The virus hampered the shutdown, leading to fallout from a section of the plant housing uranium and plutonium retrieved from the warheads supplied in 2007.

    Military forces around the world were watching the conflict with interest. The British Harrier was shown to be an effective combat aircraft and was used the U. S. Marine Corps. The French Exocet demonstrated its capabilities as an anti-ship missile. Designers likely re-considered the use of aluminium for building ships after what happened to HMS Antelope and HMS Ardent.
    As for Argentina’s claim that the Falklands were part of its territory, there were some who thought it legitimate. A few years after the war was over, I spoke with someone who, as I recall, was originally from Paraguay and he supported that idea.

    As for Argentinian claims and someone from Paraguay supporting them, members of failed turd world shitholes often band together. Argentinians were supported by Brazil, Peru and others paid them lip service. All the more reason to spank them hard.

    Any Argentinian vessel or aircraft inside the exclusion zone was considered fair game. International law recognized and accepted that. However, since the Belgrano might not have been, the legality of Conqueror‘s action was subject to question.

  18. If I remember correctly, the controversy arose when the Belgrano was spotted near the edge of the exclusion zone and Conqueror notified Whitehall. The sub was ordered to fire, even though the other ship’s exact location wasn’t clearly established.
    The question was whether or not that order came from Thatcher.

    The Falklands was the last war where they just went for the win. That was immediately before the British nation was finally neutered by the Europeans.

    Right on! Perfectly good action which ironically saved the lives of thousands of other Argie sailors as their fleet stayed away from then afterwards.

  25. On 15 December 1989, the Panamanian general assembly passed a resolution declaring that the actions of the United States had caused a state of war to exist between Panama and the United States. On 20 December 1989 the US invaded. The US considered this a declaration of war. However, the US was already on the way. Noriega was bought and paid for by the CIA and he was reneging. Declarations of war are obsolete and are more likely bluster than real.

    By the way, I was rooting for the Brits because I thought that Argentina was at fault. Seizing South Georgia and the Falklands a violation of British sovereignty and international law. Worse, however, was that the Argentinian soldiers were mainly conscripts who had been poorly equipped. It was as if they weren’t expected to win.

    The war took place in 1982, which was during the Cold War. There were genuine fears that the conflict could escalate beyond simply a dispute arising from a one country’s incursion by one country into another’s territory.
    It was no secret that Ronald Reagan supported Thatcher, but there were rumours that the Soviets were backing Argentina.
    Each side, therefore, had to conduct themselves carefully.
    A formal declaration of war would have outlined what the country in question was going to do and where. Clearly, any enemy presence inside territorial waters or airspace would have been considered a legitimate target.
    However, outside of that zone, the matter can become murky. Attacking an enemy vessel in international waters, on the high seas, could be considered an act of piracy and not a legitimate military action. In the case of the sinking of the Belgrano, not only was its location relative to British waters debatable, I believe the direction it was moving was also in question.
    I remember that there had been some discussion about whether the ship was heading towards the exclusion zone or away from it. I think that it was moving out to international waters, which was why its sinking was controversial.

Caring for a wounded soldier takes 10x the resources of dealing with a dead one. Machines run on fuel, guns run on ammo. Destroying those resources is primary importance.
