  1. Long ago I lived a wonderful summer at Middlebury College’s Bread Loaf School of English through a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship, which was a real honor for a poor kid off the farm in East Texas. The milieu among faculty and students was genuinely diverse, with reasoned exchanges of ideas all around.
This was not an exercise in fashion: in 1823 Middlebury College was the first institution in the USA to grant a bachelor’s degree to an African-American, and one of the first to become co-educational.
Middlebury College has always resisted tyranny and, as an institution, surely does still, and must reconsider the enrollment status of those anti-intellectual bigots who, through violence, suppress that freedom of inquiry which is the sine qua non of a college.

  3. Wear a mask while rioting. Criminal charges. If the unmasked is a student, expulsion in addition to criminal charges. Any questions?
