I flew into YYC last night. This morning, I was exploring Calgary a little. I think it’s safe to say that the city is no longer a “conservative” metropolis.
I met some longtime friends for breakfast. Very nice people both. Very well educated both. But, during breakfast, when one of my friends expressed exasperation about the “craziness during Covid”, especially in regard to the health & welfare of her grandchildren, I chimed in, “Oh, you mean even more so now after the Anthony Fauci debacle?” She shut me down in record time with: “Yeah, we complete disagree with you about that so let’s not talk about it.”
I did, of course, say no more because long ago I realized that each person had to figure things out for themselves, but I got to thinking ever since, how on earth could anyone defend Anthony “Fifth Amendment” Fauci after what was revealed this past summer?!? I ask that question sincerely and simply do not understand how anyone could. But in the interest of fairness, I asked Grok.

Calgary was never that conservative. Conservative enough to preserve the lovely parts of the old downtown, but progressive enough to build a hypermodern new one. The city’s always had a progressive, even a recklessly progressive, edge to it, and that’s part of its charm.

I’m told that the downtown area of Calgary is a parking nightmare. Did they follow Vancouver’s stupid (and short-lived) lead and attempt to issue building permits *without* sufficient parking stalls? You know…to force people to take transit instead?
From the time I first moved to Calgary the urban population has doubled, and parking in the central business district has not kept pace. I can’t imagine a building not having sufficient parking for their residents, but it would only take an additional few percent to push us over the edge. I rarely drive downtown but often pass through on the way to my daughter’s house, I guess it’s a good thing the drug addicted don’t drive or the chaos would be legendary.
