Recent Deaths In Texas Attributed To Climate Change
First, let’s pretend we’re back in USDA Hardiness Zone 7. We got pushed into the warmer Zone 8 in the newest map in 2012, but many of those Zone 8 plants have suffered mightily in our cold winters since. As you’re replacing them this spring, concentrate your re-plantings on Zones 7 and 6 plants that will hold up to the cold. Limit the numbers of more tender types that you plant to smaller quantities.

Sadly, I too am afflicted with delusions of being in a warmer gardening zone. I will continue to buy zone 3 plants only to have them killed by a harsh zone 2 winter. Unlike frantic followers of CO2 Almighty, I don’t blame catastrophic anthropogenic global warming/climate change for warmer or colder seasons because I’ve yet to experience one that doesn’t fall within the wide range of natural variability.
Besides, not every change in flora and fauna should be blamed on small changes in the concentration of a minor trace gas. I was going over some chemistry concepts last week with one of my kids and we were discussing limiting reagents/reactants. You have to find out which compound restricts the reaction. Same with plants and animals. There’s light, moisture, wind protection, food availability and dozens of other variables to consider when studying a plant or animal specie’s success or failure in an area. What is the limiting variable? This should be obvious in science, right? But no, the catch-all explanation is always “it’s the wrath of CO2…repent”.
If the species is in decline…it’s absolutely because of CAGW
If a species is increasing…it’s despite CAGW
If there’s no change…it will soon be endangered by CAGW
It’s evil manmade CO2 emissions doom all the way down
An example: the butterfly battles between Jim Steele and Camille Parmesan over the causes of reduction and increases in butterfly species in the UK and Yosemite. Parmesan always goes to a CO2 explanations, even with ample evidence of other, more important variables. It’s not an exciting read but it provides a fairly accurate template of CAGW alarmists using CO2 as a single variable explanation for a change in species numbers and locations.
I won’t post links because of spam filter problems but any search engine (except perhaps google) should find both sides of the issue.
I am now officially in Zone 3 when I used to be in Zone 1/2 fringe. I have spent 30 years buying Zone 3 plants and virtually every one winterkills within a few years. Climate change is a fraud although government agricultural scientists have bought into it. Ask anyy farmer whether the climate has gotten warmer or growing season increased. Not!
Most of my plants die from deer grazing … but, then I learned which plants are deer resistant. See … adapt and survive. It’s so simple … even the animals do it.
It’s the latest meme from the AGW fanatics, never to be questioned.
Record cold is caused by record heat. It’s CO2. Praise Allah
I had a moose pruning the fruit trees last night – the dog barked for hours. I was considering putting a .303 inch diameter hole in the moose – feed the dog for the winter and save the trees – killing two birds with one stone.
Plant a lot of stuff and create a micro climate and the shrubs will be healthier especially in windy open spaces. If you plant one thing, it will likely die because you’ll also forget to water.
You know what would save millions in crop insurance payouts and total crop losses? Technology to stop hail. There’s nothing worse than seeing your vegetables, fruit trees and berries wiped out in a 5-10 minute burst of hail. I have a greenhouse but you can’t grow everything in there.
Perhaps a H20 tax paid to Ottawa would prevent catastrophic frozen water?

We learned to not take things too seriously …hail & wind damage to house and car are costly. But a few plants …well it ‘s more like …oh great they made it to harvest!
My neighbor was skeptical about our growing tomatoes in giant planters on the patio. At the first sign of hail they were saved many times because we rushed outside to cover them with jumbo plastic protective covers. I live in zone 3A. The varieties were all a complete success…very sweet!
My neighbours were glad of our persistence as they received and enjoyed some of our harvest too. We had lovely tomatoes well past the Canadian Thanksgiving!
Hahahah ha ha … I’ve only seen ONE moose in the flesh in my lifetime (Glacier Park) … and would think it takes a .50 cal Hawkins to drop one.
Let’s not get too excited about this article. All the author is saying is just because you/we have a couple of consecutive mild winters don’t get cocky and plant valuable stock rated for the next Hardiness Zone up. You’ll regret it when the inevitable really cold year happens. Been there; not getting caught in that scenario again. A) you lose a year. B) you’re out of pocket. 🙁
reality is damn near impossible for some people.
