“The science that these guidelines were based on was wrong,” Robert Lustig, a neuro-endocrinologist at the University of California, San Francisco, told Tonic. In particular, the idea that cutting fat from a person’s diet would offer some health benefit was never backed by hard evidence…

absofrigginLUTELY on this one Kate.
this is very much related to the airing of a british series ‘the men who made us fat’. a dietary pioneer was hounded out of the elite circle for saying as much. the food industry handed everything over to the self servers and propagandists and lobbyists who proceeded to foist lots of sugar in the form of ‘high fructose corn syrup’ and voila, 2 generations later a third of ‘mercuns are OVERWEIGHT.
settled science. science is NEVER ‘settled’. just last night I was watching an episode of ‘through the wormhole’ discussing such ‘absolutes’ as the speed of light. one astrophysicist found out there was an unusual ‘shift’ in distant light spectra *depending on what direction in the sky you look*. how’s THAT for ‘settled science’?
Absolutely history buff; Also thanks Kate; I find my enjoying one or two pieces of Dark Chocolate and having a spoon of Peanut Butter when a snack is wanted has added to life’s enjoyment & longevity ?
Yes,the only “settled” science is climate science.I know this because Al Gore has made another mockumentary about inconvenient truths.
I’ve saved this article and will use it whenever I encounter another “no fat!” fanatic, and will no longer feel any guilt in using cream in my coffee. My brother still uses 1% milk in his coffee, which makes it taste like dishwater minus the soap.
Science, for sale at any price.
America is FAT (and the rest of the world is catching up) … because of success. Capitalistic, and agricultural success. Transportation success. Refrigeration success. Food chemistry success. We eat too much wonderful-tasting food … because we can. Because tasty food is so easy to get … $cheap$. Demonizing “the sugar industry”, the “cattle association”, or Ben, or Jerry … misses the fundamentals of our dietary excess … which is simply that we are swimming in wonderful fabulous life-giving food. God bless Capitalism!!! God bless the Free Market!!! God Bless the food chemists that invented “cool ranch flavored Doritos”
but
Just as Capitalism needs restraint (e.g. against monopolistic market control) … so too do we need to control our OWN excessive eating. WE need to become more intelligent and use discretion with our diets. WE don’t really need scientific studies to understand that eating Hagendaz ice cream and crisps all day isn’t going to end well for us. But it tastes sooooo good going in. Freedom requires discipline and restraint. It doesn’t require restraint of commerce or industry. Making tasty things is not the problem. We are the problem. Just because some schlub sits in his mammas basement eating crisps all day while playing video games … doesn’t mean that we need to change our economic system to “accommodate his/her needs. We don’t need Bernie Sanders Socialism to buy all these schlubs their own apartments. And we don’t need Michelle Obama taking away their chocolate milk. The schlubs in our society need to get off their fat, lazy, asses and stop force-feeding themselves junk food all day. And if they can’t muster the internal fortitude ? Well … then THEY have decided where to place themselves on the bell curve. Hey ! Someone has to a LOSER ! Congrats schlub ! You’re a LOSER !
Yudkin knew that back in the 60s. Canada published Ancel Keys as it’s food guide anyway. Old news.
Low carb/high healthy fat/moderate protein, plus intermittent fasting, also reverses type 2 diabetes.
That’s been known for a hundred years, but the allopathic medical establishment prefers to treat symptoms. They tell type 2 patients they’ll only gradually get worse. An out and out lie, but much more profitable. They even give insulin for type 2, which is like giving alcohol to cure an alcoholic’s shakes. Stops the symptoms, doesn’t do anything for the disease.

Coffee, 2 tablespoons coconut oil for the MCT’s, whipping cream, blend to a froth. Yum! That’s how it’s done!
For anyone interested search “keto diet” or “keto lifestyle”. Fuelling your body with ketones rather than glucose gives you metabolic stability and weight loss, incredible mental clarity, and starves tumours into nothingness. But our governments and military-industrial-pharmaceutical complex certainly don’t want the masses having any of those.
I just Might try that in my morning coffee – have cream – have coconut oil – and by George, coffee too..!!
does Baileys count..??
Ever noticed how most ‘science’ is little more than old wives tales?
you want to cure the porker disease, just make airline seats smaller:-)))
A definitive NO to the Baileys…too sugary! Try it as prescribed, the yummy factor is there.
My hardest change was giving up the beer, which is basically liquid bread. Sleemans Clear with 2g of carb per bottle, but still 4% alcohol is current choice.
excess calories will always make one fat unless extreme physical activity is part of your life.
100% true, but inbound calories are not all the same. Some inbound calories are packaged in a way to satiate your hunger, others are empty calories that leave you wanting more and more and more…
bingo !!
fwiw, I weighed myself this morning. 182.5 lbs. hasnt been that sinse the early 90s. whut dun ‘appen dere buff? ummm, for starters, I take my bull mastiff for long walks and since the beginning of the year CUT BACK on my eating. for instance, some days I skip lunch completely. and because of elevated blood sugar, I have cut out huge amounts of sugar. I dont even crave the stuff anymore.
thats just the beginning. I plan to take another course audit at the local unibersity in september and hit the gym any. time. I. want.
my GP complimented me on tuesday for bicycling to his office way out in the sticks. yehaaa! I love retirement !!!!
That begs the question. How are you defining “excess” other than by saying it is that amount that makes you fat. So you are saying, Eating “the amount of calories that always makes one fat” always make one fat.
Bid to write commercials for Coca-Cola. You might find the misrepresentation claim against Coca-Cola and the American Beverage Association filed in the District of Columbia last week to be interesting reading.
