Who pays for these installations? I am told it is not Tesla.
My question is: How much of the cost of those stations was paid for by the governement/taxpayers? Was it a source of revenue for tesla – IOW they got paid more in grants than they Actually cost to install?
Cause Rachel Nutley is going to tax Albertans into buying electric cars and using the charging station.
The NDP call it the “Friendly herd em to market revolution”.
Another art installation of objects with holes.
Do Teslas ship with battery warmers ? Or do lithium ion batteries operate at any temp ? I assume ALL cabin systems are switched off … it must be quite chilly returning to your 85% recharged Tesla saloon after 5 hours charging in subzero temps … however any subsequent heater operation will severely limit your range. How will the government subsidize THAT ?

They are not interested in subsidizing that, at all. It’s not in The Plan. The plan is to destroy the western economy & depopulate the area for The Won World Elites. She ist chust followink orders!. Rachel’s take on complaints about it are simply: “Walk or take the bus, Ha Ha Ha Ha”. She, of course rides in a heated, chauffeured SUV paid for with a .gov credit card
Suck it up. You don’t work for .gov, so you don’t count. You will be replaced, or starved & frozen to death some winter. Your only solace will be working beet fields with a hoe, ’cause tractors are outlawed, or more likely starved of fuel. Haven’t seen a solar one yet.
Building a charging station in Fort Mac is like building an snowmobile shop in Havana!!
What next??
I’m surprised some enterprising guy hasn’t outfitted his Ski-Doo trailer with a whole whack of batteries . Take them there and charge them and then bring them home and hook up to an inverter and power his fridge, freezer and furnace for free. No carbon tax let alone energy costs.
It’s not Rocket Science.

Near as I can tell,, Dan T is correct: Tesla installed this facility encouraged by the town. Can’t find any reference to a grant being provided.
However, Albertans gave Tesla an $11 million grant for battery development through what was previously known as CCEMC and is now ERA: Emissions Reduction Alberta. ERA is funded by the carbon tax from “major emitters.” Still it is tax income that could be better spent on more important things like health care.
Two points:
Shannon and Rachel’s wet green dreams of 30% of our electricity from renewables by 2030 have no chance of meeting that goal based on their “clean energy call.” If the called for 5000 MW or new renewables actually happened by 2030, based on performance, we’d expect ~ 15% electricity from renewables, mainly wind, in 2030.
Over the next decade or so, fossil fuels will supply an average of 90% of Alberta’s electricity needs. These electric cars are being charged with fossil fuels. Period. End of discussion. Utter nonsense.
As I write, wind is producing 0.25% of our power and coal and gas providing just over 95%
Electric cars probably could play an important role in large cities with smog problems provided the electricity comes from nuclear. Here? Not so much. We’d be better off building a couple of nuclear plants instead of 2,000 new wind turbines.
Coincidentally, I am the guest speaker at the annual banquet of the MD of Willow Creek on January 20, to be held in Ft. MacLeod. Talking about wind and renewables.
I’ll post new photos of the charging station when available. I drive thru town dozens of times all summer. Might stop and talk to an EV owner if I ever see one there.
Happy New Year.

At minus 30C what are the odds any of the 100+ Teslas sold in Alberta get as far as Fort Macleod.
It wouldn’t surprise me if Musk was bribed with grants or tax breaks to install them. He has a reputation for being a welfare freeloader.
Quoting Kenji: “I assume ALL cabin systems are switched off … it must be quite chilly returning to your 85% recharged Tesla saloon after 5 hours charging in subzero temps”
Not to worry, most of the time when it is really cold in Southern Alberta there is no wind so the turbines that will be replacing our Coal will not be turning anyway. But who needs heat and electricity when it is minus 25c anyway? Sometimes I wonder if certain Premiers and PM’s have ever been to Canada.
BTW: Picture was taken by my friend Clive. Good shot Clive.
The Tesla is a car for people with more money than brains. Other than the performance (acceleration, handling, noise), the environmental argument is questionable and the long term ownership costs are ridiculous. The Life-cycle environmental impact in terms of just emissions in a jurisdiction like Alberta with dominant coal fired grid capacity would put Teslas somewhere to the wrong side of the VWs that were caught-up in the fraudulent software controversy. The personal automobile is an endangered species due to the regulatory / Green theocratic state and resultant costs if Tesla is any kind of window into the future.

