Reader James notes via email – CPAWS is taking our Government to court.
The Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society (CPAWS) has filed a lawsuit against federal environment minister Catherine McKenna, asserting that the Government of Canada is not following its own rules about protecting caribou.
Under the Species at Risk Act, once critical habitat for a species has been identified, the minister has 180 days to take action.
“Boreal woodland caribou’s critical habitat was identified and publicly posted in October of 2012. Much of the habitat is on non-federal lands. Though we know that much of the boreal caribou critical habitat remains unprotected more than four years later, there have been no reports describing what is being done to address any protection gaps,” CPAWS Quebec executive director Alain Branchaud said in a statement.
Much of that habitat is in oil and gas development regions across Canada.
Of course it is. James adds – “And a peek at the CRA site tells us why: CPAWS non-receipted revenue from out-of-country sources ($893,596) and revenue received from other charities ($1,045,007) vastly exceeds the relatively miserly federal donation: $166,092. Get out our cheque-book Justin – make it all go away.”

The only way to recreate a population of woodland caribou in Alberta is pick an area of old growth forest, totally eliminate wolves, and kill all the moose, deer, and elk to discourage wolves from hunting. Caribou are a species begging for extinction. The way they avoided predation was a population thin enough to discourage large numbers of predators. The wolves starved between kills.
Is there a Caribu equivalent to “Beefalo” ? Hell, I rarely ever eat a “hamburger” anymore … it’s always “Beefalo” for me ! So much healthier ! Time to cross breed the Black Angus with Bambi ? Reindeer are the same thing as Caribu ? Right ? Just another name for Arctic deer who never migrated south ? If the First Nations peoples do the cross breeding … wouldn’t THAT make it environmentally acceptable ? Time for the First Nations to become … “All cattle” … and …”less ceremonial headdress”.
And what out-of-country plyers are giving it money? Foreign bribes to local “charities” should be stopped.
Woodland caribou might be one of the stupidest animals out there. scar is correct in that the best way to preserve the animal is to eliminate the predatory wolf population. Traditional land users only hunt this animal for target practice because the meat tastes terrible.
“And what out-of-country plyers are giving it money?”
Oh, the usual suspects. The various foundations that bring you nature shows on PBS.
Temagami is very familiar with this organization. Through misinformation and powerful media friends they helped destroy our local economy.
Taking lessons from the EPA?
After all the Li-ber-alls are guaranteed to wilfully lose in court, enabling an extra large settlement to their activist comrades.
A real government, with the countries interests at heart, would strip these A holes of their charitable status and ban them.
Read a glowing infomercial in my local paper recently, they believed they were describing a government biologist and member of WWF..
All I read was”Activist”.
If the government can lose a herd of 750,000 cariboo, the dumb beastie buggers really don’t need protecting if they can hide nearly a million from the government just wandering around and munching on whatnot.
I’d like to see that many tax payers hide themselves and their money. That would be worth a line of newsprint. Not that I’d read it.
