Joe Hazelwood had, apparently, tied one on before sailing. From the accounts that I remember, once the Exxon Valdez got underway, he went below to his cabin and slept it off. A junior officer was left in charge of the ship, one, who I understand, didn’t have the same amount of experience that he did.
For some reason, the ship ran onto the rocks that damaged its hull. One story I heard was that the aforementioned officer was careless and didn’t notice the hazard in time.

It’s from “The Longest Day”, but Bill Millin, as Lord Lovat’s personal piper, did pipe the Commandos ashore on D-day. Some years afterwards, he chanced to meet some Germans who had been on the opposing side that day. When he asked why he hadn’t been shot, their response was “dummkopf”. Seems they thought he was just crazy, and forbore to shoot at him.