Exactly true. The problem isn’t electric cars per se, but rather it’s the directives and policies which unrealistically subsidize so-called ‘renewables’ when it’s been proven time and again they can’t meet the energy demands of modern urban society.
Criticizing electric cars because they can’t run in the winter is a foolish spurious argument that ignores the fact that people buy seasonal vehicles like motorcycles with the same climate limitations.
In my last recommendation in “From There to Here” I wrote:

The blame for the situation in Alberta rests squarely on the shoulders of the conservatives who squabbled among themselves instead of uniting the right behind a common goal. They made it even worse by electing arrogant, corrupt, establishment PC politicians who did an excellent job of uniting the left behind the NDP.
People in a democracy get the government they deserve.
The Alberta version of the TrudeauTax is blatant wealth transfer, however on a small scale. The full $200 rebate is to any single income up to $47,500; above that the rebate decreases. Couples will receive the full $300 rebate for income up to $94,900; above that the rebate decreases. The GST has a similar rebate structure. The wealthy will receive no rebate and the few hundred to the ‘poor’ won’t likely cover the increased costs to business which will be passed down to the consumer. It would have been cheaper and easier to raise the GST back to Lieberal levels, however PMButts didn’t like the optics of that.
UNESCO should designate the Tesla recharging statues as a world heritage site, similar to Stonehenge in the U.K. or the statues at Easter Island.
All are indicative of a primitive animist religion. One originating prior to the rise of the age of Reason, the Age of Science, the Enlightenment and Judeo-Christianity.

“Just because an electric vehicle doesn’t fit your lifestyle doesn’t make it ‘a joke’.”
Correct the electric car as presented by Tesla Electric Car Subsidy, is more farce than joke.
There is no consumer product, electric car, that is directly competitive with internal combustion powered car.
Golf Carts, used as battery powered shopping carts are perfect for city use, just as a cordless drill is a great tool for intermittent use.
The package being promoted by Manufacturer and “policy pushers” is an electric car that can seamlessly replace your current IC unit.
Farce or pure stupidity.
You have to adjust your lifestyle to the product, which makes the whole exercise typical social engineering.

