fact when its too late.

  5. It really annoys me when they cast personal and property defence as “taking the law into [their] own hands.” This is not a case of vigilante justice, which that statement would imply. Race-baiting aside, the tone smacks more of promoting the police-state and passive-victim culture than it does anything else.

  6. “experts during the two-week trial testified that the angle of the shots showed it was their opinion Styres was facing into the truck when he was hit [from behind] in the chest and shoulder”. If that were true Styres would have been shot in the back and not the chest as Khill had approached him from behind.

“The Crown’s position was that Khill was not acting in self-defence and that instead of calling the police and staying safe in his home when he realized his truck was being broken into, he “took the law into his own hands.””

We are supposed to hide in our homes and wait for the police. This is how crime gets out of control. No risk during the robbery and little consequence afterward.

  7. yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA !!!

memo to robbing thugs: this is known in some venues as ‘precedent’.

  8. It’s amazing that the Regina activists did not have representatives at the trial demanding a hanging !
Too busy setting up tents at the Wascana.
Must be financially secure being able to spend that amount of leisure time !

  9. I’m embarrassed that my national broadcaster mentions race. Do they really believe that truck thieves can be racially profiled?

  10. “Assistant Crown attorney Steve O’Brien cited testimony from Khill’s superior officer with the reserves who said military training also includes gathering information and never “charging blindly” alone into danger.”

Sure! Gather intelligence in one to one combat. I don’t remember that part. Good way to end up dead.

    1. Khill apparently gathered information, processed the information, and acted on the results very quickly. An ability most people seem to be losing.

    1. The CBC very rarely invites comments on First Nations issues. They don’t want to hear from ordinary Canadians who actually live among the FN’s, but would rather stick with their downtown Toronto fantasy that all FN’s are noble warriors for justice and equality.

  11. The “authorities”, whomever they may be, tell us incessantly to call 911, then run and hide.
In Hamilton, Ontario, rural Saskatchewan and small town Alberta, regular people on juries are saying No. Quite the disconnect between the population and those who are supposed to provide services to them.
Yes, I know, the Crown in Alberta gave up before the jury could speak. Maybe he’s a little less of a tyrant than most of them. Nearly everyone in the community backed the defendant.

  12. The crown was stupid.

Show me the law that says I *must* call 911 when a thief is trying to steal my vehicle in the wee hours of the morning on a pitch black night in a remote area where it is just me and my young wife.

A homeowner has always been perfectly free to make the decision to confront a trespasser on their property. At least thankfully that is still the case.

  13. Justice has been served.

Pray Peter Khill and his family will now be able to move on, having convinced a jury that he did nothing but rid the world of a junkie and a thief.

My only regret? That it wasn’t done before the junkie sired two brats who will, no doubt, follow their father into a life of crime.

  14. “This young man that was killed did not have to die. We could have helped him, been there for him, instead he leaves behind two young girls.” Chief Ava Hill speaks …”

This kind of statement from the Chief, AFTER the incident, never fails to pi$$ me off! Where the hell were YOU and your much ballyhooed First Nations government BEFORE this young man fell into a life of crime?

Where were you when he didn’t receive an education, got involved with booze or dope, and needed some guidance from a compassionate First Nation?
We have seen way too many of these type of scenarios, crimes done by FN youth who apparently roam about the countryside stealing whatever isn’t nailed down. Why are the FN governments SO totally inept with their youth that they all aren’t in trade school, then working for an honest living out in the real world, like most Canadians?

The Chiefs only excel at blaming the white man, stealing from their Band members, and doing SFA for their kids when they are young and need to be started down the right path. Don’t bother with the crocodile tears, Chief, most of us don’t believe a word you say any more.

Yeah, yeah, I know, the problem can only be fixed by MORE money from Ottawa.

    1. Why would you leave two young girls behind to go and steal a 15 year old truck?

    2. Don, you said it well. This could be repeated across the country almost every day. But somehow it is my fault.

  15. Big Government hates the sovereignty of the individual. As much as I respect and appreciate the police, sometimes you have to just take care of your own.

