I have often pointed out to liberals that they are welcome to voluntarily send more money to the government treasury. They are welcome to forgo any charitable donation receipts. As far as I know no one has ever sent the government more money than they were compelled to do so.
It has come to the point in this province that you have 2 options to vote for. Bad or worse. Brad Wall in my opinion has been a real disappointment financially and conservatively. Yes, he is better than the alternative NDP but that is kind of like being the smartest employee at Sarcan. I know a lot of people in my area will be holding their nose when they vote Sask. Party next time.
For Ontarians, the income tax forms include an area where you can “donate” extra cash (ie. pay even more taxes than required) to help the government with its essential duties – chief among which seems to be turning your dollars into toilet paper. They even have a list of tick boxes, so you can select exactly which black hole you’d like to toss your cash into for destruction. One wonders who’d be stupid enough to actually do this, but then, one recalls that there’s an outfit called Bullfrog Power in Ontario, which will sell you certifiably “green” power at rather more than the already exorbitant rates that the Ontario government charges. Somehow, there seems to be enough of these virtue-signalling morons around to make the company a viable concern. Go figure.

It has always been like that in every democracy, everywhere. As Winston Churchill pointed out, it’s the worst form of government, except for all the others that have been tried. And as I have often pointed out, the vital benefit of democracy isn’t good government, it’s the facility of kicking out a government that is too bad to be tolerated anymore, without resorting to bayonets and the gallows.
The “vital benefit” of democracy, alas, all too often turns into the same old same old, except with a different set of politicians at the helm. this is because of the main danger of democracy, to wit:

Re: federal budget:
– they continue to misspend our money with zero to show for it; another $25B+ deficit, with 11 cents on the dollar when and if they “invest” OPM lucre.
– they blame economic woes, despite US uptick, on corporations and tell them to pay more, more, more, except their favoured cronies of course.
– they will not start attacking the principal residence (PR) exemption by forced reporting of PR sales, already started for tax year 2016.
– as they sink deeper into their crony I mean social engineering abyss, the rich will be required to carry more load, as Bill Clinton said, give a “little” more.
– the rich are now redefined as homeowners with suites in their places, whipsawed into losing part of their PR exemption, plus higher capital gains taxes.
– count on more exemptions to exemptions as the out of control spending and borrowing veers wildly towards the fiscal wall.
– that’ll be a boost to the housing market and encourage home ownership. Yes, crushing the value real assets is good public policy. They help, we lose.
– after all there aren’t enough actual rich people to fund their scheming and lording over us
– the big lie continues – fake deficits turn into structural deficits; statists double down on their interventionist failures; fake recessions self fulfill.
– you’ve got to love their “Infrastructure Bank” where suddenly the private sector ponies up 80% of the funding (or is that CPP?).
– That would be OK if they did it right; let the private contractors take the risk with no bail out possibilities and reap the reward.
– no, that’s what Trump does, use common sense. That’s not “what Canadians want.” It’s better to subsidize failure.
– meanwhile, our productivity tanks and inflation bites, with unemployment instead of labour shortages due to still healthy but indebted boomers.
– the Echos await their tax increases aka current deficits, as their income, homes and investments become the onion to be peeled by statists.
– by then everybody will be crying from the odour of the gilded statist class, the new regents, where equality trumps freedom & our money is theirs.
– now with Harper dispatched they raise any bogeyman – Trump, with as yet unfulfilled protectionism, and rescue from other fabricated hobgoblins.

IMO most Western societies are hooped when it comes to budgetary issues. From an opinion in the Financial Post yesterday, for all the cutting that Pres. Trump called for in his budget, it only touched a portion of the 30% that represents ‘discretionary’ spending. The other 70% is locked into pensions, social services, Medicare, Medicaid etc and therefore can’t really be touched without invoking a firestorm of criticism. Without significant cuts the budgetary pressures will only worsen.
I think the same logic applies to the rest of the West: we’re so underfunded in ‘non-discretionary’ areas and long in debt that many are tottering on the edge of the abyss.

The Premier is in a tough position largely due to circumstances beyond his control. We all know what a downturn in the markets for oil, potash and uranium can do to a resource based economy such as that of Saskatchewan. Regardless of what is contained in the budget, Mr. Wall is in a no-win situation. Those who wail and gnash their teeth over the fact that money was not put aside during the good times would have been the first ones to cry if they didn’t get a new school or their highway wasn’t resurfaced. Those who loudly bemoan modest salary cuts to government employees are simply being selfish and unrealistic, ignoring the fact that a certain amount of belt-tightening is necessary during tough times whether it be in the government, private companies or the household. Public service unions will go into fits of apoplexy regardless of the budget’s contents simply because the “natural governing party” is not running the show in Regina. And the media (see Murray Mandryk) will make the inevitable and highly inaccurate comparison to the final years of the Grant Devine era and will portray the deficit as apocalyptic while ignoring the financial mess that Trudeau has overseen in Ottawa.
And we all know that, regardless of what the budget contains, the NDP will do what they do best … shriek and yelp hysterically without offering viable alternatives other than raising taxes.
Premier Wall is not perfect but he is by miles the best provincial leader in this country. Check out Notley or Wynne for comparisons. He had the backbone to tell Trudeau thanks but no thanks to a carbon tax. For the most part, he has resisted succumbing to the “green” derangement that has inflicted his counterparts.
So let’s cut the guy a little slack and Saskatchewan will come out of this tempest in a teapot quite nicely.
People still bother voting Sask party? I gave that up years ago. I will not participate in another election, till there is someone who will stop unreliable power. Not slow it down. Not try to make it work. It must be stopped, and it’s got to be someone actually willing to say it publicly.

