    As a BC’er I am in complete agreement with Alberta’s actions. The Americans have been shipping crude oil to Anacortes for 50 years with no appreciable incident. I hope AB escalates their trade restrictions to the point that it materially hurts the BC economy. In the process they might expose the NDP for the light weight thinkers they are. The irony is that the AB gov’t is also Dippers. To give Notly credit she actually put a figure of $1.5 billion in lost AB government revenue if the TransMountain is not built. IMHO that is a gross understatement but at least the job of educating citizens has begun.
    I suggest the AB government start refusing entry of CNR trains loaded out of Prince Rupert into ALberta. Start selectively and then escalate to a total shutdown. Shutdown BC access to the Alberta gas and oil supply.

    I am also in BC, having split my life between BC and AB I have friends and family throughout both provinces. I support pipelines and the oil industry’s ability to get product to market and am most definitely NOT some kind of greentard. That said, I have grave concerns myself about the tanker traffic it will create. The US Navy, who I would assume is a world leader in technology and procedure has pretty much just proven to us single-handedly that shipping accidents are UNAVOIDABLE.
    I think it is insanity to operate high volumes of these massive ships in such notoriously narrow, busy, hazard-ridden waterways.

    Tankering oil is a necessary and acceptable risk. And I will humour by pretending a big spill were to happen.
    What would be the long term environmental impact. Go look at where Valdez happened now and try and find evidence that it is having an impact now. Ditto the much larger spill caused by the BP rig.
    And compare that to the PERMANENT massive environmental damage caused by hydro reservoirs around the globe.
    Were there to be a spill – that your shrieking harridans in that “concerned” article claim is 10 percent over the facility’s life time (50 years? 100 years?) we are talking about an area that is very easily contained and were recovery infrastructure is literally a couple miles away. This mitigation will be very high and as I note above the damage whatever it is will be temporary.

And there wouldn’t be any modern rock or blues guitar without the huge influence of Charlie Patton, mentor to Robert Johnson, Howlin’ Wolf and many others. Charlie Patton was also a showman and played his guitar behind his back or between his legs. Go listen to those two and you will see where rock ‘n’ roll, rock, and the blues came from.
    If you haven’t seen it PBS ran a 3 part documentary last year called American Epic about the recordings made in the 20s and 30s, the genesis of rock ‘n’ roll, country, gospel, even rap. I can’t recommend it highly enough.

Re: Jordan Peterson’s interview on Fox and Friends … I want to turn to the discussion they had about the epidemic cancellations of “Father-daughter” dances because some fatherless daughters or self-identified gender neutrals might be triggered and get all weepy … let me offer another one of my personal life stories …
    I grew up as a motherless child. Yes, my own biological mother literally went to court to give up her parental rights to my brother and I (in 1964! when this kind of thing NEVER happened). Yes, cut off all relationship and responsibility as a mother. And as a liberated mother … she “visited” my brother and I exactly ONCE. She did this because her new husband had raised his 4-adult boys and was “over it”. Over the whole parenting thing. And my brother and I were no trouble whatsoever … perfect – no – we were kids … but certainly no handful to raise. BTW … she knew fully well that she was releasing us into the sole custody of her alcoholic, dysfunctional, ex-husband my good ol’ Dad. My mother CHOSE her second husband over her own (only) children.
    The purpose of another one of my life’s stories? I should be “triggered” at every mention of “mother”. I should recoil into the fetal position on “Mother’s Day”. I should HATE women. I should demand our society erase any and all observance of anything “mother”. I should be a raving Pro-abortionist … wishing NO woman ever become a mother. I should embrace gender neutrality. All because my mommy lotto ticket was a loser. Of course none of this true. My experience has caused me to revere and love mothers … intact families … and respect women who behave like women … giving, nurturing, protecting (esp. of their own offspring). I treasure women. Love women … and tend to hang out with women at parties instead of talk sports with the guys. I couldn’t even IMAGINE myself saying that the Girl Scouts should be abolished because of the mother-daughter activities. Sheesh.
    What I have been taught is that SELFISHNESS can be an UGLY human characteristic. My own mother’s selfishness (perhaps self-preservation) trumped her biological instincts.
    Final anecdote … while on her deathbed one of my half-brothers (by her remarriage) called me in 1990 (first time I’d heard from him since 1965) to say that my mother wanted to see me before she died. So I dutifully loaded my wife and 3-children into one of my unfortunate mini-van purchases to see their dying grandmother whom they’d never met … to let her know that I’d done alright. We chatted and I did my best to let her know that I had no hard feelings and that I’d understood the choices she made. But her response still rings in my wife’s ear as the most unbelievable thing she’s ever heard … my mother asked me … “why did you never try to find me, and come visit your mother.” I was too kind to say all the things I wanted to … and left shortly thereafter to take the kids on The Universal Studios Tour. My kids had a ball!

    If my mother-interrupted weren’t dying during our ONLY visit since I was 10-years old … in 35 years … the conversation would have been VERY different. When I graduated from college, struggling, facing the world “dead broke” (to borrow HER quote) and frankly a LOT scared … I would have torn her a new one … along with my alchy-father. However, 35 years gives one a very different perspective. When but a child, when this all went down, my brother and I were bewildered, stunned, and almost catatonic at what had just happened to us … without any hint or warning. Ripped out of our schools, mid year, and dropped into an unknown environment. We were in SHOCK … I think fair to say … a true medical/psychological state of SHOCK. Mom had just declared herself to be our ENEMY. Sheesh. But time and experience gives one valuable perspective and if I dare say, wisdom. And as a Christian adult, I commend my mother into God’s hands … and anything that may entail.
    Which is a reminder that our schools should be teaching character and forbearance rather than capitulation to emotional slights. Life’s a bitch, and then you die. Get used to it … and your life will start improving almost immediately. Hey! I’m starting to sound like Jordan Peterson. In many ways, my parents did me a favor … they “taught me” *snicker* “forced me” to be self-reliant. And taught me to be a keen judge of character. I “read” people very well. I can tell quite quickly who are the bullshitters and who are genuinely solid characters. And that skill allowed me to accept life-saving help from a variety of people who lifted me up and supported me … I didn’t survive completely on my own accord. The kindness of newfound friends, strangers, and family quite literally saved my life and made me who I am. Oh … and the government social support structure helped along the way … and functioned EXACTLY as it should … providing just enough help to allow me to help myself.
    Erasing Father-Daughter dances to accommodate potential emotional hurt … is a crippling act. It is like FORCING children to walk with crutches when they have two perfectly good legs. We should always encourage exercising … always.

    for the life of me I cannot explain, after those 10 formative years of getting beat up regularly and the rest of it, why, why, why ‘they’ didnt cultivate a serial killer or a suicide.
    something resilient and permanent within me held on. having a form of autism, I didn’t even ‘get’ the full impact of the alienation I went thru.
    the only satisfactory explanation I have come up with, there is a God, He ministered over me, steered me away from the extremely dangerous stuff, physical, psychological etc because *He has a plan for me*. I cannot list all the ‘near misses’ I’ve had. cannot be explained by ‘coincidence’.
    and now, well suffice to say, for example, after starting my first full time permanent job in 1972, within about 3 years I packed on about 50 pounds of solid muscle. NO ONE got near my family after that.
