  5. Never liked North American aboriginal art, none of it, but for some reason very much like much of Australian aboriginal art “the expensive stuff”, and have toured many gallery’s around Australia looking at it.
    Never found anything I liked in a price range I was willing to pay (by a long mile), some of the paintings in Darwin galleries, the good ones averaged $30,000.00 AUD and up…………

    99% of “Native Art” I’ve seen shows about as much talent as finger painting in grade school,with the rare and occasional Native artist who does good work,just like in every other ethnic group.
    Just because you are Native,it doesn’t mean you are also an artist.
    I wonder how much Native Art is purchased by the federal government to be stored in warehouses.

  14. I’ve had up the ying-yang with this Indigenous/Aboriginal people thingy. The descendants of the first immigrants to this continent have made a concentrated effort to ‘lay’ this early migration into a guilt trip on the rest of later migrants. Bleeding heart do-gooders have latched onto this idea and created an industry around it. The first migrants to North America were stuck in a time warp and if it hadn’t been for expansionism by European nations they’d still be nomadic hunter/gatherers. So give me a break when they bring up cultural appropriation. They want their cake and expect me to pay for it because why, exactly? Maybe it’s time we took a hard nose look at cultural appropriation. A culture, tribe, clan, society can only exist if it is strong enough to defend itself. If it can’t defend itself then it has to assimilate into the stronger culture that dominates it or it will become extinct. History is replete with examples. The Indigenous/Aboriginal title should be replaced with something more explanatory like First Settlers, and instead of looking for handouts they might start taking some responsibility in creating a society that we all should be proud of.

  16. Art, in order to reach an audience must speak to one’s personal philosophy and values. The artist infuses his/her values and philosophy into their work. That is why some artists succeed while others fail, they reach an audience that ‘gets it’. Modernism as never appealed to me. I look at it and can’t figure out what it is?
    For example a number of years ago the Vancouver Art Gallery displayed a piece owned by I think the National Gallery. It consisted of 3 square blocks painted orange and blue. I’m going by memory here but I think the orange blocks were on the outside and the blue in the middle. Think flag.
    Audiences were perplexed. Some wisenheimer suggested perhaps it had been displayed upside down? People didn’t get it. It didn’t resonate with their personal values and philosophy. There were those that came away uplifted because the flag ‘spoke to their soul’. Maybe, but not mine and many thought likewise.
    When I think indigenous art I think Charlie Russell. He painted Indians in their most flattering. He respected them and liked them. It shows in his depictions.
    I appreciate the paleolithic stick man for what he is. Sure, it was art from the time but to continue on and persist with that form millions of years later is to deny Darwin.

  17. Cultures borrow ideas and objects from each other and adapt them for their own use. It’s been that way throughout history.
    If we’re supposed to be upset about cultural appropriation, I guess we’ll need to give up using paper, silk, and magnetic compasses. After all, weren’t they invented in China? How about growing wheat? It apparently originated in Mesopotamia.
    I’m sure you get the picture about how ridiculous this argument is.
    On the other hand, I’m reminded of a scene in one of the later episodes of The Sopranos. Tony’s family is eating supper and someone, I think it was his daughter Meadow, said that the Chinese invented pasta. Tony scoffed and asked how they could invent something that one needs a fork to eat. Tony Soprano, anthropologist at large….

  20. Cultures share / travel / migrate and influence each other. Jazz, for instance, is a matter of African rhythms / songs / stories played on European instruments. Everyone wins, everyone celebrates, unless there is a nasty little censor claiming “appropriation.”

  21. I have been told by a native that it is wrong for non-natives to teach workshops on how to make a dream catcher. Dream catcher = string tied and looped onto either a metal ring (made in china) or a stick tied in a circle, possibly embellished with feathers and or beads(made in china).

  26. Jay Soule should have a DNA test and to the extent that he is not 100% native Indian, he must remove that much of his art from public display. Racism is chemical determinism and native indians have farmed that pathology much more successfully than they ever farmed the soil.

    You should look at Solutrean “hypothesis”….it’s becoming more mainstream as DNA and Archeology evolves.
    Tongue in cheek though – the “first immigrants” is a bit of a misnomer, in that they were never the first to join the Canadian Nation as all other immigrants did, many still haven’t by their own reckoning. It’s sort of like calling the Vikings the second immigrants.
    As far as the “Nation of Canada” is concerned the English & French were the first immigrants, everyone else followed in turn including all Aboriginals those that work and pay into the system and those that take freely from it.
    Regardless Archeology and DNA evidence is already starting to prove that the current Bearing Land Bridge “immigrants” from Asia were not the first. They who eventually became the “Clovis” peoples absorbed an earlier North Atlantic culture hailing from Western Europe 21,000 – 17,000 years ago. At least along the North Eastern parts of the US & Canada. The Clovis spear-point technology is a clear knockoff of Solutrian technology found in layers above many older digs. Clovis then spread westward and south.
    Anyway the “First Peoples” Science is NOT settled.

  28. Not just jazz, but the entire city of New Orleans is based on cultural appropriation. Creole, African, French, Spanish, Cajun and many others all contributed. With cultural appropriation you get cultural centres like New Orleans and Montreal. Without it you wind up with Toronto.

Further to my rant above perhaps some of the more enlightened commenting here can explain this conundrum to me, something that has been bothering me for a great many years, ever since PET was PM. If all cultures are equal then why are we living in a system where one culture has special privileges? Once you can explain that then you can explain why we are going out of our way to make exceptions for other cultures?

  37. Dreamcatchers — another way to part unsuspecting people who wish to seem cultural (I guess) from their money. Springfest at the local college used to be full of these sort of trinket booths (although in fairness, some of of the booths had some nice artwork by locals).
    PS. Part Native, never even heard of a dreamcatcher until I got older…and then it was “some potsmoking hippie thing they buy at truck stops”.
    Now, I could see where Granny and great-Granny might have gotten upset with being lumped in with “potsmoking hippies”…that I’ll grant them.
