In the all-too-brief video, filmed at Boston’s Proof Gallery in September 2011, Mr Fryer performs a thrilling and ambitious piece titled Wall Melody in which he “explores” the theme of commitment by holding down one note on a child’s musical toy, while accompanied by an unspecified power tool, operated elsewhere by persons unknown, for reasons unclear.
Although this is an example of ‘performance art’, Ottawa’s National Gallery has its share of absurdities. A urinal, signed by the ‘artist’, a bungee cord, stretched corner to corner in a small room, a pile of used carpet underlay and the crowning glory, a totally white canvas on a white wall. A brilliant waste of (taxpayer) dollars.

In retrospect, it initially appeared that the ‘artist’ was playing with more than a keyboard, hunched, facing into the corner as he was. But maybe that’s just my uninformed impression.