  16. *
when seconds count… the police are only fiteen minutes away…

    Here’s a thought… you’re not prowling around in the
middle of the night, stealin’ people’s shit
    … no one gets
    so much as a papercut.

  17. Let me guess … the First Nation’s children are taught by Tribal Leaders that STEALING a white man’s truck is entirely justified because the ‘white man’ first STOLE their lands? Glad to hear that a Canadian Jury doesn’t buy that kind of crap.

Hey Chief! Teach your children NOT to be criminals. Simple.

    1. Kenji – what are you thinking? Raiding the neighbours was definitely part of the native culture before the white man arrived. That’s how you got gear and slaves.

  18. Excellent result pity the poor man was dragged in front of the court and punished by the process itself. Still, glad he is acquitted. Coincidently I guarantee you that the RCMP thugs revoked his PAL and confiscated his firearms to make sure that next time he will defenseless and at the mercy of the non-RCMP thugs.

    1. Can you direct me to sources to confirm that Peter Khill is no longer able to possess firearms, please? I don’t know anything about the legal possession of firearms.

  19. So a Canadian shot a man in self-defense and was found Not Guilty? In Ontario?

This Yank is starting to believe Canadians are coming to their senses after going temporarily insane and electing Trudeau.

  20. Wow! So many disgusting comments to reply to…so little time. Of course race was not an issue during the crime. Of course it WAS during the trial. It is obvious just from reading the comments. Some Indian junkie who the Chief didn’t care about thought it was okay to steal a white man’s truck because the white men stole his land first. Except that some people say Mr. Khill wasn’t white. What is clear, is that Mr. Styres was Native, and therefore wrong. Guess what? It isn’t morally or legally right to kill people for stealing from you, regardless of anyone’s race. Possessions are insurable and replaceable. I wonder if he had theft insurance. I would like to know if he Khilled a fellow human being to avoid a few hundred $ deductible. People are not insurable. Yes, you should call 911 and stay in your home. So the cops are 15 minutes away…big deal. If he wanted to scare the thief away, he could have yelled out his bedroom window, which apparently overlooked the driveway. He could have fired warning shots several metres from the thief. Manhood is not based on indiscriminate power displays. If you want to be a chimpanzee, that is all you need to know. Humans have the power of abstract thought, and moral decision making. It is pathetic to read all these chest pounding, self-righteous comments. Can you not stop, and think, with empathy, and imagine what the death of Jonathan Styres means to his mother, and other family members? His community? Do you consider how his children might have benefited if our justice system, OUR justice systemS could have supported Jonathan to reevaluate and reform his way of life? The tribal councils and elders do not act in a vacuum. Support and encouragement are needed from the larger, and overwhelming society that the First Nations operate in. And for those of you who think it is important, I AM of First Nations descent; raised by my white mother, and valuing all humans, regardless of colour, religion or political beliefs.

    1. The injun robber got what he deserved. Glad he is dead, he was worthless anyway. Pity that the man who defended his property was dragged thorough courts instead of getting a reward for doing a society a favor. You too are worthless.

BTW a band of savages is not a nation.

  21. I totally agree with Jennie, these are disgusting comments. Race could have been a factor at the trail but even it isn’t, you can’t go around shooting people for stealing your shit. The family should sue Peter and at least get a financial outcome as this act needs to be punishable. I would like to add that you can’t be crying about racism either for everything, choose your battle! 5 years for man slaughter should be a minimum sentence if you shoot without warning at an unarmed person. This is not right or justifiable.

    1. Yes it is a right and the savage robber is pushing daisies. All is good, except that the poor man dragged though court should be compensated by the savages from the res.

  22. ” Can you not stop, and think, with empathy, and imagine what the death of Jonathan Styres means to his mother, and other family members? His community?”

He might have thought of that before he tried stealing someone else’s property. No sympathy whatsoever.
