The US is out of the TPP. All the lefties who hated it should be cheering President Trump.
I’m thinking that’s false optimism.

I’m thinking that’s false optimism.
Here’s hoping trump does the smart thing and negotiate a unilateral deal with china and then invite the other pacific rim countries to sign on to it.
TPP was a giant (15,000 pages?) managed trade deal . And by managed i mean the big and politically powerful sectors in each country “managed” to get their sectors protected and to heck with the weaker and smaller players. Two examples were Japan’s rice farmers and Canada’s supply management producers.
“All the lefties who hated it should be cheering President Trump.”
What was the Header that used to be on this blog for so long? Oh yeah, I remember.
Pleasing your Enemies does not make them Friends.
Canadians have lot to be nervous about as Trump talks trade deals. We have a pinhead as a PM leading the Canadian team. We have a majority of the population who has no problem with accruing massive public debt. Why is this important? Bigger debt = a weaker negotiating position. The Canadian economy is a price taker which = a weaker negotiating position. Canada’s geography was a strength during the Cold War but that has waned which = a negotiating weakness.
Worse case scenario Canada has to set a more independent trade and foreign policy. Yes, Canada might have to grow up. Canadian debt likely generates much higher inflation, a devalued dollar and most likely a burst housing bubble.
The TPP was touted by Harper and a few of the high rollers in Canadian business, but from the articles I’ve read about it, wouldn’t have done much for us consumers.
As Gord Tulk says, each Country’s favored few were well protected ,especially our Quebec dairy and poultry industries.
http://business.financialpost.com/news/economy/consumers-will-be-winners-in-trans-pacific-partnership-full-text-reveals
The benefits to the consumer are miniscule according to this optimistic report, and some are a joke: “How many tariff free eggs will cdns be allowed? 1 at first, rising to just over 6, *per year*.” And the 10% tax on licorice would have been eliminated over ten years…….
The theory of free trade doesn’t match up to the reality, mainly due to the protection of the powerful interests in each participating country.
One of the great benefits I’ve seen so far from the wonderful Free Trade agreements was the layoff of thousands of workers in the Ontario manufacturing sector that produced most of our major household appliances. An old Canadian made Moffatt washing machine used to last about 15 years, now a new Samsung at four times the price, made in China, lasts about six years with probable expensive repairs within two years.
We’re paying huge prices for very fancy junk that looks like a spaceship and performs like it was conceived by a space cadet. Do I really need 600 wash cycles? All I want is to clean my f***ing laundry!
We were sold a Bill of Goods on free trade, as was America. America’s rust belt didn’t become that due to global warming. It is about time a businessman in the political arena, iow one who isn’t invested in the industry, took along hard look at just what we bought into.
“Canadians have lot to be nervous about as Trump talks trade deals.”
Yes. I don’t think it has yet dawned on a lot of people that just maybe they elected a government ideal for schmoozing with the Obama administration, not the Trump one.
Or to put it in words our Dear Leader and Supreme Drama Teacher might better understand:
“Because it’s 2017.”
Where is the WALL?
This is not a surprise. Given Trump’s unhappiness with the Mexican portion of NAFTA, TPP was obviously done like dinner.
Gord Tulk: I disagree about China. That country is the big economic enemy of the US. A bilateral is even less likely.
Don Morris: Problem is, free trade has never really been implemented, has it? It’s always managed trade as you correctly note and for the reason you state.
CT: All too true. We’re being led by babies wading into the alligator pond.
“Canadians have lot to be nervous about as Trump talks trade deals.”
Some Canadian’s will, but the US & Trump have allot of vested interests in Canada, from Starbucks to Exxon. Canadians are customers and partners, as well as competitors in many things US. It’s not likely Trump will mess with good partnerships for the sake of “Change”.
Of course we do have a modern majority Retarded Class of Canadians who value Progressive ideas over common sense business and economic practices. They will have problems with Trumps cleansing of America, a part of which includes they across the border.
“We have a majority of the population who has no problem with accruing massive public debt.”
Dead on. Two-thirds of the electorate votes Liberal, NDP, or Green. And 40% of voters decided that they wanted a silly little tit to lead them.
Trump will approve the Keystone pipeline AND Saskatchewan will have a price advantage in filling that Pipe, because Alberta has a carbon tax.. The SPUD will most likely try to get Trump to screw Saskatchewan & give priority to Alberta..
The carbon tax has a social engineering agenda that is designed without definable results. They may actually payout more than they take-in…Pay at the front door & leave by the back door with more money. Canada is acting like the Canary in the coal mine that will “not” be destroyed by their Carbon Tax.. This is the bait for the USA to follow suit & destroy it’s wealth
JMHO
What global free trade did lower the cost of living for consumers in North America. Wallmart and Amazon import the bulk of their goods from China and the rest of SE Asia. Yes a job killer at home but bring those jobs back at what cost? Not saying that would be wrong just at what cost.
As a Western Canadian should I care whether my refrigerator comes from Ontario or China?
