  2. The Torstar might possibly be correct. Spreading some of that government largess to other media could make the difference between life and death. The Liberal government in Ottawa buys and pays for CBC’s undying loyalty with taxpayer dollars. Think of how much more loyalty they could buy if they were as generous to other media as they are to the CBC – although they pretty much have Torstar’s loyalty firmly secured and have had for a long time.
    When T-Star mentions spreading some of that to other media in order to help them survive you can bet your sweet bippy that it is not including the National Post as worthy of government help. What the Star is advocating here is a Canadian version of ‘Pravda’ and with that the total and complete screwing over of Canada as a free country.

    The union has all this money for political ads, unlimited resources to get their party elected, and there is nothing, no one, ever standing in their way. If you are in a union, you are evil. Full stop. Unions are a creation of satan.

  5. Sure they would include the Post, which is not even that Conservative these days. Rebel is about the omly source for a counter-viewpoint. My concern is that they will not cut the money from the CBC funds, but just spend additional taxpayer dollars.

  7. Recently while walking into a local supermarket there was a small kiosk where people were giving away a free Toronto Star and a real deal on a weekly subscription. I watched for about 10 minutes while person after person said “No thanks”
    If you can’t even give away your product for free maybe it’s time to close up.

    What is interesting here is the way this story is being spun, which is basically as follows:
    “If the CBC can suck at the public teat, why can’t we?”
    You will notice that the questionable ethical issue of government subsidizing a putatively “free press” goes entirely unchallenged.
    In other words, here’s what the Globe and Mail isn’t asking:
    “If we can’t suck at the public teat, why can the CBC?”
    Journalism indeed.

  9. If nobody is taking your product even for free you have a problem. The only concern I have is the major alternative online news sources like msn, google etc. provide even more obtuse Marxist material than newspaper writers provide and that’s saying a mouthful.
    We have PM Trudeau, (I always use his title and name for the full affect) because outlets like MSN provided a 24/7 full frontal attack on Harper and it happens that those outlets are where many today browse for their news.

  10. Come on Linda, of course they would cut CBC funds to get Torstar funds, money has to come from somewhere doesn’t it? Remember J. Pierre T. said to the veteran, giving these other benefits so have to take if from the pensions. That is how budgets work you know, they don’t just balance themselves.
    Okay, now back to the real world, just use the credit card to buy the pet food while making excuses why can’t pay your bills.

  14. when I canceled a subscription to Ottawa Citizen a few years back, I sent a note to the Publisher with my reasons.
    Basically news was available on line paper was for analysis comment and opinion. But the commentators at the time were reliably liberal, no other view was ever present. This despite the fact they were trying to sell copies in a largely rural area, the Ottawa valley and even Ottawa at the time was represented by CPC. So they were focusing their commentary to a tiny segment of readers in centretown, little wonder no one was buying. I suggested featuring a couple of writers from the parent company Post Media. Astonishingly, he replied back indicating he agreed, more or less, that he wouldn’t pay to read his columnists either. Since that time their product has deteriorated remarkably, usable for the TV Guide and starting the wood stove. I wouldn’t be interested in a subscription now for free.

  16. Newspapers reflect their audience. Tor Star is progressive because Canada is a progressive country. Same thing with the G&M.
    The Internet has almost eliminated newpapers. Once the boomers quit subscribing it’s over. No young people get their news from newpapers it’s FB and other platforms.

  18. Of course dedicated purveyors of socialism would expect their comrades in government to fund them.
    What I always wanted to see was an independent broadcaster legally challenge the CBC’s right to government funding while simultaneously competing for the same shrinking pool of advertising dollars available to the entire industry. I thought that would be an illegal practice in a supposed free market economy, in this case giving the CBC an extremely unfair advantage over it’s competitors. There must be some protection written into their charter or I suspect the CBC’s ‘double-dipping’ would have been legally challenged long ago.
    Not that I will miss any of these filthy propagandists when the CBC helps put them out of business, mind you.

  19. Torstar ain’t going anywhere. They own a 100+ small town papers in Ontario through Metromedia.
    In my area we had 2 local papers. Metromedia bought one and forced the other out of business. Its totally conservative area but their editorial line and choice of stories could be directly from the Torstar.
    They also branched out on the net and own many hobbiest websites, automotive etc. I was a member at a couple and they tanked immediately when taken over by the Torstar commies.
    These clowns don’t deserve one nickel of my tax dollars. There are already too many Liberal fartcatchers in the media, we don’t need more or to subsidize the ones already there.

  20. Not sure that is true exactly, I think they reflect the views of colleagues in the newsroom, not the potential readership. If they did they would sell a few more papers. TorStar columnists’ opinion of men, particularly rural/conservative men is not designed to entice many of them to buy copies. But I agree their days are numbered whatever they do.
    Still the idea that CBC is advantaged unfairly and it is, and newspapers should also be subsidized by the same government is so preposterous that the PMO will be studying it. Then Jr who refuses questions from reporters he dislikes will fund publishers with the same criteria. There is an alternative solution, as everyone here is aware of; wrap up CBC funding now.

    Most countries have state sponsored media. Think DW/Germany, Pravda/Russia/ BBC and so on.

  23. I quit voting after Harper kept the CBC funding in place while he held a majority. I will not vote again until I see someone govern like Trump. I won’t help anybody get there but once they are there and show they are serious I’ll work like hell to keep them there.

  24. My father has been a devoted Toronto Star reader for 11 years. This year he received a letter that he no longer lived within their boundary and home delivery would end. He phoned to complain and was told that he had never lived within the boundary and should never have received a paper in the first place. Then he received an offer in the mail to subscribe to the Toronto Star – at almost twice the price of his previous subscription. It was soon followed by a discount coupon for about 10%.
    He now reads the Hamilton Spectator. It burns just as good in my wood stove so I don’t care. But the delivery man doesn’t come until 8:00 am (previously it was 7:00) and that really cheeses off my father who by that time has had his breakfast, had his tea, and gotten dressed ready to start his day – all without the help of a newspaper.
    The days of the paper press are numbered. I would never sit at the end of my laneway waiting for the paper to arrive. He has never read a blog. My children don’t have cable TV and never watch the news. The world is changing rapidly.

    that was some 10+ years ago. Ive kept my promise to never buy a newspaper subscription again.

  28. Harper would have been pilloried for getting rid of the CBC. Look at the fuss made over the long form census. He needed another mandate in which to change the political climate sufficiently to ax the CBC. A gradual starving of the beast would have eventually worked.

  33. Maybe progressives don’t have the means to buy much and are less generous with their money but they do belong to well funded unions who wield tremendous power and influence. They also have the sympathy and financial support of the one world government crowd, the globalists if you will.
    So these guys who don’t support social causes are aligned with groups who are more than will to.
    Jamie MacMaster: If Harper would have axed the cbc, bongo would have reinstated it post haste. In the minds of progressives the cbc is untouchable. Better to choke it down when you get the chance. As each year passes it becomes more redundant. An anachronism left over from another era. Once the boomers ride over the divide the cbc will have no audience. Kids wouldn’t think of looking/listening. It’s over.

Bet on the fact that the “newspapaper business” will only go out of business after there usefulness to the Liberal Party has been exhausted. The Liberal Party Media have one more election to scuttle, the Post National State still needs its Media enablers, at least one more time. Liberals are like the Mafia, they’ll pay off their friends and destroy their enemies.
