Why this blog?
Until this moment I have been forced to listen while media and politicians alike have told me "what Canadians think". In all that time they never once asked.
This is just the voice of an ordinary Canadian yelling back at the radio -
"You don't speak for me."

http://americanfreepress.net/japanese-journalist-accuses-israel-of-fukushima-sabotage/
According to Yoichi Shimatsu, a former editor of Japan Times Weekly, these nuclear materials were shipped to the plant in 2007 on the orders of Dick Cheney and George W. Bush, with the connivance of Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert. The shipment was in the form of warhead cores secretly removed from the U.S. nuclear warheads facility BWXT Plantex near Amarillo, Texas.
In an even more explosive charge, the journalist says that 20 minutes before the Fukushima plant’s nuclear meltdown, Israel was so upset with Japanese support for a Palestinian declaration of statehood that it double-crossed Japan by unleashing the Stuxnet virus on the plant’s computers. The virus hampered the shutdown, leading to fallout from a section of the plant housing uranium and plutonium retrieved from the warheads supplied in 2007.
Yep, blame the Joos.
It was a controversial war from the start.
The invasion of the Falklands was a last attempt by a failing military junta to gain popular support. The defeat of the Argentinian forces likely hastened the country’s return to democracy a year and a half later.
There were allegations that Margaret Thatcher used the invasion to improve her standing prior to the upcoming UK election. A British victory would have demonstrated her abilities as a national leader.
Then there was the sinking of the cruiser General Belgrano by the submarine HMS Conqueror. There appears to still be some dispute as to whether the order to torpedo the ship was even legal as it may have been outside of British territorial waters.
Military forces around the world were watching the conflict with interest. The British Harrier was shown to be an effective combat aircraft and was used the U. S. Marine Corps. The French Exocet demonstrated its capabilities as an anti-ship missile. Designers likely re-considered the use of aluminium for building ships after what happened to HMS Antelope and HMS Ardent.
As for Argentina’s claim that the Falklands were part of its territory, there were some who thought it legitimate. A few years after the war was over, I spoke with someone who, as I recall, was originally from Paraguay and he supported that idea.

But when the comedy is played out there emerges the fact that a debit and an exceedingly burdensome debit has been created. For the payment of interest it becomes necessary to have recourse to new loans, which do not swallow up but only add to the capital debt. And when this credit is exhausted it becomes necessary by new taxes to cover, not the loan, BUT ONLY THE INTEREST ON IT. These taxes are a debit employed to cover a debit …. (Hence THE CRY TO BALANCE THE BUDGET!)

Every war is always controversial. It was war fought in self interest with no bs wrapped around it. No nation building, no making world safe for democracy, none of it. Take the islands back because they are ours and no turd world tinpot upstart will dare challenging us without a decisive response, period.
As for Argentinian claims and someone from Paraguay supporting them, members of failed turd world shitholes often band together. Argentinians were supported by Brazil, Peru and others paid them lip service. All the more reason to spank them hard.
“…whether the order to torpedo the ship was even legal as it may have been outside of British territorial waters…”
Argentinians declared war, hence all military targets were legal. If Conqueror sneaked into Buenos Aires harbor and fired her torpedoes there as long as she engaged a warship it would have been legal.

