  3. The French are the French. It doesn’t matter whether they live in Quebec or they live in the mother country. They are illogical children.
    It’s had to believe that their ancestors included mathematicians like:
    – Rene Descartes,
    – Evariste Galois,
    – Pierre de Fermat, and
    – Jean-Baptiste Joseph Fourier;
    scientists such as:
    – Blaise Pascal,
    – Antoine Lavoisier, and
    – Andre-Marie Ampere;
    such noted composers as:
    – Jean-Baptiste Lully,
    – Jean-Phillipe Rameau,
    – Jules Massenet, and
    – Hector Berlioz;
    and authors like:
    – Jules Verne and
    – the Dumas.
    Their ancestors gave us the metric system and intellectuals such as François-Marie Arouet (better known as Voltaire) and Alexis de Tocqueville.
    Their work helped to form and define western civilization.
    It saddens me that I might see all of that come to an end within my lifetime.

    I don’t think it will necessarily get to that. They will pay a very heavy price for their foolishness, sure. But 28% of them voting means that 72% are ready to accept a strongman who will tell them what to do. It will be bloody, it will be messy, it will be ugly but the final outcome is easy to predict. When was the last time an organized Arab force manage to stand toe to toe with a western force?
    And as I said in my original comment, I have little patience for the French and little sympathy towards them. Of all western nations France was the one that most consistently has been undermining The Occident since WWII. At the margin I’d rather it was them who will now fight on their own streets than others.

    (i) At this point my hope is that North America which is still few decades behind Europe will learn from the EUrinal’s experience. (ii) The conflict can be contained to Continental Western Europe and Scandinavia and that UK as well Eastern Europe can weather the storm with relatively little turmoil. Then we can try to rebuilt The Occident.

    Well, nearly 4 million Frenchmen voted for Le Pan than Canadians voted for Turdeau in 2015, so that’s something for them to continue to work with.
    France has had revolutions and civil war many times before and survived. No doubt that once anger over the relentless Muslim invasion coupled with hard Socialist economics of Europe popularizes with more people, there will be cross border uprisings involving many like minded Europeans.
    Le Pen, Geert Wilders, Britain’s UKIP, and Germany’s Alternative für Deutschland are enjoying record popularity and are moving up the Nationalist right wing ranks each new election. European countries like Finland, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, and Switzerland have already gained Nationalist power.
    It takes time and every Muslim atrocity on European soil brings right wing nationalists one step closer to success. As the eventually EU collapses under it’s own Liberal Progressive greed, Canada, Australia and the US will have the opportunity to avoid the same fate, and will if the European experience is bitter enough.

  11. Agreed, it saddens me too. The one thing that all the great men you list have in common is they predate the last century. Unfortunately, the “great” French minds of the twentieth century–Sartre, Foucault, Lyotard, Derrida, Lacan, et al–are largely responsible for the infantilization of a once great nation. Post-modernism is a confused, illogical, self-centered, garbage-can-hash of a philosophy that requires neither thought nor commitment. It’s the type of philosophy that easily accepts contradictory premises and outcomes without any dissonance and it is taught as dogma on every college campus in the western world today.

    Absolutely, my point was Le Pen was 34% of the popular vote and growing. 10.6 million growing voters is nothing to sneeze at when they get pissed off. Yes the communist-lite received 66%, but this is “France” and the changeup is remarkable considering. It’s the continued growth of right wing nationalism around Europe that’s encouraging.

I visited a nuclear power station South of Paris in 1984 that was built in 1960. When I asked where the Uranium was a being obtained, in a Chief Inspector Jacques Clouseau accent the tour guide replied, ”Saskatchewan, in Canada.”
    Lets not forget the Concorde, the Airbus 380, and TGF, what was for years the fastest train in the world.

    I would have wished that a French Nationalist had won, economics notwithstanding.
    For the French people, the French Nation, this was a loss.

  27. Macron’s problem is that he represents everything and therefore represents nothing. It’s hard to see exactly what he can really achieve, given how fractured France is. He essentially won only because Le Pen had to lose; in other words, a large percentage of French voters didn’t vote for Macron; they voted against Le Pen.*
    I can’t help but think of an old line a British Army friend used to use regarding politicians, elections and their promises to the voter:
    “More of the same – only better!”
    * In effect, a reprise of the 2002 campaign between Chirac and Le Pen’s father where the underlying theme was: “Votez escroc, pas fascho!” (Vote for the crook not the fascist!)
