So historically socialist Catalan is fighting for national independence. That right there summarizes European politics. National Socialists and International Socialists are two sides of the same coin. This could get ugly real fast.

The EU ministers will NOT allow Spain’s ONLY cash$$cow flee their pasture. Just imagine the depth of a debtor-nation a Catalonia-liberated Spain would crater-into.
And what is REALLY driving the urgency of Catalonian Independence? It was the Spanish Govt. ATTACK on Messi’s $$$$$. The Spanish Govt. sued Messi for back TAXES, and nearly threw the little magician into a Spanish Prison … thus giving Real Madrid the upper hand in La Liga. Barcelona Fans at Camp Nou will NOT tolerate Govt. interference with their team.

Both France and Germany have given Catalonia’s move for independence the thumbs-down. Spain is not the only EU member state with secessionist regions and the EU is bound by the Treaty of Lisbon:
“The Union shall respect the equality of Member States before the Treaties as well as their national identities, inherent in their fundamental structures, political and constitutional, inclusive of regional and local self-government. It shall respect their essential State functions, including ensuring the territorial integrity of the State, maintaining law and order and safeguarding national security. In particular, national security remains the sole responsibility of each Member State.”

Decades ago I read Orwells ‘Homage to Catalonia’. He fought in the Spanish civil war.
As I recall the Stalinists had a big influence as did the lesser communists and socialists.