Yes, if the destruction of industrial areas results in a further leftward swing in the sentiment of the people .
Any day now the left will suddenly find fifty reasons why TPP is a ‘good thing’ and Trump was evil to have dumped it.
“As a Western Canadian should I care whether my refrigerator comes from Ontario or China? ”
If you want it to work, you might try Ontario.
Speaking of hateful leftists, a HUGE surprise from CNN!!
they posted a billion-pixel photo that shows there was more people at Trump’s inauguration than the media is saying. ( would they lie to us? nahhhh )
Possibly as many as for Obama…
take a look,
http://www.cnn.com/interactive/2017/01/politics/trump-inauguration-gigapixel/
It seems Trump is right AGAIN and the media was publishing fake news AGAIN.
About those new washing machines…
I was at a friend’s house and they have one of the nicest model, as I was doing my business I counted how many position each knob has, 2 had 5 positions and 3 had 11
that means that that washing machine can be set to wash your clothes in 33,275 different ways. ( 11 x 11 x 11 x 5 x 5 = 33,275 )
Even an engineer with an IQ of 200 would never ever need that many let alone a housewife who has trouble calculating a 15% tip on a 24 dollar restaurant meal.
I love capitalism but We live in ridiculous times.
Most of the money coming into this country from China falls into one of two categories: proceeds of crime, or funds from a brutal communist dictatorship that will employ any and all means to achieve global dominance.
And that applies whether it’s Vancouver Real Estate, investments in Quebec businesses, purchases of Ontario farmland, donations to the turdo trust fund, or dinners with our silly little tit at $5,000 per plate.
How come all of us boors out in the hinterlands can figure this out and see the dangers, but our anointed classes can’t? Must be a vision thing.
More fun with numbers

Holy Crap! The Monday after inauguration, and this guy is in the office, doing business, getting things done. I admit, he is an odd mix of free market and protectionism, but, like, globalism is working so well, right?
Contrast this with Junior, who after the election was in a Montreal subway shaking hands. Appearances versus Getting Things Done.
I remember all those dire predictions about Americans moving to Canada if Trump won.
Well, he won, and this Canadian is seriously considering Montana as a retirement home.
interesting
.00514 of females hate Trump enough to participate in a march.
and about 5% of that .00514 understands maths enough to know this means their march is totally useless, irrelevant, insignificant.
and since many marched in $ 200 running shoes while holding $ 700 cell phones, it was hard for me to see them as “oppressed” by the patriarchy.
All the lefties who hated it should be cheering President Trump.
Keep in mind that lefty history restarts every morning.
For the very first time in our entire HISTORY … we are getting a template of HOW TO LEAD a Country in a way that supports ALL Americans ! Our Federal Govt. had wandered sooooo far off track, that the people finally had to put a stop to it. Sorry to say it … but it looks like God did deliver the American people out of the wilderness of multiculturalism and globalism. God delivered another (flawed) man to be the leader so desperately needed. Just like the Old Testament. Thank you, God … I am seeing your hand so clearly at work. On the face of things … there is NO WAY a goofy, awkward, poorly-speaking man like this could be elected president. And now … I am seeing that HE, not Hussein, is going to be the TRANSFORMATIVE President. I have a feeling that America, and the whole world is going to get a LOT better … real soon. This President is looking GREAT !
What you have going on is an economic proxy war.
On one side is the UN version of how the world should do business, their current champion is a part time drama teacher who was elected on the premise that he is loved by all the beautiful people will do whatever it takes to demonstrate how much he’s loved.
On the other side is a version of how an economy based on actual capitalism does work. This side is being championed by a billionaire real estate mogul who promoted entrepreneurial risk using media. The irony being that that media opportunity arose from a strike by the screen writers guild. But I digress.
This war is going to be fast and the side that hopes to get by on platitudes and word salad will end up road kill.
Whats the real fear this side of the border?
Its the unstated truth that out of the entire cabinet, there isn’t one of them that I see capable of negotiating any trade deal…particularly the current FA minister.
Trump does not suffer fools gladly. ..especially pretentious ones.
And the Canadian politicians who were vehemently opposed to NAFTA (Liberals) are now panicking because Trump wants to revisit that. So they were lying to us when they told us they were against it when the Mulroney government negotiated it, or they are lying to us now when they act panic stricken because Trump wants to revisit it, or they are just retarded.
Hmmmm, Trudeau is toast, Libs are toast, Canada in trouble…..Simple fact.
Wingo’s, Lefties, Greenies, I truly hope….and expect…will pay price.
Citizens of Canada unfortunate fodder to the fight.
We are, and have gone so far out in the la la land…..reality will hurt us..FACT
I trust and hope that TRUMP will burn down, and totally eviscerate lefty models, regs, groups, etc.
WE all can return to reality and common sense economics….not redistribution of wealth from those who make it, to those….
WHO the flakes want to pay off…..long overdue.
IF we are A casualty….as a Country and People…..we have voted for our penance…and our outcome.
Hug a tree, save a bug, kiss a bunny, save a plant…
But do not put hard working folks, salt of the earth folks on unemployment and breadlines….
