  5. When I was much younger, we regularly visited a Ukrainian family.
    One day, I looked at a head and shoulders picture of the father in his WWII uniform.
    It was not until much later that I discovered the two bars on his collar meant that he had fought for the Waffen SS.
    And, in the city I live in, there is a Ukrainian centre with a bust of an apparently national hero. Turns out he was the leader of the Waffen SS.
    My own experience somewhat helps me understand why Russia is wary of what’s happening in today’s Ukraine. Whether neo-Nazis are. in fact, now running the Ukrainian government, I have no clue, but to understand what’s happening, no historical fact can be discounted.
    Now, this man’s daughter cannot be held accountable for the fact her father, who in fact fought for Nazi Germany and historically was a death squad that carried out much of the Jewish slaughter ordered by the Fuehrer, believed Ukraine could gain independence by siding with Adolf, much like Freehand cannot be held accountable for what her grandfather did.
    I know this because my mother lived in Minsk, Belarus, during the war. She told a story of seeing soldiers in German uniforms speaking Ukrainian. Shortly afterwards, Jews in the city were rounded up and shot.
    There were horrible things done 70 years ago, but to assign guilt to the children of people who made an unfortunate choice, much less their grandchildren, would be a mistake.

  9. Freeland covered up the fact that her grandfather was an enthusiastic nazi. She knew his background and whitewashed it. Yes the Russians are now exposing her. Those are the pitfalls of poking the bear.
    She has now exposed Canada to a ruskie backlash that could end badly. It may also end poorly for her.

  12. Any Ukrainians fighting with or alongside the Germans were fighting for the Ukraine. Labeling them Nazis is Russian propaganda.

  13. One reason was that there were a significant number of Ukrainians of German ancestry. This goes back to the time of Czarina Catherine the Great.
    She was Prussian by birth and, if I remember my history correctly, she offered land to any Germans who were willing to settle in that region. Many accepted that offer.

  16. Along with JT’s agreeing to take anyone “fleeing the oppressive Trump regime” (to use the words of McLean’s magazine)she is simply trying to continue the anti-Trump campaign up north. As in the days of Trudeau Sr, our policies are entirely determined by the U.S. Whatever they are for, we are against, and whatever they are against, we are for. Apparently, this is Jr’s idea of independent thought – check what Trump is doing, and do the opposite.
    This woman’s bleating is nothing more than American envy. She desperately wants to persecuted by the Russians like Hillary was (in her imagination).

    Yes, putting on Waffen SS uniforms and murdering Jews.
    So, should anybody whose ancestors put on a Waffen SS uniform and killed Jews to gain independence from Moscow be automatically have a guilt by association label placed on them? Not to my way of thinking. They did what they thought they had to do.
    Also noticed another factual error. The author of Holodomir Stalin was not Russian. He was, in fact Georgian. Much like Krushchev was born close to the Ukraine/Russia border and married a Ukrainian woman, so therefore anybody could conclude that his sympathies lay with Ukraine.
    Not all Soviet leaders were Russian, but I have heard the term Moscali, which the independence movement was fighting against … Moscow (the capital of the Soviet Union), not Russians. There’s plenty of brainwashing about the exact motives and actions, but facts speak for themselves.

    NATO is trying to justify the continuation of its bureaucracy.
    Look up the NATO charter and it was formed to counteract the threat of Soviet expansion.
    Since the Soviet Union has not existed for 25 years now, NATO has to invent enemies to keep the military-industrial complex (thanks Dwight Eisenhower), or as it has become to known recently – the deep state – in business.
    Thrashing around for a purpose other than fighting the real threat in the world, ISIL or Daesh, NATO can stay alive while purporting to keep in check the Russian people, who in truth were the real victims of the Soviet state, along with Ukrainians, the eastern bloc nations and the Baltic states.
    But since the capital of Russia is still Moscow, there’s that guilt by association.