Except there was no formal declaration of war.
Any Argentinian vessel or aircraft inside the exclusion zone was considered fair game. International law recognized and accepted that. However, since the Belgrano might not have been, the legality of Conqueror‘s action was subject to question.
If I remember correctly, the controversy arose when the Belgrano was spotted near the edge of the exclusion zone and Conqueror notified Whitehall. The sub was ordered to fire, even though the other ship’s exact location wasn’t clearly established.
The question was whether or not that order came from Thatcher.
“There appears to still be some dispute as to whether the order to torpedo the ship was even legal as it may have been outside of British territorial waters.”
To eliminate confusion – the objective in war is to kill your enemy not blow them. Of course it was outside territorial waters. In war you don’t have to warn your enemy or allow him a chance to surrender. A good warning to idiots that there are consequences to attacking the British Empire. They don’t teach history in Argentina?
The Falklands was the last war where they just went for the win. That was immediately before the British nation was finally neutered by the Europeans.
A comment that could have been made in Canada.
“The unvoiced tragedy behind Miranda Devine’s excellent article is that in the 42 years since Whitlam’s government blasted Australia off course, we have had a cumulative 23 years of conservative government. In all that time very, very few conservative politicians have had the intellect, conviction or courage to say what Miranda just said, let alone do something about it when in government. Even more tragic is that in all the years since December 2nd, 1972, when Whitlam and the Left began their systematic replacement of the Judaeo-Christian foundation of our society with destructive Leftism, the custodians of that foundational creed – our mostly invisible church leaders – have offered no resistance. If anything, they have been cheer leaders of the Left.
Well done, Miranda, for doing what our conservative politicians and church leaders won’t do: their job.’

It was a controversial war from the start.
It was a moral and just war for the British, not so much for the Argies.
There were allegations that Margaret Thatcher used the invasion to improve her standing prior to the upcoming UK election. A British victory DID have demonstrated her abilities as a national leader.
Then there was the sinking of the cruiser General Belgrano by the submarine HMS Conqueror.
Right on! Perfectly good action which ironically saved the lives of thousands of other Argie sailors as their fleet stayed away from then afterwards.

Precisely.
@ B:
“Except there was no formal declaration of war”
Argentinians sent troops to combat and occupied British land. That is war, period.
On 15 December 1989, the Panamanian general assembly passed a resolution declaring that the actions of the United States had caused a state of war to exist between Panama and the United States. On 20 December 1989 the US invaded. The US considered this a declaration of war. However, the US was already on the way. Noriega was bought and paid for by the CIA and he was reneging. Declarations of war are obsolete and are more likely bluster than real.

But there was never a formal declaration of war by the British government like there had been in 1914 and 1939. Yes, I know this is quibbling over terminology and associated legalities but that’s how international law and politics works.
By the way, I was rooting for the Brits because I thought that Argentina was at fault. Seizing South Georgia and the Falklands a violation of British sovereignty and international law. Worse, however, was that the Argentinian soldiers were mainly conscripts who had been poorly equipped. It was as if they weren’t expected to win.
To eliminate confusion – the objective in war is to kill your enemy not blow them. Of course it was outside territorial waters. In war you don’t have to warn your enemy or allow him a chance to surrender.
The war took place in 1982, which was during the Cold War. There were genuine fears that the conflict could escalate beyond simply a dispute arising from a one country’s incursion by one country into another’s territory.
It was no secret that Ronald Reagan supported Thatcher, but there were rumours that the Soviets were backing Argentina.
Each side, therefore, had to conduct themselves carefully.
A formal declaration of war would have outlined what the country in question was going to do and where. Clearly, any enemy presence inside territorial waters or airspace would have been considered a legitimate target.
However, outside of that zone, the matter can become murky. Attacking an enemy vessel in international waters, on the high seas, could be considered an act of piracy and not a legitimate military action. In the case of the sinking of the Belgrano, not only was its location relative to British waters debatable, I believe the direction it was moving was also in question.
I remember that there had been some discussion about whether the ship was heading towards the exclusion zone or away from it. I think that it was moving out to international waters, which was why its sinking was controversial.
the objective in war is to kill your enemy
No, the objective in war is to wound as many of the enemy forces as possible and to destroy their military resources. Caring for a wounded soldier takes 10x the resources of dealing with a dead one. Machines run on fuel, guns run on ammo. Destroying those resources is primary importance. Patton understood this well, and that’s what made him such a formidable foe.
The objective in war is to win.
Something now lost on modern political leaders who would seem to prefer endless military interventions conducted half-heartedly and without clear resolution.
“Worse, however, was that the Argentinian soldiers were mainly conscripts who had been poorly equipped. It was as if they weren’t expected to win.”
The Argentine junta was counting on a “fait accompli”. In other words, the Falklands were a long way from Britain and the British just weren’t going to get a force down here to take them back.
Wrong.