DO NOT, TAX and REDISTRIBUTE fees, taxes and other GOV extortion (legal tho immoral, punnative, etc) to layabouts and non contributors.
IN MY DAY….WELFARE AND ASSISTANCE FOLKS WERE REQUIRED TO DO DO, PROVIDE, SERVE THE PUBLIC.
Parks, gardens, roadsides, other common spaces….a trade off for payment from public purse….
Unions etc SUNK this model, activists…too, If you take…should you not provide…contribute??
GOVS are broke, largely through “payments”, etc, etc,…hows about value for money….nothing FOR FREE
Aaaaaargh, where does it stop, Where does it end……
Canada…a country of takers….less and less contributors…….my opinion…..
We WILL get WHAT WE DESERVE…….win lose or draw…
FACT Folks….US creams us….we GET WHAT WE DESERVE…..Can not take without adding value, or adding to common goal of success.
WE are in trouble, much of it..our making….Please Vote for success, and initiative, or live with results.
Unions suck, Socialism sucks, Libs and Left sucks, Individual effort, Free Enterprise, and HARD WORK, SIMPLE ECONOMICS will rule….
Sooner or later….a FACT !!!!!!!!
Pleasing your Enemies does not make them Friends.
YES, and I’d like to see that one back. The current one is uninspiring at best.
We’re paying huge prices for very fancy junk that looks like a spaceship and performs like it was conceived by a space cadet. Do I really need 600 wash cycles? All I want is to clean my f***ing laundry!
My 30 and 40 year old Made in North America Kenmore machines are still running strong and cleaning my laundry. One of them is my original wringer machine. It’s not just washing machines. I believe that most of the digital crap coming from China is specifically designed to fail the day after the warranty dies.
Trump will approve the Keystone pipeline AND Saskatchewan will have a price advantage in filling that Pipe, because Alberta has a carbon tax.. The SPUD will most likely try to get Trump to screw Saskatchewan & give priority to Alberta..
I suspect at the first sign of Trudeau’s typical intransigence that Trump will tell him to go fúck himself. Figuratively in public, and literally in private. JT will either get stupidly stubborn like his father or realize that it’s in Canada’s best interests to cooperate with the elephant next door. I’m expecting #1.
In any case Trump will likely deal directly with Brad Wall regarding Sask oil. Resources are a provincial responsibility and Wall does not need Trudeau’s permission to do anything. In the end Trudeau and Notley will be left playing with themselves.
Most of the failures in our new appliances are failures in the controls, specifically the electronic controls. Unfortunately that is to be expected, as the capacitors fail as the electrolytic fluid dries up. This happens in a lot of industrial control systems too. Many industrial controls suppliers recommend replacing their power supplies and electronic control cards periodically, often every seven to ten years.
The worst part is that many of electronic parts are obsolete and no longer made after five or ten years. Not a problem for industrial controls, but a big problem on your refrigerator/freezer when it dies. Do you spend $500.00 for a new controller for a $700.00 refrigerator?
Electronic controls are wonderful, versatile, and cheap. They easily can do things that no electromechanical control could ever do. But some parts, especially cheap capacitors will fail in a matter of years. And then the appliance fails too.
I supsect that Freeland( now isn’t that name appropo) will tell Trump that we don’t agree with his re-negotiation of Nafta and he will simply say” thats OK, here is your 1 year notice to cancel” to which Freeland will mumble something like “but-umm-er–well-gee-gosh-well i guess I see your point. We are basically screwed but it MAY be worth it to get rid of “potato head”.
Two points: First, I’ve always said that CBC darling Maud Barlow of the pretentiously named “Council of Canadians”, seems to have the same view of free trade as Donald J. Trump. The two of them should get together. Maud should be safe.
Second, the old American model of making good, long-lasting products was predicated on the expectation that companies could sell products to a growing number of Americans (as well as others). However, Americans stopped reproducing themselves, as did people from Quebec and most other western countries. So, with relatively stagnant population growth, the only real answer was planned obsolescence.
Electronic controls are wonderful, versatile, and cheap. They easily can do things that no electromechanical control could ever do.
Perhaps, however they don’t wash your clothes any cleaner or chill your food any better. Digital isn’t necessarily better.
Now that I have a computer I can make mistakes ten times faster than I ever could before.
I think most “liberals (and pretty much anyone who isn’t a moron) is happy to see TTP go down the toilet, but now one has to wonder why Putin ordered trump to do it.
one has to wonder why Putin ordered trump to do it.
Have you got any proof for that allegation? This is SDA not your FB page, if you make apparently spurious comments like that you’re expected to provide proof.
it was a trade deal that allowed incursions into US sovereignty. No trade deals should be allowed to do that.
what is with all the time outs these days? dropping comments.
Guaranteed. Americans will make sure Canada remains open to trade and people exchange. What we have in common far exceeds our differences. We got rid of our Trudeau. You get rid of your Obama and all will be well.
It depends whether you want the workers to be able to buy refrigerators.
