Federal Bureaucrats Rack Up Pricey Relocation Expenses

Wudrick noted that some costs were for long-distance moves, including those to or from disparate locations in the north. But several relatively short moves were very high in cost, such as the CRA employees who received $538,549 and $113,608 just for moving within Ontario, from Richmond Hill to Belleville, and Mississauga to Ottawa, respectively.

  1. So the top relocation expense was:
    Department: CRA
    Origin: Richmond Hill, ON
    Destination: Belleville, ON
    House Sale: $522,960
    House Purchase: $0
    Other: $15,589
    Total: $538,549
Can someone explain what the expense of House Sale is? I can see $15,589 being the cost of a moving company, but what’s the half-million house sale expense about?

  2. I wonder if there isn’t some kind of guarantee that you won’t lose money on a house because of a move.
General Andrew Leslie spent $72,000 to move within Ottawa. He is a natural Liberal MP. $538,549 is absolutely stupid. Perhaps $100,000 cap is in order or even $50,000. The employee’s boss should be fired for allowing such an expensive relocation.

  3. My recollection of Moving expenses (having done so twice ACROSS Canada), was that costs petaining to ones home that were allowed were; Real Estate Fees, Land Transfer Costs and thats about it….so lets see
    540,000 divided by 7% would mean a home valued at $ 8-9,000,000 ….
Someone tell me who at CRA can afford a house worth that kind of money..??

  4. I’d be willing to wager that a large chunk comes from real estate fees. The employee is “required” to relocate and so the CRA covers the agent commission, lawyer fees, etc.

  5. Someone tell me who at CRA can afford a house worth that kind of money..?
    Someone who’s never been audited?

  6. Nothing to see here . Move along . Canadian households on average get by on 47,500 yearly. Someone making 10 per hour makes 19,200 working full time . At the top end it only cost 11 times the average family income or 28 times someone making 10 per hour to move them . By the time you get to the 20th it is only 1.82 times the average family income or 4.5 times someone making 10 per hour working full time. The CBC is getting 1.6 billion so this is peanuts. And look at the outstanding reductions as you go from number 1 to number 20. We are just a little short for the extra 1 billion a year provinces need for healthcare , but you must realize it is up to Canadians to do their part ! I think I will go vomit now .

  7. Maybe the government was obliged to buy the employee’s house in Richmond because no one else would? Employee then moves to Belleville (back to Belleville?) into a home he/she already owns (rented out since transferrred to Richmond?) so no expense for house purchase there.
The cherry on top of this would be if the employee was induced to take up a post in Richmond with a guarantee that they could go back to their old job in Belleville if they didn’t like the new one. Because as the civil service unions assure us, what we Canadians want is for our government to be an “Employer of Choice” that everyone wants to work for.

  8. This is how leftists pay their supporters. Check the owners of these moving companies, and investigate how much they donated to leftist politicians. And check the number of these companies that were invented just as a means to accept this corrupt diversion of public money to political supporters

  9. Or maybe you find someone to move you and you split it 50 /50 . But then according to the media reports on the 100 thousand plus move of Butts this is the normal course of business. Really ?

  10. Houses in Richmond Hill can easily be over a million, two million is not exceptional. Mississauga likewise. I can see it costing over $100K to move to a similar place in Ottawa or Belleville, also pricey markets.
    >$500K is stretching reality, unless the guy sold a $5,000,000 house. But that could happen. So, you never know.
Next question, how does some guy in the Dept. of Paperclips land a $5 megabuck house? That’s the one that’s interesting. They do it by knowing stuff. They know when to invest in what real-estate, for example. Buddy buys a $5 megabuck mansion, carries it for 6 months or a year, then kapow, he gets transferred to Ottawa.
That’s how you make $500k in moving expenses.

  11. Total B.S. No Federal employee was paid $538K to relocate. The table includes the actual sale of the house, approx. $522,960. The Government does not buy your house when you’re asked to relocated. They pay only real estate and lawyer fees upon closing, along with moving expenses. Given that Richmond Hill is a hot market, I would suggest a 2-3% agent fee, which is inline with the $15k listed under ‘Other” category. This is a gross misrepresentation, and the Canadian Taxpayers Federation know better than this. Their right-leaning partisanship is on full display here