The hospitality industry is one of the few areas of the economy that follows the ideals of capitalism.
No unions and you are totally at the mercy of the buying public. Long story short, you serve what the public doesn’t want and your business fails and closes.

Nigel Wright did. I was always appalled that he was not given his money back since it was determined that giving the money to Duffy was not legal, and ultimately that Duffy’s expenses were acceptable under the loose rules. Nigel should be given his money back.
Well said. Wall was between a rock and a hard place as far as provincial revenue is concerned. It is not often that so many revenue streams are in the doldrums with no increase in sight. Even oil has dropped off again after seemingly recovering. Since it is fairly early in Wall’s current mandate I would have liked to see more reduction in the size of government and number of crown corporations.

When all is said and done, it wasn’t all that draconian and I think that, given today’s economic realities, most can live with it. I do have some sympathy for the STC employees but it made absolutely no sense to keep the bus company on life support year after year especially when considering that government should not own or operate a bus company in the first place. Hopefully a private carrier will step in and fill the void, albeit a small one. As for the crown corporations …. these are sacred cows and rightly or wrongly, you mess with them at your political peril. So long as they perform a useful purpose, unlike the NDP’s Spudco, leave them be.

Only a socialist scammer would still believe that climate change is primarily caused by CO2. Read their juvenile white paper on climate change and it is easy to see it was concocted to justify wasting millions on carbon capture & sequestration. I call it Sask Party’s Spudco. Think about the millions wasted on buying land at inflated prices for the GTH.
I suggested they introduce right-to-work legislation to allow employees to op out of unions. Well that didn’t go over well at all to the socialist Sask Party. Public sector unions should be disbanded. They hold tax payers at gun point. Wall in many ways is like Harper. Missed opportunities everywhere to correct the mess the left has got us into. I say it is time to clean house and get a true conservative leader for the Sask Party.
Also I often ask myself “why are we still a member of this thing?” This thing I refer to is Canada.

Provincially, I was a PC since 1975, there were no elected PCs in Sask from the time I was 18 until 1975; the right was the Liberal Party of Saskatchewan. I’ve always supported the Sask Party since they were first organized, until today.
Today is the last day I support Wall and the Sask Party.
No NDP government have ever screwed up the finances of this province like Devine and Wall have. I forgave Devine because there were many factors such as drought and North American wide recession that led to deficit. Devine, in spite of all, always supported rural communities.
Wall has no excuse except that he had to contend with lower oil prices. Agricultural commodities on the other hand have never been better and for such a long period of time. Add to that the advantages of low fuel prices for all types of ag and construction (etc) industries.
I hope they run a PC member in this riding next election, or I spoil my ballot. And what really ticked me off the most was shutting down SPC at a time when our rural communities are filled with seniors, aging farmers, business people, oil field workers, the very people who built this province, who now have no way of getting to the city for medical appointments, and because the foreign doctors don’t let them drive home after their exams. Wall was too busy to watch over STC because he was mesmerized with the Transportation Hub that was essentially built for the city of Regina. For years, STC was the best courier service we had in small towns and villages. The freight paid for the passenger side for many years.
It was bad management Mr. Wall, nothing else.

I can think of reasons to be angry with the Sask party but that policy is not one of those reasons.

Actually I was referring to provincial crowns. In answer to your question … absolutely none.

Our family owned a farm supply business, a service station and a dealership in SW Sask. STC always hauled our freight from Regina, Saskatoon etc. We had 5 day a week service.
When Wall was elected, he cut the service down to 3 days a week, however STC still provided Tues-Thurs freight service with a small truck and trailer, but no passenger bus. That’s when income began to drop for the line.
Once he had screwed the freight service up, then he went after the passengers. People from all over SW Sask begged to keep the bus running to small places, because of seniors who had no other way of getting to the city, mostly for medical reasons.
About three years ago, a delegation (all seniors except one) from the Shaunavon–Eastend-Ponteix-Gravelbourg region went to Regina and pleaded with the minister responsible for STC to provide three runs a week. They were ridiculed at the legislature.
STC was bought and paid for by the people of Saskatchewan. There were no problems with it until Wall arrived. The freight service more than paid for the runs. Had Wall managed the deal properly, it could have been sold to a private entity. He was too busy with the Transportation Hub. Why was he killing STC while supporting the Transporation Hub?? Why was the government not letting private enterprise deal with the HUB? A deal that will cost him the next election.

For years, STC was the best courier service we had in small towns and villages. The freight paid for the passenger side for many years.

Our family owned a farm supply business, a service station and a dealership in SW Sask. STC always hauled our freight from Regina, Saskatoon etc. We had 5 day a week service.
When Wall was elected, he cut the service down to 3 days a week, however STC still provided Tues-Thurs freight service with a small truck and trailer, but no passenger bus. That’s when income began to drop for the line.
Once he had screwed the freight service up, then he went after the passengers. People from all over SW Sask begged to keep the bus running to small places, because of seniors who had no other way of getting to the city, mostly for medical reasons.
About three years ago, a delegation (all seniors except one) from the Shaunavon–Eastend-Ponteix-Gravelbourg region went to Regina and pleaded with the minister responsible for STC to provide three runs a week. They were ridiculed at the legislature.
STC was bought and paid for by the people of Saskatchewan. There were no problems with it until Wall arrived. The freight service more than paid for the runs. Had Wall managed the deal properly, it could have been sold to a private entity. He was too busy with the Transportation Hub. Why was he killing STC while supporting the Transporation Hub?? Why was the government not letting private enterprise deal with the HUB? A deal that will cost him the next election.

To Anonymous: If STC is like any other Transit Commission they all loss money Grey Hound across Canada stopped all passenger carry TO SMALLER TOWNS about the time STC did and only has small truck and trailer parcel service twice a week.