  22. This issue about Russia influencing elections is proof of how collectively stupid we are.
    The Freelands and Clintons of the world have managed to convince most media and most Leftists (I repeat myself, I know) that Russia would prefer to have in the US and Canada, parties that 1) produce more oil to compete with Russian oil, 2) more military spending to compete with Russian might, and 3) more rigorous free market economies to further outstrip the ailing Russian economy.
    The reasoning is so bone stupid that it of course makes complete sense to Freeland.
    Russia squealed with delight when the US banned fracking on federal land, withdrew from Eastern European missile defense and sent $150 billion to Putin’s ally Iran so the Russo-Persian project could have its way in the Middle East.
    Do people think Russia is happy now that Trump is backing Israel again?
    Stupidity abounds.

    Russians being victims of soviet union that they brought upon themselves is perfectly fine. In fact, if russians killed each other to the last one it would be their business and a huge net gain for the rest of the world. Russians imposing communism on their neighbors is a crime against humanity perpetrated by subhumans. Russians imposing communism on others is nothing more than a variation of centuries old Siberian Mongol imperialism, this time with a slightly different ideological flavour. Russia is cancer.

    The Poles and Ukrainians have spent a lot of political capital trying to cover their crimes against the Jews.

  27. I have often said, to people that claimed the USSR was on ‘our side’ during WWII, that they and we happened to be fighting Germany at the same time, but that the USSR was never on ‘our side’.

  28. My Grandma’s Ukrainian village in present day Poland welcomed the Nazis in the belief that they were being freed from the hated communists. The Nazis didn’t want their help, but left the men of the village swinging from ropes on tree branches.
    Some people can’t earn, or get, a break. Thank God Grandma’s parents got her out of there in the 20s!

  33. I have witnessed a flock of crows do the same thing with an owl. Also, I have seen a mated pair of crows on their own drive a bald eagle away after it had decided to roost too close to their nest of young. Crows are smart and quite courageous.
    Chrystia Freeland makes as much noise as a flock of crows, but she is not as smart as they are.

    Learn some history kiddo. Poles mobilized on September 1 1939 when they fought against Germans then on Sept 17th they fought against russians as well. Russians remained Germany’s best and most loyal ally until summer 1941. During that time they jointly occupied Poland. During the first two years russians invaded six other countries and occupied either a part of them or the whole. Poles who fell under russian boot and whom russians did not slaughter in extermination camps and gulags, and who did not manage to escape soviet union with General Anders through Syria and Palestine (with what later become Polish Second Corps in the west that fought in North Africa and Italy alongside the western allies) were conscripted into units of Polish communist armed forces and fought on the eastern front. They only fought on the side of russia because not doing so meant execution. There were barely any volunteers. Units of Polish home army on the lands “liberated” by russians often forught against both Germans and russians.

    Getting back to Freeland. In her biography she deliberately glossed over the fact that her grandfather was complicit with the nazis. She attempted to hide a very salient fact. He was a collaborator. It raises the question, what else did she lie about?

  38. The Ukrainians welcomed the Nazis because they thought anything was better than the persecution and starvation they had suffered under Soviet rule but there was antisemitism too.
    Our cousin was married to a Ukrainian guy who was born in a part of Ukraine where antisemitism was bred-in-the-bone.
    He told us the area he was from even had a crude antisemitic saying related to the ‘urge to defecate’;’the Jew(landlord, creditor) is pressuring me’.
    He came to Canada in the early thirties before the holocaust swept through that area and today you are hard-pressed to find any Jews remaining there.

    That’s what made Ukrainians useful idiots. Their inbred hatred of Jews, who were disproportionately large in the Soviet power structure, made it easy for the Fuehrer to recruit them as the de-facto trigger men of the Holocaust in a certain (?) proportion.
    The fact they were cast in the role of murderers for the Third Reich is beyond question.
    Having said that, they did make a historical mistake by ending up on the losing side, but there are better ways to gain independence than to be killing machines/

    Ukrainian inherent anti-semitism is well understood. Even without Nazis encouragement the Ukrainians carried out unspeakable acts against the Jews. Perhaps this very attitude might explain some of Freeland’s grandfathers behaviour.
    A good book on the topic is: Erased by Omer Barton. It gets to the heart of the matter in Ukraine.
