  1. The first rule of politics is you take care of your friends.
The second rule of politics is you do what you have to do to get re-elected.
Note that these rules are not mutually exclusive.

  2. No wonder he’s happy to sell his shares.
He’ll buy them back again after he leaves the finance office, they’ll be down 30% from where they are today.

  3. Also, they apparently were given control over the Sears Canada pension plan as part of the bankruptcy process. I wonder how that happened.

  4. Morneau is going to have to resign. The new Sun report today about the Bank of Canada contract is pretty blatant graft. Maybe if they’d never stepped in it with the tax change mess he could have survived but corruption plus hypocrisy is too much for even the Liberal friendly Canadian media to hide. He’s done.

  5. Maybe so Slaw but this isn’t corruption or hypocrisy. It is simply standard practice for the Natural Governing party, particularly for Cubec progressives.

  6. Morneau is caught in a noose of his own creation. Because he didn’t put his shares in Morneau Shepell into a blind trust, he has benefited directly from contracts which that company has with the Bank of Canada. Strike one. He can’t sell his shares because they have gone up 25% since the Liberals have taken power, and he had informational knowledge of all their transactions (being a shareholder). So if he sells his shares, after the increase in value, a real case could be made for insider trading. Strike two. Being in business, and not understanding either strike one or strike two means that he is either corrupt (very likely – married to a McCain) or he is ignorant. Either way, Strike three. You can’t have a finance minister with these problems so he has to resign or be dismissed.

  7. Morneau seems thoroughly hapless, and most of it is of his own making. I don’t recall a finance minister of any party in recent years being quite as lame as this.
Usually even the most clueless PM is quite careful about who he picks for this portfolio; you can have a quacking duck for, say, heritage or status of women or even indigenous services and still muddle on through but finance needs a defter hand because there are actual consequences.

  8. Oh come on, if the budget will balance itself and the economy will grow from the heart out, really, why do you need a competent finance minister and how can there a conflict? Because he has a heart?
We do not know the basis of the Conflict of Ethics advice: “Well, if the budget is going to balance itself, sure Bill what does a million or eight between you and the taxpayers matter, just launder it through a numbered company.”

  9. I can the Truedough syndicate burning out an ethics commissioner early – can’t you hardly wait to see who they appoint – maybe an accountant with a white cane and guide dog.

  10. I can see Jean Chretien at home screaming,”da dumb leetle fuque” at the TV screen.Under Our Jean, the political version of Wile E.Coyote, it took ten years for things to get this bad,Trudeau has set a new record!
Trudeau is as subtle as bull moose in rut, he just may succeed in defeating his own re-election chances if he keeps this up.
Allah almighty,I hope Scheer of the Canadian blue elite Party is up to the job.

  11. At least this blatant corruption is exclusive to conflict of interest, graft, money laundering etc… just Liberals being gangsters, just adorable. Imagine the Media “outrage” if Crazy Bill had ordered a 16 dollar orange juice or if he had done nothing wrong like Duffy… luckily Crazy Bill is just a regular Librano gangster so the Media aren’t very upset and they never will be… just stay away from the orange juice Bill or the Media will be calling you corrupt and out of touch and that you should resign. The corrupt corporate Media are going to have a tough time getting their candidate PM Dumbshit re-elected 2019, but I think they’re up for the job… maybe a coalition Government with the racist turban guy…. Socks turbans and selfies, hooray!

  12. But the ethics commissioner is Mary Dawson, who has been in the Liberals pocket since Jr’s freelance speaking gig days. Saw nothing wrong there, with Morneau or any other Liberal either.

  13. What Mike and Sean M said. The media will give a pass to the BBB (Brown Bag bunch).
    $16 orange juice indeed!
