  1. If Canada were a rug, equalization would be the nails keeping it from being pulled from beneath Quebec’s feet. And like a rug, those paying Quebec’s costs are also made to feel walked on.

  8. I was in Grade 10 in B. C. when all that FLQ stuff was going on nearly 50 years ago.
    I noticed how Quebec never seemed to be satisfied with anything, no matter what the rest of the country did for or gave to that province. I wondered aloud in class one day that if conditions in Canada were so terrible for Quebec, why was it still here?
    The response from my classmates consisted largely of howls of outrage that I should even make such a suggestion. Then again, many of them thought that PET was good for the country.
    And we wonder why things haven’t changed in the last half-century?

  9. The Quebec Problem: A Quick Summary….
    They are poorly educated. The language is more complicated than English even though there are less words than the English language.
    The people who have good jobs speak English.
    In order to go to English school: (1) you have to have at least 1 parent who has gone to English school. ( MUST PROVIDE WRITTEN PROOF)
    OR
    (2) Leave the province to get an English education elsewhere ie must be wealthy.
    There are many more reasons, that is the short version, IMHO

    I was working in the region of Mont Joli – Montmagny on a microwave project when the FLQ thing was going on. Supposedly major FLQ area. Somewhat tense conditions. My french even then was very poor. One day I passed through Dorval A/P on the way home. Armed troops on guard all over the terminal. When I got home I heard of the gold heist at the airport that day.
    With the army all over the place no less.
    I also think that the Quebecois have been an anchor holding back Canada throughout our history, but I am unsure if we would be better off without them. Still on some days I think the West would be better to jettison everything the other side of Manitoba. That leaves me with the question of what to do with the similar socialists in the cities of Vancouver, Burnaby, Victoria.

  14. I agree with PM Diefenbaker in principle. I am in favour of supplying each Quebecois two suitcases and a one-way ticket. They’ll need passports to gain admittance to anywhere else in the world so they should be issued Canadian passports valid for one year. If they come back they have to sign a contract to shut up forever about Quebec/French culture, nationalism, identity, distinct society, sovereignty, etc., etc. as the price of admission.
    My regiment was on the right of Wolfe’s line on the Plains of Abraham, but after shattering the advance of Montcalm’s regulars and essentially deciding the battle, things went very wrong with the handling of the former French colony.

  17. You can go to junior college (cegep) or university in Quebec if none of your parents went to English school. Harder for anglos to get in now because so many immigrants forced to go to French schools now want to improve their English and job opportunities by taking higher education in English.
    At the moment Quebec government better than disastrous Ontario government so economy doing better.

  19. I actually admire the stubborn tenacity of queerbec. I really do. extraordinarily skilled at reading the ROC and knowing precisely which button to push (there is only ONE button called ‘give us everything or should I say ‘donnez-nous tout les choses’ or we’se gonna take our ball and go home).

    re the ‘referendum’ I suggested to the local LIEberal mp a sol’n would be for the ROC to demand a ratification vote, ie do you *really* want to leave?
    -if the ratification passed, the ROC would be FIRST to recognize them.
    -if it failed, then STFU about any more ‘referendums’ for the next 50 friggin years and STOP screwing up our credit rating, foreign investment, etc etc.

  20. furthermore, when it looked like the referendum of 96(+/-) might pass, up pipes the natives in quebec announcing THEY just might do the very same thing, secede and REJOIN the ROC, (giving them an unprecedented bargaining position).
    naturally the froggies (fwench for hard-core hypocrite) followed that with an announcement of their own that it would not be permitted.

  21. They’re still p.o. for losing in 1759 in Q city. The ” pur laines” are getting diluted by the recent immigrants, something that was unheard of before. In the past everyone but them were LES MAUDITS ANGLAIS !! Now the lovely French girls are marrying ‘out’. How ironic.