The Ft MacLeod station is free for Tesla owners. (“These Tesla Supercharger charging stations are compatible with all Tesla Model S and Model X vehicles.”)
I fiddled with the charger wand and could not figure out how to remove it. Unless there is a secret code or handshake or something…there is no login or payment interface…no “tap” pad. (Next time, I’ll take a dead cat and swing it around my head 13 times. That might work. Kidding.)
I am really interested in speaking to an EV owner so see what their personal reasons are for buying one in Alberta considering the lack of hydro and nuclear and wind’s abject poor performance. (At this moment, wind is producing at 1.3% of nameplate capacity or 0.2% of total output. Pathetic.)
In Alberta, these cars are charged with fossil fuels. Makes no sense whether you are a believer or non believer. (Yes, fossil fuels have HUGE social benefits and always have. We can’t live in a cold northern climate without fossil fuels.)
Unbelievable that nowhere in the NDP’s process of “the climate panel” and in the “climate plan” documents is the word nuclear used.
Clive
PS: An acquaintance wrote this to me today:
[start quote]
Bruce Power Alberta proposed building a 4000 MW nuclear station for $10 billion. http://business.financialpost.com/news/energy/bruce-power-scraps-10b-alberta-nuclear-project
Two more such plants, totaling $30 billion would have provided electrical capacity capable of supplying all of Alberta’s electricity needs – albeit without reserve for breakdowns. Alberta greenhouse gas emissions from electricity production could have been zero by 2030. We would no longer be dependent on natural gas for 2/3 of our electricity.
Isn’t the progressive new democratic policy of our government great? We will be spending $50 billion to guarantee our dependence on natural gas for two thirds of our electricity, will still have substantial greenhouse gas emissions, and our electricity prices will be locked into natural gas prices. No wonder our government is spending $10 million in ads to spread confusion while trying to convince us of the alleged benefits of their great green climate and energy policy.
[end quote]
the electric car as presented by Tesla Electric Car Subsidy, is more farce than joke.
Exactly. There were lots of ‘renewable’ scams to suck up subsidies, and get a quick return on investment. Solyandra, Tesla, numerous wind turbine companies… it’s a long list and growing.
That corruption and malfeasance needs to be exposed to the public eye.
Sidenote:
You will read that Alberta should emulate Norway since Norway is also a cold northern climate and has a lot of (highly subsidized) electric cars.
= Population density in Norway is 2½ times that of Alberta
= Norway population is more concentrated than in Alberta and one presumes travelling distances much less
= Norway gets 95% of its electricity from hydro. THAT is the big difference and it makes ALL the difference in practicality of EVs.
One presumes that the rational for EVs is emission reductions, and yet there is no case for that argument since, in Alberta, they are charged mainly with fossil fuels and will be for decades.
CAS
Call me cynical but ………. do you suppose there’s 8 electric cars south of Calgary, let alone 8 in Fort MacLeod?
Electric cars probably could play an important role in large cities with smog problems provided the electricity comes from nuclear.
Like Bejing ? I wonder how many charging stations were installed in Bejing ? Talk about FOUL air. Interestingly enough, my wife was driving through her childhood neighborhood in LA this past week and marveled at how clean the air was … compared to her memories of it in the 1970’s. The improvement in air quality wasn’t due to silly electric cars (that would all crap-out in LA traffic and would block the freeways) … it is due to IMPROVEMENTS in the internal combustion engine. Electronic engine controls, fuel injection, egr valves, catalytic converters, etc. Despite the population exploding since the 1970’s, LA’s air has been radically improved. No electric toys needed.
Is there a “place” for Electric cars ? Sure … if you make lots of short trips close to home base … it could work out just fine. But for the wide open expanses of the Canadian plains ? Uh … No. Just No.
Yeah,it’s SO indicative of the fantasy world Trudeau,Notley and the rest of the Progs live in, they want to do business with China, but force themselves to ignore their HR record and attitude toward our environmental sacred cows.
I had to laugh when Trudeau spoke against the oil sands development and pipelines with one side of his two faces, then said we MUST develop trade with China with the other side.
China wants our resources, shipped to China, but Trudeau thinks they’ll be happy to spend billions on development, then leave ’em in the ground, and Notley apparently agrees.
Allah almighty, look at the people who represent us in trade with China; Notley, Trudeau, Chrystia Freeland, versus the hard nosed Chinese businessmen who make Trump look like a corner store owner.
We’re going to get hosed, big time.
I remember even Edmonton back in the 1960s. When this farm boy went into the city you could see a haze over it on a still day and it smelled like acrid farts. Now it is 2 or 3 times as big and nothing, no odour at all. I wonder why they keep playing with pollution controls when they have very little to gain and only at great expense. They solved the problem – enough.
OK, so somehow you got your Tesla down to Fort Maclead and got charged up. Then where you gonna go? Tesla Charging locations
Don’t go east, don’t go west, south might work, or turn around and head back to Okotoks.

Talk about your ultimate Eco-car ! Think of all the virtue-signaling you could do in this baby !?
Exempt from paying. Will they get the subsidy back?my bet yes
Exempt from paying. Will they get the subsidy back?my bet yes
“Free for Tesla owners” …maybe… perhaps some signal from the car enables it; no reason to believe they aren’t automatically charged like we are when we buy gas with a credit card. In any case the idea of someone using a Tesla EV charging station to charge a trailer of batteries only shows how ludicrous EV discussions can become. If they wanted to do that, then there are plenty of 110v vehicle plug-ins everywhere in Canada that would be easy to use.
Unbelievable that nowhere in anyone’s “climate plan” documents is the word nuclear used. The nuclear solution is obvious to intelligent people but the policy-makers have congenital Optical Rectitis . http://www.hardcorecloser.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/head-up-ass.jpg
168 mi (271km) to the nearest Tesla Supercharging station (where you will spend 8hr recharging your exotic “supercar”). That is the outer limit of a fully charged Tesla (despite claims of 235mi +/- range). Remember … estimated numbers do not include pesky things like … headwinds, rain, snow, cold temps, yadda yadda yadda

It’s not a golden calf but does herald the arrival of one made out of lithium.
Rachael Notely’s NDP will hold an annual convention there, during which they walk in mass, circling the Tesla statue.

No wonder our government is spending $10 million in ads to spread confusion while trying to convince us of the alleged benefits of their great green climate and energy policy.

the electric car as presented by Tesla Electric Car Subsidy, is more farce than joke.

Call me cynical but ………. do you suppose there’s 8 electric cars south of Calgary, let alone 8 in Fort MacLeod?
Here’s what successful electric cars look like. Cost $1,890 American. A lot like these will go 60km/h and go maybe 100 km. Don’t buy it because it will likely be denied entry to Canada because it is not on the approved auto list. Also freight would cost more than the car.

Hahaha … that reminded me of an old SNL skit …
